    That was a great introduction. Now let's remember dukes, marquises, and such WERE nobles, they were the ruling class. As they lost political power, nobility was reserved only for royals. And aristocracy can be without a title. A highly respected group in society, an Earl, or a distant descendent of nobles can be considered nowadays an "aristocrat".

      In Western Europe at least there were 2 Sources of Nobility.. Secular and Clerical . The highest was an Emperor ( above a King ) and his “ counter” was the Pope ( and the ranking went down Archbishop , Bishop etc etc. ) Emperors and Popes could and did literally fight each other .. an Emperor could for example kill or try get another Pope Elected .. a Pope on the other hand could “ interdict” an Emperor or King. The punishment of a Pope might sound like nothing .. but vows in the Middle Ages were super important. Since you validly pointed out than nobility was ( and is ) nothing other than gangsters . If a Pope were to release all the subjects of a King from their obligations to the King .. well then the Barrons and Dukes etc could literally .. ignore the king ( and overthrow him)

      Emperor was/is indeed the highest ranking, but very rare (only two or three in Europe at a time). In modern times, zero European Emperors/Empresses (globally, only one still exists, that being the Emperor of Japan, but I'm pretty sure they have their own set of titles and stuff)

    it would have been good also to explain the origins of these titles in Latin:
    prince = princeps [first person]
    duke = dux [ducis] = leader
    Count = comes [comitis] companion
    etc

      i really wish someone made a clear technical structure of noble titles so that we at least understand the technical terms. yes we know in reality it was all over the place but this is the same way like Caesar augustus wasnt technical a king or emperor,he just multiple titles and authorities granted just like the praetorian guard technical protected the emperor and was beneath him. but to understand all the real power dynamics we first have to understand how it was technical roughly structured before understand the actual power structures because most of the time they always several granted authorities from the upper class nobles that made them technical under them , but in reality it was different. first we have to understand how it should work in the structure before we explain how it was loopholed like emperors should be the most powerful man but several "willingly " granted "" authorities made them weaker but i swear the archduke with several kingly powers is still a lowly humble duke like how augustus was only the princeps not even a consuls he just had only command over Some provinces where the most legions and the most money was

    It is pronounced MarqUEss as opposed to MarQIoness. With its female counterpart pronounced Marshoness.
    I wish you all the best, ensure you learn pronunciations beforehand on words you may not have encountered before (A simple Google search will do!).
    Edit: Quite a few errors in this video, at least on the English side of the aristocracy. Baron-Marquess were all referred as Lords/Ladies with Dukes addressed as Your Grace.
    Barons did have responsibilities, as was the case with all of the aristocracy (which, by definition, means RUILING class. They ruled) and heavily took part in the day-to-day governance of their territories as well as the people within them, and many other things.
    Do ensure you perform your research, my friend, all the best.

    There's quite a bit wrong here. Kings and queens are not the highest rank of nobility, royalty is a separate and superior category, and it's a crucial distinction. Monarchs aren't beholden to a higher authority for their rank, while nobles hold their rank and titles by royal authority. Royal houses come from the nobility, but once they're a royal dynasty they're no longer noble.

    Nobility controls certain territories what about the cities? Is it under the control mayors or a title similar to a mayor or is it directly controlled by the nobility?

  • @FizCap

    1:35 isn’t exactly true depending on the time period, in the early medieval ages most kingdoms were decentralized and the king only ruled over a small part of the land while having to rely on the nobility to not overthrow them

      A marquess is about the same as an earl except they control land on the border so it would be called a county. And for a viscount it would probably be called a county, a viscounty, or a vassal
