One addendum to the video: in addition to super fine grit sandpaper, steel wool can actually work even better to smooth out your frets and get rid of any burrs. Good luck!
Stringjoy would you recommend putting a ball end from the old string set on the new one?
Gotta love that high E
true
Ameda lmao mine just broke today
I just changed them an hour ago, and it snapped again :(

Mines worse. Went to my friends house then i bended the shit out of his guitar strings. One snapped. Luckily he has another guitar. Bended the shit out of his other guitar,it broke again. He has a 3rd guitar but this time he didn't let me borrow it lmao
I'm here out of complete rage, I bought brand new strings 4 days ago, and I sat down to tune up and my high e just snapped
my E string broke because it was thin and i tighten it too much, was scary as it was the 1st chord (im beginner) but i quickly replaced it, just after that i thought about searching the internet for answers. I hope i keep them stable for few months before changing them, thank you :)
Mine just broke like six minutes ago. Stupid high e string.
@@proculusjulius7035 I bought a new string bc mine broke and when I went to tune 2 days later the e string broke bc I didn’t know when to stop🥲
wash ya hands, play, wipe ya string down with a dry rag or something, pinch each string and go up and down with the rag. makes my strings last like 10 times longer.
This!
@@Stringjoy wish I knew about this the first like 15 years I was playing because I would play and then I go to play again and my strings would be all corroded and just feel like rusty wires.
You and I both!
I used to play violin in 5th and 6th grade. Never replaced a string bc of this (unless I had a school rental in the beginning)
I find I typically break high E strings far more easily than any other, regardless of what guitar is involved, because it takes so much more work to full-bend the E than it does the B or G. The wound strings hardly ever break before they go dead, and the B and G will usually break only from corrosion. I keep extra .009" strings on hand, but may try a .008" on that string alone, to see if I can make it behave more like the B when it comes to bends. I have this weird notion I may actually break _fewer_ .008s than .009s if I'm not having to bend so far to get the same effect.
well what if you play .013 and pick really hard I can't use a medium bc it breaks and my strings do too

