- Get ready on your buzzers to tell me when you spot the obvious dumbass mistake as I complete my left field load up of Trek's latest Top Fuel carbon frameset. Let me know what you think of some of my twisted spec decisions too, especially if you've tried them yourself on your bike or they're on your future upgrade shortlist!

I was yelling at the screen the second you started tightening the "carefully calibrated" crank 😂😂😂
@@tomriley_bike what a muppet eh!
Every couple seconds I just think, “is he gonna fix the cranks yet?!!”
🤣Can't believe I didn't notice it, what a donkey
I can see the Peyote effects are holding strong :D Very nice!
Ha, yep I shot this one just after that Peyote vid 😵💫
i'll swear my blunts are stronger than that peyote; just done a build and ended up having to install barb and olive on the rear brake three times before i made it through all the required apertures.
For your next build on this frame, would be cool to try longer travel front and rear suspension and maybe even a piggyback shock. That'd be a more trail orientated version after this XC build.
Your most entertaining production yet Sir.Those bars are a work of art.
Cheers mate, was worried those bars would feel wonky but the shape is actually great
Thank you for the content!
Looking forward to the 120mm fork build and test. I am starting to seriously get tempted by a light weight XC build with this frame as my “next dream bike”.
I've done a couple of rides on it now and even with the Mattoc in it's bloody quick. Lighter wheels and lighter fork and shock will make it even more rapid so I'm looking forward to taking it that way too
Instant thumbs up for the intro song
@@Engineers_Shred_Too 🤣
Love it! ive got a 2017 Fuel EX8, same colour scheme. Drooling over here!
@@shaunlunney7551 that ‘17 TF was a sweet bike though, proper lively
Left, right cranks look out of alignment on the video, also didn't see you put any spacer in BB (not familiar with Hope stuff) - may be not needed ???
Some red hubs, silver spoke nipples, silver seat clamp, and silver levers would look so good.
@@flybyguy1450 you’ve now got me thinking hard about some 90s homage custom wheels 🤔
My bike builder buddies would always solder the ends of the cable together to prevent it fraying during installation. I have also had some limited success dipping the end in cyanoacrylate.
Yep, both a great idea. Couldnt find my superglue tho and Soldered cables don’t go through rollers well though and it was the threading that was the fight.
Nice build love hope products myself great colour
Looks great!
Really interested in those Reserve wheels!
They are what i fancy on my FlareMax.
No problems with the tyres!
My favourite race combo back in the day was Maxxis Ikon on the back and Rocket Ron in the front!
Always worked well for me that pairing!
Good to hear from another tyre heretic 🤣 I had the Reserves in my FlareMax a few times and they worked really well. Not too stiff so they spoiled the frame but not so flexy it all got a bit too twangy
I actually wish you were mixing and matching brakes. Let's try to get you a Shigura sponsorship.
I’m building up a very simmilar. Top fuel for bikepacking. Full sus for comfort and climbing, 2,35-2.4 tyres fir grip an comfort.
I do have most of the parts on hand , fox 34, magura mt7, with a trusted gx eagle drivtrain.
I do not have the wheels yet, but im leaning on a dt wheelset on 30mm internal xm 481 w 350s.
My main caveat is tyre choice.
My main “race” is. 1400 km bikepacking race. And it adds up quite of a lot of tarmac. Like 40% (connecting road, forest roads). So need i tyre which rolls fast on “gravel” , but also does well on a loaded bike in singletracks, technical descents, while the tarmac is still 40% :-s
The very recent vids made me think a lot about tyres.
The race is june, so most probably dry, but 2 years ago we had 3 days od peanut butter mud. But in theory should be quite dry.
Any ideas. ? peyote & rocket? Does not seem too off :)
I'd say Peyote ATMO as its really good on tarmac and I'm impressed with how tough it's been so far. I'm just about to fit Conti Cross King / Race King though which might be the sweet spot between Schwalbe and Vittoria. Watch this space
Thanks. Is Peyote solid on the front as well? Seems to be a bit of a rear kind of tyre , but maybe i’m just no used to this kind.
