- Through eight months of war in Gaza, the issue of the hostages has obsessed the Israeli public above all else but the dramatic operation to rescue four Israelis held captive in Gaza last week - which resulted in a massacre of more than 270 Palestinians - has revealed that a ceasefire deal remains the best option to secure their safe return.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has paid lip service to the public’s demand to bring the captives home but Israelis are coming to the realisation that the issue is a headache for him - it gets in the way of what seems to be his effort to prolong this war in order to prolong his own political career.

Something Pro-Israelis never acknowledge because it contradicts this brutal narrative they paint about Hamas, that unfortunately extends the portrayal broadly to Palestinians which is why Israel is indiscriminate in their bombings.
The hostages were housed in buildings. 70% of the buildings in Gaza have been destroyed by the IDF. Consequently, the Israeli army has killed an extremely large number of hostages (50% or more?).
Perhaps that's the reason the Jews dont want to stop this war..

At 5:30, Rami Khouri, an academic, is quoted as saying, "The hostage issue is very emotive for Israelis, as it would be for any people in the world if their people were taken hostage, they would want them back".
On 6th October 2023, there were over 6,000 Palestinians held in detention by Israel,* a substantial portion of them children, and thousands of them being held in 'administrative detention', i.e. without charge or knowledge of when, if ever, they might be released. These people were hostages.
The stated aims of the Palestinian groups who took Israeli and international hostages (a war crime) on 7th Oct included the release of these Palestinian prisoners/hostages. And that has always been a core plank of their negotiation demands in the months since.
Yet even when there was a temporary ceasefire last November, and hostages were exchanged, Israeli forces were busy increasing the overall number of Palestinians held without charge (i.e. taken hostage), meaning the total number of Palestinians currently held captive by Israel now exceeds 9,000.* Those who were released spoke of suffering torture, sexual assault, beatings, starvation and other forms of mistreatment while they were detained.
*I am speaking of those Palestinians who have been placed in Israeli detention facilities. There is a very real sense in which the entire 2.3 million population of Gaza has been held hostage by Israel in the world's largest open-air prison for the last 16-17 years.
Thank you for this post. I realize this information will fall on deaf ears but, for those of us who have "no skin in the game" (my apologies for using the word game as it's anything but) it is quite simply a matter of wanting to ensure human rights are equal for ALL people, anywhere. The Palestinian people have suffered horrific brutalities inflicted by the israelis and the world has stood by silently, oblivious of their pain. If not for Oct 7-2023, would there by this united, grassroot support globally for Palestine. Enough suffering and horror, we have no option but to speak out and stand up for our Palestinian family.

This, of course, is part of why hostages were taken. One can only guess how much of Gaza would not already have been crushed were it not for global concern for non- Palestinian hostages. I grieve over how little concern there seems to be for the lives of Palestinian children, who I will always believe are innocent.
The difference between Palestinian people and the israelis is quite frankly astounding. These last months have been an eye opener and educational beyond belief. Palestinians are refined, gentle and very dignified. To see children gaunt with hunger, smile and raise their hands in the victory ✌️ sign, is nothing short of heartbreaking. One of the greatest fears of Israel regarding 2 states solution is that Palestine would become a recognized independent sovereign state that is capable of officially establishing its own military to defend their country. They can enter into a defense pact with any nation of their choice including Iran, Russia and China. More so, it can demand for an intervention in the training of its personnel and weapons supply including Nuclear weapons capability from any of the best trained and nuclear capable military in the world excluding America and European countries. In the end, the teeming youths of Palestine who have suffered untoward agony occasioned by the actions of Israel against Palestine would enroll into their military with committed mindsets and unwavering dedications to safeguard their sovereignty. They would fight tooth and nail against any external threat that has the potency to erase their existence. This is what Israel and America is trying to prevent.

Please do a longer report on Jordan. Most westerners don't know a thing about it! For instance, I'm old enough to remember but the fact that at some point Jordanian claims to much of the West Bank was given up was recently relearned by me. Some awareness of the Jordan PLO and Jordan Palestinian and Jordan Hamas relations is likely going to be important over the next decade in particular. Thanks
