    Two things stood out to me.
    #1- my 12 and 8 old salty planers were just a bit too big and required too much drag. Im moving to a 8 and 6.
    #2- That line creep technique is a great idea, especially with putting another mark on the line.
    Thanks Capt Mike.

    Great seminiar Mike and grateful for your passion. A little FYI we were fishing a #8 approx. 125ft behind the boat and started heading in to wait and see until it hits the bottom. It was at approx. 35ft the #8 planer would bottom out. Great job again.

    I've been fishing SE Florida waters since 1983, all three of my kids have caught a sailfish before they were 10. We landed the third place dolphin in the old Arthur Smith KDW tournament. Every single fish trolled up was using single strand wire leader. In these days when the fishing is maybe 20% of what it used to be it doesn't make sense to me to chance getting my line bitten off. To each his own I guess.

    Also i use 400LB swivels for my jumper. They still go through the guides, but allow me to use 150LB mono for my jumper instead of sensitive braid....

    I used a planner in the 70's out of Sarasota, Fl and to the best of my knowledge it did not have a weight. It came with a rope that was tided to the stern with a rubber bungee. Do they make this set up now or is every planner designed for a rod?

  • @crustybear

    Beautiful, thank you, I was waiting for a wind-on planer video! Question: Isn't it problematic to reel the metal swivels through the rod guides? Or do you use those super fancy Torzite rod guides to address the problem? What's the issue with roller guides here? Don't the Aussie swivels fit through these?

      I saw nobody answered you so I thought I would. I used to be a full time charter boat mate out of Hatteras NC and Oregon Inlet NC and have a fair amount of experience with planer fishing offshore and rigging wind on planers. To answer your question about the swivels and rod guides, we used to use the spro swivels like what is being shown here and never had any trouble with them going through the guides, including roller guides, and when I say roller guides I'm not talking about the larger wind on roller guides like Aftco makes, I'm talking about standard roller guides. The only thing I disagreed with in this video is chopping off the snap swivels to fit through the swivel eyes. First of all, we never used the swivel eyes to hook the planer through, we would build a planer bridle with loops and wind on swivels at both ends and would hook the snap swivels to the loop rather than the swivel itself. The bridle with the swivels had no trouble fitting through guides of all types. In fact, we used to use those spro or bullet style swivels to make wind on leaders for regular offshore leaders because they could be easily reeled through the guides. The only thing I would recommend when using those types of swivels to create wind on leaders, whether for planer fishing or not, is to make your leader long enough so that in the case you're reeling in a big fish like a large tuna or wahoo, the swivel doesn't "see-saw" in and out of the guides when the fish is near the boat. You know as well as I do that often large fish who still have some fight left in them will take runs once near the boat, often several times. If your wind on leader is only 10 or 15 feet long then that means that the swivel will go in and out through the guides several times. Connections at terminal tackle will always be the weakest or most vulnerable point in the system and the friction caused by going in and out of the guides may chafe the connections and cause a break off, especially if you've used knots to connect the swivels to the line. Hope that answers your question.

      @@billdavis6900 Thank you for taking the time to write such an extremely well-written explanation. I really appreciate that and you taught me something, this indeed answered my question. I will try looking for some resource or draw a little to try understanding your bridals a bit better and build some of those as well.

    • @billdavis6900

      @@crustybear No problem, happy to. The planer bridle is super easy. Basically it’s a section of mono about 24 inches long with a crimped loop in either end with a bullet swivel in each loop. It just needs to be long enough to allow the planer to set and trip.

    instead of the Aussie swivel for jump... You can use 2 braid loops made with FG knots that tighten onto your line in opposite directions. they can also be slid along the line to the right posn...
    And this is coming from an Aussie.

    • @jimdrechsel3611
      @jimdrechsel3611 2 роки тому +1

      that rig can also be used as a breakaway... you tie say 10-15 lb btw the loops with say a riverstone rock weight. or a coke can full of cement.. fish bites, tighten up, 10lb breaks and sinker gone... can be used slow troll. or deep drop swords... my breakaway rig. Sometimes use i foot of 1 inch steel rio as the weight for streamline... possibilities are endless