These long events are weird as you need the fast rolling on the tarmac , but but riding 10+ hrs a day, loaded, tired , proper grip and confidence is also very important.
Once winter is done i should give a try to peyote.
@@maaszviktor it’d have to be really dry and smooth to run Peyote up front as cornering and braking grip is poor. I’d match it with a Mezcal front
I once customised a Lapierre Zesty with all red parts. To cut a long story short, it was hideous 😂
I refuse to hear this. Then again I'm presuming it was one of the red white and black Zesty, not the green and white. That would look wonky
@@GuyKesTV It was the 2012 714 that was just black with small amounts of red. I added a Rockshox Pike fork with red decals, Hope hubs, seat clamp and F20 pedals (all red) a SRAM XO1 1x11 groupset (the one with red permanent decals) and a Chromag bar with red decals… Total red overkill. I still have the bike in bits in my attic though, it was a pretty good bike!
I've had the gear cable fray and get stuck anywhere except at the rear mech wheel.
About shifting... I was also not quite happy with quality of shifting. The solution : B screw > closing top pulley closer to casssete (sram white plastic indicatior in not always right, especialy on 10-50 or 10-45 cassetes with smaller chainrings 28-32t). How to do it : Shift to the smallest cog in the rear and screw in b screw till the point that chain is slack from this point start screwing in till chain is streched, stiff and stop there. On the other end at the largest coges chain needs 3mm clearence to jump up). I really doubt it is chain issue, it doesnt look too short and KMC chains are sh** but not that much :)
Thanks for the reminder. That sounds like a simpler and cheaper solution than a fresh chain, so I'll give that a go first.
I am having similar shifting issues but struggling to follow the above instructions. I’d like to try, so could you explain the process for simpleton please 🙏
Do you think it would be possible to up-stroke and mullet the Gen 3 model?
@@joellekkas7667 I’ll ask the engineers at Trek next time I’m talking to them
@@GuyKesTV Cheers, big fan of my gen 3, just wanting to see if I can explore similar options to you in your gen4 project. I've already got hope e4's and pike on it in full 29. I'm also interested in seeing how you change the stroke on the RS Deluxe, seems like it is not as simple as on the Fox shocks.
Some people just seem to require square taper BBs.
Kind of astounding how long it took you to notice.
Yup. It even took me a few metres of riding to realise why the bike felt so weird. Thought the shock was screwed as it had a really weird bob pattern with the cranks crooked 😵💫 Not my finest hour!
@@GuyKesTV 🤣
Flat Top chain they designed with larger rollers and probably a different teeth on the casette to go with them, therefore other chains might not work well on that
I figured it was worth a try but yeah, after a couple of grinding, skipping shift rides I'm definitely be switching back to SRAM
@@GuyKesTV: X01 chains are hard to beat
Would you build a alloy Top Fuel up?
@@jamesprewett6965 absolutely, for reference the same build as this would come to 12.6kg
looks nice, it's just sram cable rear mech's that are a nightmare, all other cable rear mechs are fine.
i just went on giro's new website ( which needs serious work to work properly, its extremely frustrating! ) but i noticed no manifest helmets on there, does that mean that there is a new manifest coming? nudge nudge wink wink
I've just asked about A/W 24 kit from Giro so I'll shout soon as I know anything. And yes, definitely an easier job cabling Shimano
@@GuyKesTV thanks Guy 👍
Love the build, except this super light but non-adjustable one piece bar-stem thing. Yuck :D
@@Felix-mr1vs fair enough, feels ok so far but will see how I get on once I start fitting lights / GPS etc. Also none of the one piece cockpits I’ve tried are significantly lighter than top spec separates which still surprises me.
Cranks are not on straight 😂
You win, first to spot what an idiot I'd been. Rode it down the back lane and wondered WTF was going on!
@@GuyKesTV easily done on hope cranks as the splines are the same all the way around the axle, unlike most other manufacturers cranks
@@sandman290873 It's definitely not foolproof 🙄
@@GuyKesTV😂
The sram hollow pin chains are bulletproof, I wont use anything else.😂 I have an accessory mount on the underside of the toptube on my giant, not seen any accessories that fit though......
