Its a standard requirement in the Oil Industry. It probably means that the device is intrinsically safe, i.e., it is safe to use in an environment that contains flammable vapors. A lot of devices like cellphones, cameras, flashlights, walkie talkies etc have to be certified before they can be used on oil Riggs and ships that carry oil for this very reason.

This reminds me of the old Inspiron laptop I had. That thing was as rugged as a brick and the ability to have a CD drive or two batteries was fantastic and something more devices need to do. If only this wasn't so expensive..

An explosive atmosphere rating means it can safely be used in volatile environments like gas production (propane,natural gas etc) plants and it won't cause an explosion....a lot of flashlights have similar ratings.

For linus: An explosive atmosphere could be working inside a grain silo collecting data for some reason or other as the dust from the grain can become explosive due to its nature and the amount inside it. dont think you have a grain silo attached to the new building unless you are really into granola.

Where I work explosive atmosphere is a serious issue due to working with natural gas on a daily basis. Things have to be intrinsically safe (typically referred to as class 1 div 2) in order to be used on the job site.
Explosive Atmosphere is generally an atmosphere with highly flammable environment where the air can literally explode upon a spark. Generally you aren't allowed to carry certain equipment within such zones like electronics since the heat the equipment can sometimes generate enough to lit the gases up causing a chain reaction.
So I assume it is has been crafted for such atmospheres as well, for example using it within nuclear facilities as a way of noting different numbers/dates and compile information without having to write it all down/try remember it.

I love the concept of the "ToughBook" class of laptops, so at least someone is finally doing a good "ToughTablet". Definitely something a lot of people could make use of.

I think this is the perfect Tablet for anyone working on a constant time schedule in the field, very nicely accompanied by the feature list (GPS, Serialport ...).
I actually use these every day and have for the last year. They're pretty sweet for work.

Explosive atmosphere, probably referring to ATEX, means that if you use this laptop in an area with gas fumes, it won't create any sparks that could blow you up. Very useful if you work in the oil/gas industry.

Fyi, "explosive atmosphere" is where the air around you is volatile enough that any spark could cause an ignition and therefore an explosion. For example, near a gas pump, at a rocket fuel refinery, methane plant, coal mine etc.

A lot of people fail to realize that this is mainly marketed toward DOD and military contractors. As an aircraft maintainer, this would be wayyyyyyyyy more useful than the crappy iPads we have now. Good job on Dell's part!
My guess for the explosive atmosphere rating is that if there are any highly explosive substances in the air that would detonate because of the smallest spark then this device is tested not to create any. If the usage scenario for this would be like in a first response situation in a chemical plant.

explosive atmosphere simply means if there is a room where there's a danger of explosions, and a spark could cause an explosion. The tablet won't in any way cause a spark that could ignite potentially dangerous gasses. (you can use it in explosive atmospheres.)

I can vouch for the use of the serial port.
I used to laugh at motherboards that still come with old ports like that, but I've been taking college-level programming courses and we're learning why they are still useful. We do a lot of stuff with microcontrollers and very low-level code (meaning it's closer to the raw binary with less UI flourish) and on that level USB is a real pain to work with. It's much easier to code with serial ports because it's more... straightforward.
63 degrees is not actual very high. If you are struggling to find shade in Australia on a summer day. 42 degree day. I raised my iphone 4 to 89 degrees C so hot i could not hold it. Devise shut down and would not work but did irreversible damage to the battery. but not as bad as i expected. For divice that i use in the sun regularly i paint white it is amazing how effective it is.

I think the explosive atmosphere has something to do being safe under operation when there may be dangerous concentrations of flammable gases in the atmosphere.
I really dig the dual hot-swappable batteries though. The last time I saw something like that was on an old Macintosh PowerBook G3 my family had while I was growing up in the late 90s. Especially when lately it seems like everyone has been jumping on the long-life built-in/non-user-serviceable battery pack boat.
