I find it amusing that at the start they wanted to move because they felt their bungalow was too big for them once the kids moved out but each of the homes they looked at are even bigger.

People usually say what they think the need to do, but when you see these beautiful homes the get you, and every thought you had goes out the window. I say if I were younger, I would move to England just to find one of these beautiful homes.

I have been a House Hunters International fan for years, but I like this series of “Escape to the Country” much better. The house buyers are normal people, who haven’t been dramatized, and you get to see more of the houses with a sprinkling of history and sight-seeing. Lovely series. Thank you for sharing!

It's because American parents and culture bombard children with the message that leaving your parents is proof of adulthood and that attachment to parents is a sign of a loser. It's not the same in more traditional cultures, for example in continental Europe, where Sunday dinner with parents and extended family is a deeply entrenched part of the culture, as well as grandparents helping to care for grandchildren on a daily basis. The idea of not taking care of your parents personally is bizarre in many cultures.

My favourite was the first house. It was new, looked cozy, and was set in beautiful surroundings. I don't like old buildings too much. They feel cold and too big, and just old fashioned. They are hard to heat up (and pricey too), they need a lot of maintenance (and not just the ordinary type, but a special one in case of historic buildings).

I wish they'd show more houses to them instead of all that stuff inbetween to give them more choice. i'm sure people were just lining up to have their houses shown on a national tv show to help them get sold so there should have been plenty to choose from.

The windows in house #3 were very small and I would think in the cold, wet, dark winter months that would be a BIG factor. The living room was a nightmare with nothing but featureless walls and a tiny window. Kitchen was so bad he just rushed them right through it. I kept wondering what the husband was thinking. He kept saying it (the house) had wow factor. I simply did not see it. All I saw was plenty of parking. Number 2 had the best views, but virtually no place for their two cars plus company. I'm not sure how they will manage that. The best overall with all the "boxes ticked" was #1. Because it was newer, it probably would have fewer problems looming beneath the surface. To each his own.

As a kayaker, I would like to say the best place to begin is to put your kayak in your swimming pool. Practice getting in and out without flooding and tipping. Then head for lake, river, ocean.

Generally you are a "canoeist"....You go "canoeing" ( in a Kayak or a Canadian type. ) You don't go kayak-ing or Canadian-ing. I'm not sure how you describe a person paddling a "Canadian" if you describe a person paddling a kayak as a"kayaker" ?? Kayak has double blades ...Canadian has single blades. But of course this post is about houses.

As a sea and lake kayaker of 10 years... would like to say if you wear a splash deck your never going to flood your kayak.
If your careful and have a stable kayak you are pretty safe from tipping....if your in a small kayak you may have more chance of tipping....I've never once tipped over and I started out alone kayaking...first paddle in the sea... got in it and paddled away🙂

The schoolhouse was ridiculously overpriced, no real garden, no garage, 1 nice bedroom, the others poky, neighbours right on top of you. Who would spend so much to live like that? Renting a garage in the village isn't practical for them as they get older and no visitor parking either. The coachhouse had character but also no garden, just a cobbled courtyard. It is not what you envisage when you imagine moving to the countryside and it has a staircase that wouldn't be particularly safe for them as they get older or for young grandchildren.

As home in the UK are expensive, the older couples are the ones that have money to spend on a new house. As for the stairs part, it is more of an American thing to have ranch style homes because we tend to have larger pieces of land, plus most homes in the UK are much older than most homes here.
