Everybody I know, that's actually done hard time, has answered in a similar manner, when I've asked them this question. They say they don't consider it snitching. personally I think it's always best to remain silent when being questioned, but it's a viable defense or explanation for your lawyer to use. The only downside is that the family of the deceased might be upset and claim that you are tarnishing their loved ones reputation or memory.
