I randomly saw a fascinating history lesson when us Brits nuked the USA with a simulated Cold War attack. Really fascinating story with our Vulcan bombers flown by the RAF going into one of the mid western cities undetected and managing to escape undetected.

Same. Kids don't know what FUN is. Growing up in the 70's in Rockingham county, us kids wanted to witness anything hitting the ground at "MachFk". At least we had the county landfill to roll tires and send old appliances off the embankments to their destruction. They don't allow that anymore. SE North Carolinian here. Many of us have known this which is why there’s always a class action lawsuit against the government for it. Also why those of us that know NEVER drink or cook with the tap water.
As a History Channel devotee as a kid, I most certainly heard this story. Operation Chrome Dome ended not just because of the Greenland incident, but because we were able to produce ICBMs that were less expensive to operate than B-52s around the clock. Besides, the B-52s were needed in 'Nam to drop some napalm.
my favorite story is the screwdriver that got lost inside of a nuke. There's a great book called "command and control" that details pretty much every single nuclear accident, and all the safety features that prevented them from becoming disasters. I highly recommend it
American nukes, at least, tend to have a lot of layers of safety. It's basically impossible to get a nuclear yield accidentally. Now, making an accidental dirty bomb...
Great documentary too, my step dad spoke to Mr. Devlin (I think that's his name) who was there when the missle blew up in Arkansa, on a place flight from Florida. He told him about the Doc which he's featured in giving interviews, one of my favorite docs.
Screwdriver with a nuke? Is this the one is Damascus Arkansas on September 18, 1980? If so, it’s actually a comedically a large socket wrench and an improperly fitted Socket. The socket is what fell. I got the story from the man himself Jeff Kennedy back in 2009.
So not only has a screwdriver been lost in a nuke, but one was used to fuck around with on the demon core. We've got very careful scientists apparently
@@robster7787 That's amazing you git the story from him, his interviews in command and control are crazy, lots of emotion. To edit from my previous comment it was Greg Devlin whom my step dad spoke to, showed him pictures ect. From the incident.
Fellow NC resident here, who loves the history of this event. You might ask, "Why did we have a B-52 roaming around with nukes?" In 1961, we didn't have the capability to just launch nukes from a silo and hit Russia. In the event to combat a Russian attack, we wanted a certain amount of B-52s already up in the air and ready to head towards the motherland. (Hence the reason for air refueling) Also, the "armed" switch. It was later found that because of the impact of hitting the ground so hard, it actually bent the level to the armed position, when in reality, it was still in standby. (But that's for you to decide if just a cover-up to downplay the event.)
@@breakarm8782 Seymour used to be a strategic air command base before the USSR collapsed. There were many bases all over that housed B-52's. Even today our strategic bombers are stationed out of the continental US like the B-2s in Missouri.
@McStankDangles makes sense, but also seems like we would have had them a lot closer, as strategically it would make more sense to get the weapon transported over there a lot faster
@@zedkay7396 still bitching about that 😂 buddy if we decide to “storm” the capitol it’ll look a hell of a lot different than the guided tour you’re talking about.
Agreed. Also, losing a nuke is called "broken arrow". America has lost I think about 9-12 if memory serves. Nobody knows how many Russia has lost. Let that sink in.
There's also the SL-1 reactor incident where we had our own little meltdown. The horrifying part was the one reactor technician that seemed to be missing, only to be later found pinned to the ceiling of the reactor building by the control rod he was trying to manhandle into position when it jammed, which is what caused the meltdown in the first place. Unfortunately, none of the skeleton crew monitoring the reactor that night survived, and were all buried far out in the desert due to the fact they were all highly radioactive.
The firefighters freaked the fuck out too because they thought the technician (what was left of him, it was mostly just a torso) might fall back onto the reactor and cause another reaction. All because that tech pulled the control rod a few inches too far up. Of the three men in the room, the two closest died instantly, the third was found by first responders wheezing his last breaths
'We have a broken arrow.' 'What's that?' 'We've lost a nuclear weapon'. 'I don't know what's scarier, losing neuclear weapons, or that it happens so often there's even a term for it!'. Giles Prentice, Broken Arrow
Its funny,my dad hates it here because the way ppl act,at least in charlotte. But his common pessimistic comment would always be "if he could nuke nc he would, then nuke it a second time just so no one survives." Sounds like he almost got his wish back in the 60s.
@@LoganPlessinger your father’s frustration is valid. There’s so many transplants (mainly from up north & California) that come here for the financial industry in Charlotte