Just broke my high E while tuning it. Thanks for the advice
How do y'all face your fear on tuning your guitar?? I have a lot of questions to askk
It shouldn't be. The first time I broke my string was because I was using the wrong tuning peg the whole time and the app kept showing it to not get high enough
I've faced a similar situation. I've gotten over it by clenching my butt muscles every time I'm tuning my strings, especially the high e. Seems to work 😂
i got used to it
@@shineyuchandra9423 same situation here, never use an app. Use an actual tuner. The first time i broke a string was an app
@@kyriosi2966 same situation for me
The only way that I have broken any guitar string (mostley the high note strings) is by bending. However, most times that happenes, I give one of the weakest bends of all time. For example, I was practicing a guitar solo, and the solo had a note with the high E string that had a bend in it, and before I could even get a half bend, the string broke. So either I just use my guitar way to often, or I need better strings.
obiwancc same bro, once played all day long with full bends and then broke with a quarter bend
If that happens, avoid bending and bend the string behind the nut (by pressing on it) don't press on it too hard tho
If it needed a big bend you can just make a fast slide to the high note instead
Qwertyuiop6969 Qwertyuiop no 2 whole step bends I guess
@@qwertypoiu4291 but i want bending it:(
The worst thing is breaking a string on a floating bridge, putting the other strings out of tune
Don’t float your bridge. I don’t know why people do that.
I got my guitar today. Broke the B string while tuning :(
I can’t tune to save my life 🤦🏻♂️ every time I tune they break! Ugh
If it helps any, that's probably not your fault unless you're just tuning up crazy fast or something. Probably a guitar issue that could be fixed by a tech 👍
Stringjoy Thanks, I’ll try to get it looked at.
Get an APP for tuning your guitar, also when your tuning don’t let the strings keep playing a note, you have to adjust peg > listen > mute and repeat
The thumbnail looked like you was flossing with strings
Lol 😂
I broke once B and G and two times D. Not so old strings and pretty clean. Quite similar Tune-O-matic bridge always.
Watching this video can go a long way
I restringed my guitar the other day and then tried to learn the master of puppets solo... then my thin E broke... and I’m not sure if it was my fault lol
Your suggestions can make me to prevent breaking of string
has anyone ever had trouble with a high e string breakage while tuning down?
help would be much appreciated....
I got my strings fixed like an hour ago and it broke again😭😭😭
Condolences
I've had the same strings for 3 years (I play ~5 hours a week)... getting really nervous that it'll break any day now.
My string broken 2 times when I played paranoid solo in the same part!!!
2 times on 2 days
thanks for the video man!, I am used to do all the recommendations mentioned here, i wash my hands, clean the strings after, use the conditioning liquid after, and my guitar keeps breaking the D string even before it shows signs of wearness or corrotion. (always in the bridge) my guitar has a tremolo bridge and i even changed the little piece of metal over which the String rests and keeps breaking the 4th string after more or less 3 weeks of regular use. I will try to decrease the height of the string in the bridge, only the 4th, so maybe it suffers less stress when using the tremolo bar, will keep you guys informed cheers!
I re-strung my old electric for the first time in years. Despite leaving plenty of slack, every time I threaded a string through the machine head and wrapped it around with the tuning peg once, the strings all sounded very tight -- like they might snap at any moment. I actually snapped by high E after barely getting it above the correct pitch. So now I've got a 5-string guitar and they all look pretty unstable and I'm getting a little buzz when I play on the 12 fret of the B and G strings... can someone tell me what may be wrong anatomy-wise with my guitar? Thanks.
Buzz doesn't matter for me if it's not audible through the amp. If it is buzzing through the amp however (that's some mega buzz), your action is probably too low. For the string breakage see the video above ofc. Buzz will also kill your sustain and a little clarity of notes but that depends on what you're after. If you play fast things (like punk/metal) a little buzz for lower action is a good trade-off.
Trying to learn from my guitar, then stretch at E it goes and with it my soul. That hurted so much for it to go when I just got it the other day. I guess the soul pain is part of learning but fuuuck.
I didn't think I'd hear the phrase "what's interesting about nuts..." today
😂
One time... The ball end of the g string on my guitar shoot out like a bb gun straight to my friends face 😂 😂 it was an acoustic... Didn't know how the hell it happened 😂
strings have always broken for me at the machine head, getting pinched at the nut due to a lack of lubrication. love the use of a wound string as an abrasive!
Great video but I break the G String on my acoustics more than any other strings or my electrics. Note acoustic(s). Both my Samick and my Fender. Usually breaks about 1/8” above the peg never anyplace else on the guitar.
Because, the G is the thinnest string actually and then it has a wrapped wire.
you guys just saved my frickin life
I came here because I have a roller bridge, and of course... Right at the start of the video - "If you have a roller bridge you probably don't have this problem." Well I do! lol. I broke the A string at the bridge twice now. Strings are about two weeks old, same as last time also. I don't see anything even close to sharp there. I do get pretty sweaty and sometimes forget to wash my hands first. I guess for now i'll try the string conditioner and use my microfiber cloth religiously. I really don't see what the problem could possible be other than that at this point. Thanks for the video.
Hey there! We could certainly get you a slightly heavier gauge at the position, sometimes all you need to do is find a gauge that suits your playing a bit better.
I think you covered it all.
Well thanks, we do our best!
ay yo, my high e string deadass popped 5 minutes after putting it on.
How to adjust the guitar strings so it can be tuned in standard and still be able to be loose and bend more ?
So helpful!
Gotta love the low e
Dude what's your haircut name?, I think it looks pretty cool i'd like to use that in me too and nice video very helpful
High e broke the first time today scared me 😐
I've broken my G, B and High E strings so much
4 sets of string in one month i send my guitar for a fret job because high-e always breaks along 15th fret up to 17th or 18th i always full bend and abusing whammy bars screaming pig squeals i do not know what to do btw i'm using 10s ernie ball regular slinky then tried D'addario strings and lasted 2 days :(
Hi can you make a set of strings that would have very strong top string and especially e string
My high e string just broke 😭

Does using a capo regularly causes strings to break ?
anyone able to help me out?
i just got my first guitar a few days ago and every time i try to tune it one of my strings snap and its costing me a fortune having to keep ordering new ones. i am currently learning on an out of tune guitar as i know i will snap another string if i try to tune it
Take your guitar to a tech!
Have a particular guitar thst I break strings on regularly. Recently I've been getting a maximum of 2 gigs out it before a breakage.
Had it professionally set up, swapped the bridge out for a roller Bridge, tried heavier gauge strings, still breaks and every time it's where the string meets the saddles. Any ideas?! Granted I play pretty hard but still, they break more that on any other guitar I've owned.
The setup job wasn't done all that well then.
What about if you tune it but the bridge pin is popping up little by little
Does changing tuning often (I mean all the time) do anything to the strings, because I often break my high E string when tuning. I go from standard to drop A# and everything inbetween. I want to play everything but I only have 1 guitar.😂
Yeah it will definitely limit string life a bit, but quality strings can handle switching tunings pretty well in general, so long as you've got the right gauge for the range of tunings you're using.
@@Stringjoy do you think 11s are good enough, or should I go heavier?
It's totally up to you, but 11s are definitely a good place to start!
@@Stringjoy I've been playing guitar with my friend lately and hee uses like 12 or 13 gauge. After playing his guitar, I feel like I really like the feel of very thick strings now. Would it make me any less of a guitar player to want to play with really thick strings?
No of course not, go with some 12s or 13s then!
What about when using the tremolo bar too much?
“And that can go a long way
I have my guitar more than 50% tunes except for E and B I have crazy nerves about tuning them any higher. What should I do? Got the B string to G and E to E but it does not sound like the right pitch
So I'm doing my best bb king/SRV impersonation and I'm getting to a good spot in the solo and the high e string broke and scared the crap out of me.

