I like mix A. Mix B seemed a little harsh in the top end, but hey, I've got horrible tinnitus, so more top end tends to suck for me. Great job as always, Glenn!
B sound good for when you are a guitar player and you wanna hear yourself through everything. With vocals it would sound way too sharp and high and you wouldn’t get an even mix. A is definitely more balanced. You can hear everything and the bass and guitar sound better “glued” together. And really important there is room for bass
This is not what Slate claims. They never said : it's better than studio monitors. They said if your room is not treated like a professional studio, you can achieve a professional mix that translates perfectly everywhere with the help of their technology. Also a mix relies on the person's skills and personal taste. Put a professional mix engineer compared to a beginner, you won't get the same result. But can you get a perfect balanced mix with those headphones and the software? Yes, without a doubt.
Preferred mix A. Everything sat nice in its space. B had some extra fizzy high mids to my ear (not on the bestest headphones) that felt like it ended up as a lower quality mix but quite close
B is on the headphones because the low end is stripped out and that tells me the bass was heavier in the headphones. And im judging this from 1 shitty cheap wireless earbud in my left ear
Mix B has next to no bass, there is an unpleasant resonant thump in the snare drum, there's too much high-mids in the guitar making it sound boxy, and the cymbals have too much treble leading to the mix sounding piercing.
Honestly, that’s a tough call. First pass was on my phone speaker. It was a clear win for A. Had to get some earbuds to check it out again. Seems like A has more low end, but B has more clarity. I think I actually prefer B. But I’d want to put some vocals to it and see how that goes.
B seemed to have what I can only describe as a "wider" sound, whereas A seemed to be more mid focused. Both sounded great though, but IMO I'd use B for rhythm and A to track leads
Mix A every instrument was standing by itself while Mix B the instruments got blended to fit the entire sound as a whole if that makes sense. Mix A is from the monitors while Mix B headphones
They sounded close enough to my ears to have considering pulling the trigger on the VSX system. Considering my living arrangement has acoustic treatment and high volumes off the table, this is my best option to get the ball rolling.
Mix A sounds to have slightly more bottom end, while mix B is a little tighter. So I guess it comes down to reference, if the headphones accurately reproduce accurate bottom end or if they make too much or too little. Either way still great mixes.
Mix B has more clarity. Mix a is muddy in comparison. And I can only assume the headphones would pump more highs at your ears so you would have compensated by bringing them down so I think the one with the clarity is the studio monitors
I liked both, the mix A was more clear to me in my headphones and more modern sounding, the B mix was more rough, raw, had more energy but sounded more like 20 years ago sound.
Pretty dang similar, TBH. If I had to pick, I'd say mix B, by the thinnest of margins. Mix B seems to be very slightly brighter around 2-4k, which helps my old ears.
I did it as a blind listen so I had no idea when the mixes switched over and also tried not to be ultra attentive in the listening (like the average listener!) VERY difficult to tell apart IMHO and I'd say I liked different aspects of both With a super attentive listen, I'd say Mix A is slightly better
I was only listening through my phone speaker, but judging by that, I prefer mix A. B has a harsher high end and the drums are so prominent that the guitars sound like background music for them. It reminds me of old school Swedish death metal's abrasive sound and it could work for that if the drums were a bit less promenant.
Guitar player here, missing 70dB & 50dB on the top end of my hearing so my opinion might not be very valuable, but I liked mix B better. Seemed to have a little more "presence.".
I’m gonna guess A is the Adam monitors mixed with an ear that uses them in the same studio space all the time, and B is the VSX with a different room than you’re used to and a short adjustment period
I like mix A more (just by listening on phone speakers). Seemed more balanced to me. the high end in mix B sounds a little harsh. Mixing can be done on headphones you just gotta know what to compensate for/adjust for when listening to them. Have I tried to do this: yes. Have I failed: every single time yes
(A) for sure! And I guess, it might be explained by the fact, that the most of headphones have a bass frequency boost. So during the mixing process we will natively compensate it, am I wrong? 🤷♂️ Huh… that gives me new idea, though! I hate senheiser headphones, because they have really annoying shift to the high frequency (to my taste). So maybe they are good for mixing but not for listening? Would be great to see other point of view 🤔
After listening, is double times, mix A is more well-balanced, and has more low end. Which leads me to believe that mix A was mixed with the Adam monitors. Mix B is more pronounced in the upper mid range area. But lacking balance from lack of lows. Which always happens when I mix with headphones.
I’d say it’s possible to mix in either. Depends how you developed your mixing ears. I’ve met some guys who have solid mixing and mastering but did it in headphones and others who’ve done it in speakers. I did mine in headphones and a laptop because of my roommates and bleeding noise plus the room quality ain’t the best to mix in. And if I need to mix in a different environment I always had that option.