Would definitely love to hear more story time with Brandon!! Serious topics, but with lots of comedic relief that makes it a joy to watch. Keep up the great work, Eh!
1958 USAF B-47 accidentally dropped from 30,000 feet onto Mars Bluff, SC a 26 kiloton Mark 6 nuclear bomb, the bomb was missing the nuclear core, but the TNT charge did explode destroying several buildings and sent a family to the hospital. There’s a historical marker by the road and a deep hole.
Brandon doing entertaining educational history content is not something I expected to see. But by god am I happy about it. I watch 2 things on UA-cam nowadays. Weapon content and entertaining educational content. Now one of my favorite creators combined it into one
For those concerned, after the pit is removed all that’s left is a bunch of heavy water (deuterium oxide) and a little bit of lithium fluoride. The heavy water mixes slowly with groundwater and is harmless. The lithium fluoride reacts quickly with minerals in the water and is neutralized. The most hazardous components are the plastics and synthetic rubber components.
@@derekeastman7771 Yeah, I didn't get what was bad about that,no fissile material...no big boom or risk of contamination. The only thing that might pose a problem is leaving classified tech at the site. Even if it was probably mangled beyond recognition from the impact. The chemical composition of the conventional explosives used to trigger the bomb could be found out though.
Everyone knows that the government and military own up to any and all of their mistakes and that if there was any danger left behind they would have told EVERYONE, compensate anyone involved for damages and saved anyone from even the most minute inconvenience. Certainly they wouldnt cover up anything, or tell superiors what they want to hear to prevent personal repercussions, morale degradation inside and out of the military, lawsuits, etc. Smh...
@@babayaga6376 The most secret part of any nuclear weapon is the electronics that detonates those conventional explosives. They must be ridiculously precise and resistant to radiation. They were likely the first thing removed.
True? Well maybe, but it's not like it would have been all that much more trouble to go ahead and grab the rest while they were there, or was it?! If it was then encase, bury and mark with a plaque. If any of the encasement ever shows to the surface then it could be explained as foundation for the plaque. Obviously, for all kinds of reasons, they surely would not leave anything of any size there otherwise.
I actually live in North Carolina, I live about 45-50 minutes from where the bombs fell. My girlfriend basically lives right next to the field where they landed. You can tell exactly where the other bomb is, because no one is allowed to farm around it, so there’s a small ring of trees around we’re it’s buried. Scary as hell.
It’s an implosion device, unless the ignition device causes the explosion it won’t go nuclear. Some ignition from a single point will just result in a conventional explosive spreading out the core. Being buried as far as it is it will be contained underground with worse case radiation poisoning more of the surrounding fields.
maybe the US should have put money into the "make our planes not catastrophically fail longer than 10 years" budget instead of the "make our nukes 250x stronger" budget
I live about about a mile away from the crash site and pass by almost daily. Strange to think there is an unexploded nuke pretty much in my backyard. Largely rural and farming community where entire families and generational wealth were almost wiped out. This shows how small accidents can lead to catastrophic and life changing moments.
Fun fact, during WW2, most people don't know this but a Japanese pilot by the name of Nobuo Fujita, is the only pilot to drop bombs on U.S. soil. It was the only documented operation of Japan putting boots on ground on U.S. soil. The plan was to drop incendiary bombs in hopes of starting forest fires but what the pilot didn't know was that it had just been pissing rain the entire week prior so needless to say, the forest did not become ablaze. Feeling so guilty about the whole ordeal, he actually came back to Oregon in 1962 and offered his samurai sword, as well as planted a redwood tree, as a peace offering, to the citizens of Brookings, Oregon who would have been on the receiving end of a massive wildfire. The citizens of Brookings made Fujita and honors member of Brookings and embraced him with open arms during a historical event. If you fancy a tough hike, you can actually visit the bombing site. So yeah, the Japanese did not just Pearl Harbor, but also made it to Oregon to drop more bombs
I knew almost all Broken Arrow stories, but never have I heard it recounted that entertainingly. Props to you Brandon! Maybe deserving of it's own series? "Brandon talks about bizarre weapons incidents."
As a US History teacher, I love when thee anticdotes are told on a format like youtube! Even though I cant show it in class, you better believe i will be leaving detailed search criteria for my classes so they can watch this on their own! Well presented Brandon! PS... I'd love to hear you tell some of the other Broken Arrow stories! For entertainemnt purposes only of course....not so i can direct my students to them....

