They gained zamindaris under the British who couldn't control so much land and also they were trying to appease both muslims and hindus. and before british it was the mughal kingdom so muslims controlled the peasants. Plus the states of UP, Bengal and BIhar had very few hindu zamindaars because of 1. high muslims population and 2. these states were directly under the british.

Zameen Dar mean in our context land allocated by Mughal or other such rulers to person who they can trust, provide revenew collection and who could provide military force on their behalf ones needed. I am from Bihar and 95% of Zamindars of Bihar belonged to three Hindu castes alone, namely, Maithil Brahmins, Bhumihars and Rajputs. Muslim Zamindars were mere 5-10%. There's a wikipedia page titled "Zamindars of Bihar". Go read it and don't spread misinformation. Almost all Zamindars in Bihar belonged to Hindu Upper-Castes and even today Hindu upper-castes hold far far greater lands than any other community including the entire muslim community of Bihar.

Lol. I'm Bengali and my family was hindu zamindars. My mom's family and my dad's family, both sides were big land lords. We used to organise big Durga Puja at our home. Even today most of my close Hindi Hindu friends are also from zamindari descendants. So this conversation was quite imprudent and funny.

I am a Hindu & my grandfather was a huge zamindar. He had 750 farmers under him working on his land. In 1950s, the govt appealed to him and he gave up 50% of his land to the farmers under him for free. By 1960s, he had given them 90%.
We now have with us about 4% of the total land now.

Karachi is part of Sindh province, not UP, Bihar, Punjab or Bengal. Also, Karachi and Lahore are cities, not Zamidar Lands. There were not many Hindu Zamindars in Punjab. Also, he didn't talk about Sikhs. Also, he never claimed that Zamidar was not abolished in India.

There were hindu zamindars prior to independence, infact they were numerically more. But due to abolition of zaminadari system, their power decreased politically and socially in independent India. However with wadera system in Pakistan, the panded elite still weilded power. They also never had a land reform and bhoodan movement of vinobhave.

@@vinsin328 I'm from bengal so I think I have a opinion in this matter . Bengal was under a Muslim nabab but almost 100% of the zamindars were hindus . Now you may ask why would that be the case ? A Muslim nabab should and would appoint a Muslim right? But throughout the northern India except the power center dehli Muslim control was arbitrary. They were mainly concerned about taxation, very different from the initial days of religiocentrism . The native rajas and maharajas ruled over huge chunks ( in bengal Maharaj of Nadia, Maharaj of burdwan, Maharaj of bishnupur, Maharaj of coochbehar, Maharaj of natore etc etc) .They favored the brahmins and kayasthas as landlords a.k.a zamindars . Muslim nababs had no problem as they merely had a secondary/tertiary control and as long as they are getting the desired taxes. Another major reason was the fact that the majority of Muslims were converted working class not the rich preexisting aristocrats ( but yes there were some) . You may also learn that eventhough Muslim population was increasing in both East and west Pakistan, Muslims were exclusively the subjects ( especially in East Pakistan a.k.a bangladesh).Hindus constituted majority of urban population in the popular urban centers like Dhaka , chittagong and were especially huge in centers like Karachi and Lahore compared their actual population in the country. Later great influx of them happened in 1947 . Not to diminute the Muslim businesses but majority of businesses even in Pakistan were sindhi , jains and marwadis , same for Sikhs and hindus in panjab who established themselves again in india even after being overnight refugees.
Same was bihar especially mithila region as Muslims hardly ever controlled it ( it was under darbhanga raj , briefly controlled by akbar defeating the oiniwar dynasty ruling the regionsince 12th century). I can't say much about UP but it might have been the same .
So you see the conversation that happened be it by force or by will , it happened with disparity,Economic disparity being the most visible one. Thus the result and it was one of the reason Muslims wanted a different nation ( in bangladesh a huge land grabbing violence happened after the partition!! Hindu zamindars either left the country overnight or were murdered with their whole families)

Amarkot is in Sindh. He only talked about UP, Punjab, Bengal and Bihar. Also, Amarkot is ruled by his King not by his Zamindar.

I came from zamindar family in East Bengal. We had enough land more than modern day Karachi. Most land was swapped for lands in West Bengal post partition

He is more or less wrong about Hindus not being zamindars and feudals. Hindu families still have large land holdings in UP Bihar ,Punjab, Bengal Haryana and many other states. Why so many people from Bihar and UP migrate to cities like Mumbai and Delhi is because of the existing feudalism. One thing that set Pakistan and Indian people apart is the modern education. Majority of Indians prioritise on good quality education to their children..There are still commonalities between Indian and Pakistani people but thanks to a robust political system and the establishment which helps in implementation of government run policies for benefit of common people in india. This Gentleman must revisit the Indian history.😊

I am a south indian hindu, on both sides we are landlords that too large holdings. 😂😂 we are the first settlers on india so we are in control of the lands. Common sense is not common in the world. In Pakistan, it’s missing altogether.

