  • About a year or so ago I finally upgraded my old single core CF-29 to this CF-30. The only mods I made to it was to add a SSD drive to it, and since then it's been on 24/7 running 1670AM, as well as a 20 channel Shoutcast stream, and a web server/FTP server/BBS/mailer.
    It does all of this, and it does it so well, I even have the ablilty to still surf the web via Firefox on it's 32bit Windows 7 system.
    The point of all this? It's that many really good computers get tosses when they could be set aside and used for some really cool things. Take an old laptop and start your own media empire!

    I got my CF-30 off lease 10 years ago. Its been my main computer since. I love mine upgraded similar to yours 4gb ram, 128gb ssd, but I have a 4g sierra aircard for cellular internet since hi speed internet is not avaliable in my area. I got windows 11 running on mine with a hack for unsuported systems, everything works.

    I have a CF27, but I haven't used it in years. I really appreciate all the efforts that Panasonic put into designing and building the Toughbook series.. The media drawer can hold a floppy drive, CD drive, or a second battery.

    That’s really nice ! I need to find one I can toss in the truck and use when I’m out of town , instead of squinting at the iPhone , bifocals ain’t what they used to be

      They are PERFECT for that! I can't really see my phone (Even when I remember to bring it.) but this fits my web surfing needs just fine and I won't freak out if it dies or gets lost.

    You inspired me to make a radio station, it doesn't go far but for someone who's projects usually never work, it goes super far as far as I'm concerned. 34 bucks after the mic and module, not bad. I have a short (yes I caved in and finally did one) on my channel with the setup. Sorry about the horrible explanations in advanced.

    Nice system, I have a CF-31 with plans to run my ham radio so plus other programs I can take mobile. I like the BBS idea. Old school.

      Can you keep,your bbs and radio app running with the lid of the laptop closed? Won’t that put the system to sleep?

    Win 7 was so easy to navigate. I have a Sony laptop that still has Win7 on it, an old Toshiba laptop with WinXP and a netbook (pre tablet) with WinXP.

      I tried to play with XP again after a few years away. WIth all the updates installed, it was slow even on the P-III. Maybe I should try again with something a little newer.

    Those are the boss of tough computing equipment. Getac tries but not quite as tough or strong. I have a S400G2. Forget trying to do ANY upgrades not factory equipped without pulling a bunch of "sticker seals" such as under the keyboard or the insulating sheets on the system board thus making them useless after all the years. I also have a CF-15 I believe. First gen model. I loved it when it was in use.

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  2 роки тому

      They are nearly impossible to upgrade other than the hard drives. I swapped it out for an SSD and that's about all that you can do!

    • @Cruiseomatic380
      @Cruiseomatic380 2 роки тому

      @@FarpointFarms Haven't tried the Panasonic yet, but did the Getac. If you know what your doing, have the daughter boards and sticker glue, it can be done. Just make sure to have a electric screwdriver and plenty of organization skills. The amount and different types of screws is insane. And they all look alike. How bad is the Panasonic with that?

    CF-29s can have a floppy or a DVD, and are instantly swappable, mine had a DVD +/- RW!
    How did you get 2 gigs into a CF-29? And what version / mark was it? (what was the first letter after the CF-29 in the model number?)

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  Місяць тому

      The Mark 5 (MK5) revision will take 2 gigs. It's undocumented but as you can see, it works! Perfect for Windows XP and pretty good with Windows 7. Windows 10 runs, but is sluggish with all the updates.

  • @GilBatesLovesyou
    @GilBatesLovesyou 2 роки тому +1

    You should keep the CF-29 to experiment with Linux on it. If you find a light Linux distro it might revive itself some. Plus it would be a good learning platform away from your main PC you're actually using for a utility value.

    Someone in my neighborhood is selling 3 of these w/o HD's for $200. I'm thinking of getting them for my 2 stepsons in Indonesia, putting 50g SSD's in for the OS (on hand), 4g memory sticks (~20) replace the batteries for $30 each and Win10.