Mr teacher, u keep that format up! It was teachers like u that got me threw middle school and high school. Otherwise I just skipped the classes and took the tests and exams and passed with a c lol class of 05
My favorite part of the story is the parachute. You might assume it was a safety feature to land the bomb slowly. But it was there to give time the pilots to leave the area before the explosion. That nuke was really close to go off.
And even with the parachute, it was entirely likely the plane would still be caught in the blast. Because the B-52, while fast compared to the propeller-driven bombers that preceded it (the B-36 most notably) is still just a bit too slow to get completely clear of the blast effects of a multi-megaton nuclear bomb before it goes off.
Not only that but airburst nuclear bombs are more effective than those that go off at ground level. Edit: I'm pretty sure on that bomb the only thing that stopped it from going off was a basic switch that was set to off instead of on
@@andrewtussler3861 i mean, realistically airburst is cleaner.. case in point :castle bravo fallout vs tsar bomb fallout.. difference being on ground test vs air burst... also.. massive yield difference there..
Wait a minute, why did it say 3 crewman died from this? From the airplane? I seriously think sometimes conspiracies are brought up and overthought only because the government truly seems incompetent at its job. Because you assume these are intelligent individuals. But they constantly need their fk ups covered up.
I really enjoyed this video! As a native of NC, I've been here my entire life, so to see you upload about something so interesting is a treat. Keep up the great work!
I lived 4 hours from there as a child. Our government is like the Keystone Cops in action. Laughed hysterically for about the whole story. Funny if it weren’t so scary. Thanks for posting. Great job! Legendary.
I grew up on a nuke base and currently live next to the largest nuke base in the US. I've been to a an alert facility and got to see the buttons to launch an ICBM. My dad was a Tech Seargent in the Air Force and ran the team that did security for the maintenance crews who'd pull the missiles from the ground. He has a lot of stories ranging from the truck carrying a warhead tipping over during a winter storm back in the 70s all the way up to a few guys being bored and shooting gophers with M-16s in the middle of bumfuck Montana.
Brandon having Fat Electrician or Dankula like content at points sounds great honestly. Niche history is always excellent watching and listening content.

I like that you've brought this up. I learned of this a few years ago, from some books of random facts and stories. Anytime I've told people about the government mishandling nukes, they treat me like a conspiracy theorist.
I think the reason they act that way is because the government only mishandled a few out of literally thousands. Also nuclear bombs are outclassed by ballistic missiles which have never been mishandled
@@rigleyrigley4000 I wouldn't even say anymore, unfortunately through human history we see that the majority of people have little to no interest in researching controversial topics