Do mot agree that hindus were not landlords. In east bengal most of the big landlords were hindus who became landless after partition. The difference is that hindu landlords were also professionally qualified.
In british India Hindus were big zamindars, even My ancestors were zamindars but after Independence Nehru abolished zamindari rights.
Not just zamindari but most Hindu princely states Maratha, Sikh, Rajput, Kashmir, Mysore or Travancore had to give up their power and control - if they could adjust in a growing India and become productive (say a Jaswant Singh, a Karan Singh or a Jyotiraditya Scindia) - why did the tinbox recent convert bhaiyyas of UP and Punjab become useless?
India also have landholding feudal lords, but their do not exert as much power as in Pakistan. For example:- Indian Panjab is a state totally under Jatt Sikh landlords, that is why you see no industrialization there.

This is total non-sense , India was full of zamindars in Karnataka, AP Kerala and dont forget Madya Pradesh (pretty much in all states). Most of it was owned by Hindus, India under Nehru nationalized a lot of the large plots of agricultural land. I know this as my own family had to give up large plots of land for national development projects.

Hindu: Burdwan, Hoogly, Howrah, Midnapore, Calcutta,Jalpaiguri, Rajshahi, Dinajpur, Malda, Rangpur, Mymensingh
Muslims: Murshidabad, Birbhum, Bankura, 24 Parganas, Jessore, Bogra, Tiperra, Noakhali, Faridpur, Bakarganj, Dacca, Chittagong
Muslim Zamindars were not usually used to spend money on havelis/Mahal, art and culture. They were more interested in converting people.

Much older than zamindari or even monarchy is the Hindu caste system which did emphasize knowledge and learning - this is the earliest system which placed the priest above the king in social hierarchy. This was copied by Abrahamic religion such as Christianity and Islam and was successful for quite sometime. But B-grade converts in most of the subcontinent never understood learning or meritocracy and how that can be used to advance their society and country. Currently they roam around like orphaned beggars.

I don't know who this elder man is but ..this is not true there are very big and huge 'Zameerdaar's' before independence in my family only..my mothers grand father was him self a big zameendar...had huge lands under him...and we are from proper northern part of India and we of Hindu lineage.

I know what he is trying to say, but he actually categorized it incorrectly. I think he is confusing the word Hindu with just the Brahmin caste, who were not rulers but had always monopolized education, knowledge, intellectual skills, and cultural production. And yes, it is true that this Brahminism and Brahminical mindset (in both good and bad ways) have influenced modern India's mindset and progress significantly. But that does not mean that all Hindus were literally just Brahmins and nothing else. In the last 1000 years, Hindus may have never ruled all of India at once BUT most Zamindars, Talukdars, landowners etc were Hindus. In Bengal, most precolonial Zamindars were Hindus. Hindus were also big merchants and traders, scholars and priests, and many were laborers and farmers. Unfortunately Muslims were either badshahs and nawabs OR straight up poor farmers and laborers.
There were big Hindu zamindars too and they gained more powers by the grace of the British policies but post independence the land ceiling Act broke their back and they realised quickly that to preserve their dignity and well being they had to change, get into professions, entrepreneurs, or perish. Some survived and some peeished penniless
What BS - in 1947 the large landlords and raja-maharajas right across North India, right across India in fact, were Hindus. Muslim rulers constituted only about 15% of rulers of Princely States. For eg in 1947 in EAST Punjab (ie that part from which large parts went to Pakistan) there were 8 Princely States - Patiala, Nabha, Faridkot, Jind, Malerkotla, Kapurthala, Nalagarh and Kalsia. Just ONE of the eight - Malerkotla - was ruled by a Muslim Nawab. Ditto RIGHT across Northern India (including UP, Bihar etc). In the East, from where I come from, in Bengal the situation was FAR worse. There were NO Muslim Nawabs of Princely States in Bengal and the ENTIRE East of India , and less than 5% of Zamindars here were Muslim (The 'Nawab' of Dhaka was the largest one, and there was daylight - and many Hindu zamindars - between him and the next largest Muslim Zamindar). RESEARCH before shooting your mouth off.
