      I actually ran this bike on FMH and cleaned most everything accept for rider error. I (at the time mid 40s, 200lbs, A class rider) was going to use my then Husaberg FE501 but it was having engine trouble and went with the 230 I had brought along "just in case"... REALLY great choice. I have used this bike in unbelievably brutal trails rides and had a GREAT TIME. It's like a trials bike but with 100+ mile range. WAY under rated bike.

      @@TheNutzandBoltz Most sources peg this
      (KLX300R) between
      282 and 300lbs, wet, that I have found. Looks like the 2003
      was 253 +- wet, but then it only had kick start which
      defeats the entire basis of looking at KLX. Elect Start
      is not where I'd be looking to cut weight, if you want to be able to
      finish a C and above class hare scramble.

    These bikes are so underrated. They're absolutely bulletproof no matter what, and they make good power once you undo all the emissions crap. The only negative is the suspension but once that's fixed you've got yourself a machine

      wll1500, I upgraded my fork springs to something a bit stiffer. Although it helped, I was never truly happy with the front forks. The back shock I thought felt great. Other than that, it was a great motorcycle.

      What kind of a emission crap do you need to fix

    • @wll1500
      @wll1500 3 роки тому

      @@705_media5 the carb is tuned to California emmisions standards which severely leans out the tuning making it starve for power and hard to cold start. Additionally an intake restrictor is used and an exhaust baffle is in place from stock.
      Rejetting, adding a new needle with more positions, and removing those restrictors is the "uncorking" process for the 230 and 150f and offers a very healthy power increase.

    Great video. I just bought a new 230 as a play bike and ordered most of the upgrades from your website. I definitely need the fork springs! I have had a few friends that are short like me 5'7", and with some suspension and engine mods they race hare scrambles on them. My main bike is a 2016 YZ450FX, but it's heavy and even after setting the sag and changing the linkage I still can barely reach the ground. The 230 is fun and super reliable.

    I free rode and raced Mx, even a little bit of fmx for years. I then hung it up for a few years because frankly I fell out of love with it after so many injuries and surgeries. Risk vs reward just wasn’t tipping the scale towards staying in it. So I got into Harley’s just to cruise and soon after started stunting Harley’s lol. Anyways I wanted to get back into dirt biking, mainly trail riding. I bought a 2022 kx450f and obviously, that’s not the ideal trail bike for tech single track. Feels like handling a loaded gun while riding a bucking bull. Trying to tame that thing on tech trails was a handful. So I bought a crf230 and it may be one of the most fun motorcycles I have ever owned and I’m faster in the trails on the 230 than I’ve been on anything else.

    Nice Video! I have a 04 Crf150f witch is pretty much same as your bike just a bit smaller wheels, and has a kick starter. I have done almost all of the same upgrades that you guys have done, like opened airbox, new air filter, re- jetted, i'm actually getting a new fmf exhaust for it in a few days, new handle bars, graphics, seat cover ,etc. They sure are very tough bikes, very reliable and as you said they last forever. I'm glad mines an older version just because it has a kick starter and is a bit lighter than the newer ones with batteries. Hope to see more how- to videos for that bike in future! Cheers!

I'm going to have to get him a bigger bike. I thought about giving him mine and moving up to a CRF250X. For the style of riding we do here in WV I don't know if I want to spend the extra money. I might try the upgrades and just get him a 230 also. I don't ride as hard as i used to and have been fine with the 230. I do wish it didn't feel so heavy when catching a little air.

      I had this bike 12 years ago. I un corked the air box, uni air filter, full bbr exhaust, re-jet (main jet only) bbr rev box, lighter chain, went up 2 teeth in the rear with a lightweight sprocket and ran octain booster. After i did those mods that bike ripped, it was a fast bike. I used to woods race it. Some how the bike topped out at 71mph, think it was the rev box that helped with that. I beat the piss out of that bike and it never gave me a problem. But yeah, re jet it trust me. I don't remember the size i went with, do some research. A main jet is cheap and easy to change. Hope this helps!

    I’ve had a 230 since 2006, bought it new. Back then there was Reger Engineering where you could install the CR USD forks on a modified triple (their top clamp and CR lower, 230 stem, their stop and caliper hanger) and for the rear, a works connection shock with external reservoir. Yes, I have all that on mine, and the T4 exhaust opened up air box and re-jetted. Bike has survived 6 kids plus fat dad (and all their friends as it became the “loaner”) probably has over 400 hrs, one valve adjust, 1 battery, 1 carb clean, and probably 6 sets of tires it’s whole life. I think now it needs a cosmetic plastic face lift since some of them are held on with zip ties LOL. Does the plastics on the 15 share the same mounting, if not, what would it take to upgrade, or does anyone make an aftermarket kit?

    The claim of a 6.5 pound weight reduction with a lithium battery does not sound correct to me. If I recall correctly I saved 2 pounds with a Shorai lithium battery. I don't think the stock battery even weighs 6.5 pounds. That skid plate will reduce airflow under the engine, and the foam will reduce it even more. The lower engine cases are not very hot compared to other parts of the engine, but Honda does have a large hole in the front of their skid plate to increase airflow through that area.

    Thanks finally found a nice build for the 230 i'm 5'4 and weigh 125lb have 2016 crf230 just ordering some of those add ons.How tall is your girlfriend riding the bike and also is there a lowering kit for this bike .I'm right on my tip toes .
    Thanks!

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  6 років тому +1

      We did not put a lowering link on our bike. My wife is about 5'2 and just like you she's right on her tip toes while sitting on the bike. The height gave her a little bit of grief when she was first starting out, but now that she's getting better and more confident she is fine with the height. Tip toes is typically where you want the bike height and is a good height to develop into, but it's all about your personal preference and comfort. Unfortunately we don't carry any lowering links for this bike here at Rocky Mountain, but a quick google search shows that there are some out there! -Josh

    Question- Im a first time off road buyer. Been riding 1000cc street sport bikes for 15 years. I planned on getting the crf250x until i seen a review stating that the maintenance might cost any wear from 800 to 1000 per year. I really dont have time to be maintaining stuff. I live in MA and will be using it for trail riding. Maybe 20 to 30 hours a month. How is this compared to the X? Especially when it comes to maintenance? Thanks.

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  6 років тому

      *loueber-* I would recommend you check out our How-To videos we have for each bike. Each bike is going to have their maintenance costs, with different intervals on when to change fluids and inspect valves. The CRF250x will provide more of your race bike power, yet still being trail ready. The CRF230f will be a little more tame in power, but can chug everywhere on the trails. The 230f's are great trail bikes. The CRF250x is a little more versatile and you could ride it on the trails one day, then the motocross track the next. Hope these videos help.
