Well done and a great result. We purchased a 2018 Iveco based motorhome with a noisy diff at the beginning of this year, 2024. It was well out of warranty but it had only traveled 40,000 km. After doing some research I found out it was a common problem around the world and it was a recall issue in some countries. I wrote a polite email to Iveco Australia detailing the issue and the fact that it was a known problem around the world and asked them if Iveco would “help out” with the repairs. I was hoping they might cover the cost of the parts OR labour but to our surprise they covered the whole cost of the repairs. In the end they tried three times to get the diff right and eventually had to replace every part in the diff including a new crown wheel and pinion. The total cost to Iveco was $9000 so we are very grateful to them and of course the diff is now quiet. Like you, I was very polite and just stated the facts. No complaining and no criticising. I also believe this approach helped to get Iveco to cover the cost. Merry Christmas and we’re looking forward to your videos again in 2025. Cheers, Stuart and Leanne from a very warm Australia.

You made the 1st time ever warranty claim in Germany in a diplomatic manner. That is why the dealer was left with no choice to grant it under warranty. Good job! Best wishes for the new year 2025!

    • @Heritage4x4
      @Heritage4x4 26 днів тому +6

Sadly to say it’s not about being diplomatic, it’s is a very known fault even confirmed via JLR - Topixs (technical reference repairs library and other information to main dealers and independent repairs) and recalls within the UK, it was only a matter of time before it was picked up in Germany and now can be found on the German Topix found on the service campaign, in other words a in house recall, a free repair. Call it out for what is…….., JLR being thinking they are Teflon well not in this case.

Morning Vera & Christian thanks so much for the videos in 2024 it’s the highlight of a Sunday morning for me in the UK loved the all the humour and LR expertise with a few OMG’s thrown is great viewing.
I’m an LR owner with two RRS a 2014 & 2018 and yes they have their quirks and faults but love them, my niece has a Velar with the ingenium 180 engine which has just blown a turbo and wrecked the engine and LR have declined to repair she is now faced with £15K repair bill for a known issue with the engines.

Christian and Vera, congrats on getting the Mall Crawler knuckles taken care of by the Land Rover!
In my humble opinion this issue could have been prevented if the parts were made of drop forged SAE 6000 or SAE 4130 steel, yes it adds a b 0:04 bit more weight, but the parts would last the life of the vehicle. Even drop forging aluminum ones that “don’t get machined on the outside of the knuckle” (the process that negatively impacts the structural integrity of the part by cutting the aluminum grains) would have been a better design. I was impatiently waiting to see the replacement knuckles just to see if they machined the outside of the knuckle.

SuperAlloy International is a well-regarded company (they supply to a number of automakers), so as the cracked knuckles are a supplier issue, I would imagine JLR would in turn have some recourse with them. As for the tone to take when dealing with an issue such as this, one of my great-grandmothers always said "you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar", which I suppose was somewhat ironic as she was 8th-generation Pennsylvania German, and Germans are usually 99% vinegar ;-)

I am impressed with your description of customer handling. There is a lot of psychology involved involving ego and ape side of brain. If you went on an expensive training course you would be taught this and be able to quote it. Unfortunately many people can quote all of this but their brains are not able to employ it in the instant of need. Stay calm, stay neutral, stick to the facts and be realistic. Less Stress, better outcomes. Take the emotion out it just gets in the way of rational thinking.

It's interesting how the new knuckle casting line is different from the old.
I had experience back in the day mainly with drop forged items where the old fellas in the company were 'Let Go' early and the newer less experienced guys made tools that produced the 'wrong' grain flow in the material which led to failure when machined ie not cleaning up.