Now consider that this has happened on the watch of the supposedly "best trained military in the world." If this is from "the best" then what that means for the "worst" hardly bears thinking on, does it?
Please let this be the start of a history series! I love history and firearms and watching you cover both would be awesome. Call it "History with Herrera" or something lol
The history guy is a great channel that’s covered a lot of these incidents during the Cold War. Fantastic story telling although classy.the guy wears a bow tie.
Please for the love of god do more videos like this with Nick! Also fun fact, my great uncle was one of those B-52 pilots serving with the Strategic Air Command, and he was in the service from ww2 to vietnam. Wish i got to meet the guy, but never did.
I've been a service plumber for years but about 6-7 years ago when I first got in a truck they sent me out from Raleigh NC to where these bombs landed (Eureka, NC?) some random German guy who flew all they were here to NC stopped at the end of the driveway at the house I was working on and asked me "where are the bombs?" I was like "where are the bombs? What do you mean?" Then it dawned on me I saw signs through the town talking about a bomb site. I had no directions for him but told him I saw directions in town a few miles down the road. Went home and looked it up and saw this whole story about the plane crashing with a bomb.
My great grandma told me a story of when she was a kid, she was playing in the woods and one day she heard a loud scream and looked up, finding a dead pilot stuck in a tree, she ran off to tell her parents and that's the last she ever head of it. The timeliness line up so in my heart my Geegee was there during probably one of the most terrifying nuclear accidents in the US
Did you pay attention in history class? Or are you currently in school either your getting the the diluted history they teach these days or you didnt pay attentiontheres plenty ofninteresting history out there its recorded in these crazy things called books sorta like a phone with acssess to google except no power and no porn and only experts in the subjects publish them so no half assed info either just throwing that out there for consideration
It happened in my Grandparents field. My mom watched the fireball from her bedroom window. My grandparents would leave snacks and coffee in their mailbox, which happened to be the armed security post for the area.
and if the fat electrician makes an occasional appearance its even better because they just bounce humor, sarcasm and actual information, as you said, very well off each other.
Only lived there while stationed at Ft. Bragg, but kinda feel like I did my last bit of growing up into a full man there too. Spent most of my 20s there. Before I was a paratrooper, I was lacking in certain areas of wisdom that I now find indispensable.
Fun fact the first bomb he talked about the one with the parachute nearly detonated the parachute was meant to give the bomb enough time to explode the only thing that kept the bomb from exploding was a small little switch on the bomb if that switch had been switched the entire city would be a crater
Note to self: NEVER take a sip of any type of drink while watching one of Brandon's videos. My computer/desk almost received a darwin award on multiple occasions throughout this video. You're hilarious bud, love your content!!
Keep doing these Brandon. You're good at narrating these types of things with good humor. History lessons with Brandon could be a pretty big success. 👍
Yeah but he shouldn’t try too hard. There’s literally millions of people outside the US that will deny any western government could do such a thing and that everything in domestic life was specifically made to ensure their life is more comfortable and not to kill their grandparents alongside their enemies.
I grew up in Goldsboro, mom stationed at Seymour Johnson. Remember learning about this in school, and learning at an early age to not trust our government.
Not at all. We didnt end ww2 when we dropped the bomb on Hiroshima…. That was the beginning of us being involved. And Russia was who killed hitler. His history on that was all off…
My mama was 15 and living her high school life in Winston Salem. She had no clue this happened! I grew up in Whitsett, NC (between Greensboro and Burlington) and still live here. I’m so thankful they didn’t detonate. I can’t imagine what Eastern NC would be like.
Don't forget, one nuke is still missing around Tybee Island (near Savannah) Georgia (this is a separate incident from the NC one but goes with the theme). Also the conventional portion of a nuclear bomb blew up part of a farm in Mars Bluff, SC when a B-47 accidentally dropped the bomb.
It's also important to remember that within 2 years a nuclear bomb is basically just a big pile of slightly concerning scrap metal because the enriched bit that sets the whole process into motion has degraded to a point where it can no longer make the big boom happen. This is also why Russia's nuclear capability is probably vastly overstated, there are all kinds of really expensive bits on nuclear warheads and ICBMs that need regular replacement to remain functional and if the state of the equipment they use on a regular basis is anything to go by most of those doomsday tubes are about as potent as underwater fireworks
@gifthorse3675 no problem. It happens to all of us (especially with the amount of easily accessed and manipulated information now). It would be cool if they did find it, but the mystery of it still being lost is also kinda cool. I also would not be surprised if some part of the government had found it years ago but just kept it classified.
"I don't know what's more terrifying, That we have a term for LOSING a nuclear weapon, OR that it happens SO often that we need said term!!!" -Some guy in the movie "Broken Arrow"-
The BUFF back then had a crew of 6. Each had an ejection seat. Upper deck crew ejected upwards, lower deck crew (nav and bomb) ejected downwards (what could go wrong there?) Anyway, the plane could carry up to 3 more crew, either instructors or reliefs, who in theory would bail out through the hatches left open by the lower deck crew ejecting. From what I've read, that Captain you mentioned was the only man to ever successfully manually abandon a B-52 in flight. Really reassuring isn't it...