I'd say mix A is speakers cause it sounds more like i remember your mixes sounding , didn't notice anything standing out in any of them, they were just different in the balance
I seem to have more even clarity on A, however when I’m listening with my eyes closed I cannot tell when the A/B switches. I had to look to see that B was playing. So pretty much have the most unreliable opinion 😅
Mix A. Seemed more hi-fi, while Mix B seemed to lack a certain depth. I listened on Edifier MR4 monitors in both monitor mode and multimedia mode, and with Boom3D set to both the windows preset and the flat preset. On the windows preset, the difference was more noticeable. On the flat preset, you could still hear a difference between A and B, but it didn't seem as drastic. Also, gave a listen on some OneOdio Monitor 80 open back headphones, once again with Boom3D on the windows preset and the flat preset, and again the difference wasn't drastic when set to flat, but Mix A was still more hi-fi sounding than Mix B.
Judging from my shitty phone speaker I'd say A.
Same I agree it's A
Same
🤣🤣🤣 same
Did he ever post the answer of which one was the VSX?
same
To me, the instruments seem more balenced and defined in mix A.
Mix A is superior for sure
If mix A turns out to be the headphones I'm gonna turn into the living embodiment of the "shut up and take my money" meme so fast
I own these since I don't have a mix room that is treated. I highly recommend VSX for the cost but mostly the mixes I get.
Listened on headphones, too. Still both sound just fine.
I like mix A. Mix B seemed a little harsh in the top end, but hey, I've got horrible tinnitus, so more top end tends to suck for me. Great job as always, Glenn!
Agreed, my tinnitus brother!
A is more balanced while B lacks the low end, so I say A is better.
B sound good for when you are a guitar player and you wanna hear yourself through everything. With vocals it would sound way too sharp and high and you wouldn’t get an even mix.
A is definitely more balanced. You can hear everything and the bass and guitar sound better “glued” together. And really important there is room for bass

Preferred mix A. Everything sat nice in its space. B had some extra fizzy high mids to my ear (not on the bestest headphones) that felt like it ended up as a lower quality mix but quite close
Mix A is definitely better.
Listened to both mixes on studio monitors and on Sennheiser HD650 headphones. In both cases, I greatly preferred Mix A.
So what was the answer to this ?
B is on the headphones because the low end is stripped out and that tells me the bass was heavier in the headphones. And im judging this from 1 shitty cheap wireless earbud in my left ear
Both sounded just fine.
For me mix A because to my ears seems fuller, less harsh and the guitar sits in the right place.
Mix A was FRICKIN KILLING IIIIIIT !!!
might wanna do this again glenn they just released v4 of vsx and it is night and day difference
They're both pretty badass mixes. The first one is thicker. 🤷♂️
Doesn't really, its just uninspired, unoriginal crap either way.
Mix B has next to no bass, there is an unpleasant resonant thump in the snare drum, there's too much high-mids in the guitar making it sound boxy, and the cymbals have too much treble leading to the mix sounding piercing.
A is the winner for me.
Hi Glenn. Are we going to get a follow up on this? Thanks.
I’d like to know which one was mixed with VSX
Both sound good.
It's so good that it sounds like you exported a well mixed track and then put a random "B" in the video 🤣
The first mix was nice
I liked Mix a more, every track clearly shone through and Had ITS space and glue in the mix
mix a sounded better to me. I like the yellow font of mix b better though. 🤷🏽♂️
I gotta go with A, however I could see where stylistically B could work.
Mix A sounds more balanced. Mix B has harsher highs especially on the drums.
Mix A for phone
Mix B for car
I like the Mix B, I hear a bit more of the high end and the clank of the bass strings, sounds great
I thought that too.. the clarity is better ❤
Got to be the second one for me. The top end opens up a little better
First one for sure, second one seemed tinnier and I had more trouble picking out the instruments
B sounds like mixed on headphones😊
A had a better balance, but B had a brighter punch, which I personally like.
I don't know why but I really like the crispy highs in mix B
Mix A definitely. The guitar seemed like it got lost in B.
I liked A. I should add I am not a producer/engineer type AT ALL. The A mix just sounds quite a bit fuller and bigger to me. *shrugs
On my headphones I liked mix A more. It was reminiscient of In Flames, one of my favourite bands. Cheers from Finland!🇫🇮
Mix A preferred for me. Listened on Kali LP6 monitors.
B sounded clearer, but also lacked a bit of low end
It’s hard to tell with without vocals or clean/acoustic instruments. If your mixing instrumental metal you have more options
Exactly...
How can a professional sound engineer do this kind of clickbait videos...
I liked both, the mix A was more clear to me in my headphones and more modern sounding, the B mix was more rough, raw, had more energy but sounded more like 20 years ago sound.
I like the A mix more, I can admit I know nothing of mixing, but I like being able to hear the guitar at least that's what it sounded like to me!
Mixing in A was definitely clearer but mix B sounded a little heavier. Idk how to describe it
Mix a bit both sounded good
Mix A kicks ASS!!! HANDS DOWN!!!!!