I think I am not bad. I can make do with new string for 2-3 months. Is that OK?
I keep mine on for 6-8 months.
@@Stringjoy are you serious? xd, then I should be more careful about this :P
Everyone's different! I care for my strings and also don't have that acidic of sweat.
hi im a beginner and i was told that after each time i was done playing to untune the strings so nothing happens to the neck. could this be a reason why my high e keeps breaking?
You absolutely do not need to do that
My g string was breaking over and over thanku
Hey guys I need help asap:
I bought my first electric guitar and it arrived today, while I was playing I noticed a buzz on the high E and B string, wich still persist but doesn't change the tone so much so I didn't bothered and kept playing. I tried to do some bending with the High E, went not much further than half the neck and, whoops, my string breaks. So my question is, does this mean that the stock strings were bad, and need to be changed or I bended too much?
My guitar is a Fender Squier CV 70s, and I was trying to do the solo lead on Where is my mind by The Pixies. Thx!
You were playing on stock strings... that’s usually a no no. You should always get new strings whenever you get a new guitar. Also fix that fret buzz that could be a reason also the string broke.
I broke my high E strong 2 times today because I am noob at Guitar
my string keeps breaking in my bridge, is it because i play to hard and i bend to much?
Haii, beginner here and I'm really afraid to tune my guitar because I'm afraid that I'm doing it to tight and it might break..
I'm about to buy my first guitar too, and I've watched so many videos of how to tune and read that they've hit peoples faces, eyes and cut wrists and now i'm paranoid and overthinking whether I should learn guitar or not. It's been 3 months for you, how did you do it?
I just cut my string while bending. But I find it odd coz they were new ones and also I didn't bend very high. Do I have some problem with the way I set up my guitar or something?
Depending on where it broke it could be an issue on your guitar, or it could just be a bum string. If it's happening at the same place (bridge, nut, tuning peg, or even the same fret) definitely have a look there.
Do tuning pegs impact string breakage? Like I mean I'm the kind of guy that likes to play in different tunings.. But I experience strings breaking often when I change to play in different tunings.. Should I upgrade to better tuning pegs?
Changing your tuning frequently puts a lot of stress on the strings, different pegs won't do anything
I just hate the last 2 strings when you tune them last time I did it it was fine but it snapped a few min later so I'm scared playing the guitar 😅
my squier's bridge keeps unwinding the string at the ball end
edit: and its always Ernie's for some reason
Fml just got my strings fixed and it already broke
I have a question for you. One of my guitars got a new set of strings and doesn't sound right. It's experiencing "wow" like on a turntable. If you are not aware, turntables used to experience wow and flutter, among other things. This string wow is new to me. Any ideas? I'll add that the sound has a drop off in frequency when the string is plucked.
That's not good! Any number of things could be happening, but it's definitely worth popping a new string on there and seeing if that fixes it.
@@Stringjoy These are new strings. And it happens on all of them. It did not happen with the old strings. There is something we don't know about going on here. Frequency, as far as I know, is a mass/length/tension thing. I will add that the sound is not just a drop-off. I think I hear it rising before it drops. Keep your eye/ears open for an idea on that one. I have never experienced that before......except with rubber bands. That may be a clue. That makes me think the strings are too light. Not sure.
Thanks for the response.
@@alext9067 I have read that putting pickup magnets too close to a string can cause it to warble and not tune up properly.
I just got new elixir guitar strings and I was able to put on all the strings besides the high E string! Every time I tune it, it stops at C and then it just breaks loose and I have to restart again. It can never reach high E. Please help!

What?? How?😂😂😂😂
lol while tuning down my guitar for song called snuff
i broke my freaking g string thrice for the same song 😑😑
I broke my g-string and i have an extra pair and i cant tell which is the g string is it just has numbering
Yeah, so the gauge of the G will vary depending on the set you have, typically it's anywhere between .015 and .020, or for acoustic it'll be somewhere between .020 and .026 (there might be a "w" thrown in after the number, depending on the brand)
@@Stringjoy yeah I thought i was using the wrong string because yours sad 22 and mine said 20 mabey ernie ball needs to letter their strings instead of using numbers.
Yeah there are all different gauges depending on the gauge of the set, some will use a .020, some a .022, .024, .026, etc.