Next you should do a video about how a Titan II missile exploded in its silo outside of Little Rock Arkansas and launched its warhead out of the silo and onto a nearby ditch and miraculously didn't go off. Funniest part of that story is that it was because a mechanic dropped a socket down the silo.
Imagine being that mechanic n dropping ur socket and seeing a missile fly off cause of it. You know bro was thinking to himself how he was finna disappear or atleast get fired
@@ScooterMcAwesomeness rather more than just a button, but I was talking about it's detonation mechanism. You could blow a nuke up with C4 and it still wouldn't go off(would make the area unlivable because of plutonium and uranium dust though).

Iirc, there were multiple incidents with the Demon Core.
Which is why the Army isn’t allowed to operate nuclear reactors anymore 😂
Are they still radioactive?
The firefighters freaked the fuck out too because they thought the technician (what was left of him, it was mostly just a torso) might fall back onto the reactor and cause another reaction. All because that tech pulled the control rod a few inches too far up. Of the three men in the room, the two closest died instantly, the third was found by first responders wheezing his last breaths
A lot of us in the Nuclear Navy called the pinned man Reactor Jesus. He died for your shims.

Exactly, no risk of spontaneous nuclear reaction. They recovered the important part and called it.
Ur girl should get tested, and I don't mean STDs.
They're buried in a mountain of concrete lol
It’s an implosion device, unless the ignition device causes the explosion it won’t go nuclear. Some ignition from a single point will just result in a conventional explosive spreading out the core. Being buried as far as it is it will be contained underground with worse case radiation poisoning more of the surrounding fields.
Wtf
maybe the US should have put money into the "make our planes not catastrophically fail longer than 10 years" budget instead of the "make our nukes 250x stronger" budget
I live about about a mile away from the crash site and pass by almost daily. Strange to think there is an unexploded nuke pretty much in my backyard.

Edit: I'm pretty sure on that bomb the only thing that stopped it from going off was a basic switch that was set to off instead of on
@@tehgehrmanwalf9765 Oh yeah airburst nukes are no joke as the radiation is scattered much further than if it was a ground detonation.

@@Esotericgroupwe’re talking bout North Carolina not Texas 😂
😂 you think you’d be Alive lmfao
I’m from Goldsboro, used to drive by that Nuke Swallowing Swamp daily
Do more! Especially having Nick on to preface it just made it cooler. You should definitely keep “collabing” with him like this.
The History channel did a story about this some yrs ago. I heard about it when I was stationed at Camp LeJeune in the 80's. There's also a missing nuke off the coast of Georgia, imagine that.
Love it dude. As a fellow former (in location but not in heart) North Carolinian, already familiar with the story, I really appreciate you for bringing this to your channel. I love all of your content, I appreciate how you handled your take on this historical event, and I hope you make more content like this in the future. (Throwing up my horns for Bull City)
I would love to see more vids like this. The Fat Electrician has got me hooked on this type of content, and seeing similar types of entertainment and learning from you is always welcome. I'm here for it 100%!
I absolutely love Uncle Brandons "Story Time." His stories are so lively and informative. Keep up the positive and reassuring 411's.
We have placks like that everywhere in north carolina ,we used to have statues too but they tore them down ,they dont like that kind of history here .keep up the amazing vidoes buddy .
Next you should do a video about how a Titan II missile exploded in its silo outside of Little Rock Arkansas and launched its warhead out of the silo and onto a nearby ditch and miraculously didn't go off. Funniest part of that story is that it was because a mechanic dropped a socket down the silo.
Meh, it takes a *lot* of stuff to detonate a nuke.
@@vyor8837it takes alot of stuff to make a nuke, it only takes a button to set one off.
@@RabbitArmsIt would be an awesome Bio-Dome story.
I find it truly unbelievable that something can be so absolutely hilarious, yet totally horrifying at the same time! Anyway, great narrative skills I must say. Thank you!

I'd love to hear Brandon talk more about history. His take on the Revolutionary War, etc would be epic! Start from the top! If we forget our history, we're doomed.
Its crazy that i work less than 5 miles away from the area those bombs were dropped...