Both mixes sound close to me, but Mix B seems to have some hot sauce on it. I'm having difficulty trying to explain why, but it seems more cohesive.
I preferred B. I’ve heard loads of mixes that sound like A, so B was just something new and interesting to me.
He must be half deaf, screaming at us 😂
Pretty dang similar, TBH. If I had to pick, I'd say mix B, by the thinnest of margins. Mix B seems to be very slightly brighter around 2-4k, which helps my old ears.
A definitely
A hands down! Listened in car and on phone speakers. On A individual notes on the guitar were actually audible on the phone
On my HiFi, mix A was more alive, and had very much low-end, as compare to B which sounded flatter, narrower and more "digital". I preferred A.
I did it as a blind listen so I had no idea when the mixes switched over and also tried not to be ultra attentive in the listening (like the average listener!) VERY difficult to tell apart IMHO and I'd say I liked different aspects of both
With a super attentive listen, I'd say Mix A is slightly better
Sounds the same on my phone speaker haha
I was only listening through my phone speaker, but judging by that, I prefer mix A. B has a harsher high end and the drums are so prominent that the guitars sound like background music for them. It reminds me of old school Swedish death metal's abrasive sound and it could work for that if the drums were a bit less promenant.
second one was brighter and nasal in the high mids...I think i like the first one!
A is for me. ❤
If I were a client and I got either mix, I'd be happy. However putting them side to side I'd pick A purely based on personal preference
I mean they are different, A was balanced but flat, B was a harsh in the high end but definitely felt more dynamic.
Guitar player here, missing 70dB & 50dB on the top end of my hearing so my opinion might not be very valuable, but I liked mix B better. Seemed to have a little more "presence.".
A sounds fuller, and more professional. It wouldn’t surprise me if A was done on those headphones
Mix A sounds crisp and clean to me where mix B sounds slightly muted
I liked the first mix 🤷♂️
I’m gonna guess A is the Adam monitors mixed with an ear that uses them in the same studio space all the time, and B is the VSX with a different room than you’re used to and a short adjustment period
I like mix A more (just by listening on phone speakers). Seemed more balanced to me. the high end in mix B sounds a little harsh. Mixing can be done on headphones you just gotta know what to compensate for/adjust for when listening to them. Have I tried to do this: yes. Have I failed: every single time yes
a for adams because of the pronounced highs they put out, that wouldnt allow for a harsh mix like b
A for sure 👌
I prefer A through my speakers and headphones. B was too scooped for me and the highs were to harsh for this style.
I love Mix A. The 2nd one seemed a bit thin? Lacking punch?
Mix A for me too.
(A) for sure! And I guess, it might be explained by the fact, that the most of headphones have a bass frequency boost. So during the mixing process we will natively compensate it, am I wrong? 🤷♂️
Huh… that gives me new idea, though! I hate senheiser headphones, because they have really annoying shift to the high frequency (to my taste). So maybe they are good for mixing but not for listening? Would be great to see other point of view 🤔
Mix B sounds brighter to me, but I'm hard pressed to say which I prefer. They sound very close to one another.
I think A sounds more clean. B has something more brutal sounding in it tho, and I like that too :D
After listening, is double times, mix A is more well-balanced, and has more low end. Which leads me to believe that mix A was mixed with the Adam monitors. Mix B is more pronounced in the upper mid range area. But lacking balance from lack of lows. Which always happens when I mix with headphones.
Mix A was done on monitors
I like the A version better, the guitars in B were too dark for my taste. But the mix was great either way.
I definetly like mix a more, it seems more relaxed in the highs and a bit more balanced mids. Die high mids to highs in b sound a bit more piercing
yes
I'd say mix A is speakers cause it sounds more like i remember your mixes sounding , didn't notice anything standing out in any of them, they were just different in the balance
My mixes have improved since using VSX. I reckon they were used on mix A because my results come out beefier.
I prefer mix b as you have a clearer separation between kick/bass and guitar. Not good for vocals but that's not the assigned task.
I'm listening on my KRK monitors and I prefer Mix A. It sounds more well rounded to me. Mix B has some harsh top end stuff I wasn't hearing in A.
I seem to have more even clarity on A, however when I’m listening with my eyes closed I cannot tell when the A/B switches. I had to look to see that B was playing.
So pretty much have the most unreliable opinion 😅
honestly couldn't tell the difference from my laptop speakers. From my AT 30s, I prefer mix A. The mids in mix B sound a bit too scooped
Definitely A after listening to it on a few different things. B felt like it lost all the weight from the mix.
It's close, but I'd pick A.
I like B Better I personally find I can hear each instrument individually better in the mix!!? But what do I know? Just have fun peace and Love!
I'll go for Mix B. The bass sounds clearer to me.
Mix A by far. That’s your studio monitors.