They didn't build it or design it. Only trying to sort things out, give them a chance. See these idiots on social media shouting and screaming down the phone at someone! Do you think anyone will go out of their way to help you after shouting for ten + minutes? Treat people how you would like to be treated.

it should be remembered that the €5000 cost is the retail cost of the repair & not the actual cost to JLR, although it will still be a substantial amount. Ive just had my 4 year old nissan NV250 works van with 56000miles in to the local franchise dealer here in scotland for excessive wear on the steering rack & they have agreed to replace it under warranty, no fuss or drama, their cost for workshop time was £180 an hour i think it was. Whilst main dealers dont often get it right its good to here that when they do they get the credit they deserve. All the best for 2025

So nice to hear some positive comments about JLR the company. I only wish their dealers were as helpful and efficient. I've had Jaguars or Land Rovers for decades now and loved every single one of them. But it really hurts to admit, I'm about to order a brand new Audi Q8. Not because of my Range Rover, not because of JLR but because of the attitude and declining standards of a dealer I have used for many years. They would benefit from listening to your comments on how to treat people. Anyway, Range Rover or not, I will still be following this channel. 👍

Thank you for another wonderful video showing me why I will never own a RR. I have been driving a 1972 Ford F250 for Manny many years and rarely do I have a problem. And if I do have a problem chances are I can fix it and it will be very inexpensive. But I do love the videos.
One other point, now that our country will be taken over by a maniac on Jan 16, chances are government organizations such as the NHTSA will be in serious decline because this administration and a certain demographic of our population do not believe in these types of protections and they feel that such spending is a waste of money.

Surprise, surprise JLR Holland did repair my 2015 L405 also under warranty! It took me some time to convince them and had to do the “cracktest” by myself but after a while they came around.
Vera and Sebastian again, many thanks for all the information and you probably protected me for a nasty incident.....

Desktop mechanic here, I think the parts you replaced at the end are called end links.
Tie rods go to the steering rack. Happy New Year!

Mechanic here (retired) stabilizer rods/arms which Christian does call them afterwards. :)

But desktop mechanics, retired mechanics and any sort of mechanics will know what he's talking about given he's just pointed at it, regardless of what name is used... For what it's worth I call them drop links!

At my families car repair workshop we would call them 'anti-roll bar drop links' 🙂🙃 The internet uses multiple different names for these. 👍 I have changed quite a few of them over the years. Diagnosis is that there would be a rattle at low speed on a slightly rough road when driving in a straight line. Often when you jack the car up they feel fine, but to best detect the play or wear in the link knuckles there should be no twisting load on the anti-roll/sway bar. 👍

You did a great thing raising awareness of this problem! If the new parts are very similar in design to the old ones I wonder what’s to stop the problem recurring?
Best wishes for 2025 and thank you for all the entertainment and education in your fantastic videos.

Hi Christian/Vera, with a quick calculation on the US figures for repairing these knuckles is £80 million. But more importantly is how the US cares for its citizens. Can you imagine how much a law suit would cost a company if a US citizen was injured due to an accident involving these knuckles.
£80 would be small cheese. You have done a super job in highlighting this problem with the Queen👍🏻
PS I was going to make a comment of women hating each other, but I think I’ll pass on this one 😐
    Happy New Year Both

The cost i Germany is with a sale-tax and that is 17-18% in Germany I think. Then you can lower the cost with about 15% ..... and the RR dealer do not have to pay full price for the parts and and...... not so much as it seems to be but a lot anyhow.

Thank you for your reply, I worked for GM and design faults are well reported what ever the auto company (Not LR I know) What ever the % is if theses design faults cause Death, then what is the cost of a life?

If JLR is accepting the responsibility, they are getting their ducks in a row. In EU, you have to have a large stock of parts ready on the shelf before you announce the recall to be able to process recall in a timely manner. And you know that to cough up a large number of parts in manufacturing terms takes time + all the german paperwork to get the dealerships ready.
In USA they just published the paper and will let the wild west of the consumer matket to fight out between each other, which is more important for the available shortage of parts.

A recall should be mandatory as any sudden failure in suspension or steering components can result in serious injuries or deaths to road users. At marginal costs and discounted labour rates the real cost to LR should be much less than the retail prices you show, maybe €1500 per car.
