I have a CP33, and a PMR30, and the only issue I have had other than operator induced rim lock is a broken bolt hold open on the CP33. Kel Tec sent two replacements and a video on how to replace the part.
Thanks for putting this video out. I have had my Gen 2 for about 2 years now and never had any issues from cheap ammo to carry ammo. When I shoot indoors at 75 feet using iron sights, I'm pretty accurate dead center. The only thing I did was paint the front sight yellow to see it better for myself. It's a fun gun and I refuse to put a red dot on it. Keep up the great videos!
Thank you for posting this. I’ve been on the fence about a couple of these for backpack guns for my wife and I but was hesitant because of the different opinions about reliability. I’m a little more confident about them now. Thanks again 👍
To begin, Howard I applaud your methodology and I believe your results are meaningful. Now I have a confession. I won’t own any firearm designed, produced and supported by a manufacturer with a questionable reputation. For example, I won’t depend on a Taurus, despite the facts that (in recent years) their quality seems to be better and a good many individuals I respect have had no problems with their firearms. Further, I have placed Kel-Tec in roughly the same category. But that may be unfair and this Sub-2000 really seems to be a reliable and functional weapons . . . at a very affordable price. Aggregate reputations can be resorted, of course, but it takes considerable time and managerial effort to do so. Obviously, Remington is currently attempting to resurrect its once stellar stature, and Marlin/Ruger seems to be destined to do so.
I understand completely. I wanted nothing to do with Kel-Tec products for about 20 years after seeing how dismally some of their early pistols performed. Then, a few years ago, I decided to take a chance on a Gen-2 Sub2000. As I mentioned in the video, I've been quite impressed with it. The Gen-3 seems to be equally dependable and adequately accurate for my purposes. As always, thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!
I have a Kel-Tec P-11 9mm pistol that is OVER THIRTY YEARS OLD that still works perfectly---and I got it USED! I have put over 400 rounds of mostly HOT hollowpoints through and it has never failed in any way, EXCEPT with a cheapo aftermarket magazine full of cheapo weak BigMart bulk-box ammo ONE day. It is STILL very accurate and looks like new (stainless steel slide.) I am convinced that some big name manufacturers use paid ringers to submit fake bad reviews to YooooToooob to make cheaper-priced rivals LOOK BAD. I have SEEN a YouuuToooob reviewer deliberately test using light hollowpoints specifically forbidden by the Kel-Tec owner's manual, and then being SHOCKED and surprised that the .22 magnum pistol did not perform perfectly, just like the manual said it would not! It was embarrassing to see him PRETEND to look surprised and disturbed---he is not an actor! And there are many others, reviewers that you cannot trust, lying for money behind the scenes............................elsullo
Outstanding, coherent analysis. My wife and I are seniors with onset of arthritis. On the fence with the Kel Tec sub 2000. Biggest challenges for us might be racking the charging handle, felt recoil, and ease of disassembly. We’ve had to downgrade from comfortably shooting 9mm handguns to 380s. Very serious about having a reliable carbine in our home, however. Plus the price point is alluring. If you know of any seniors who have experience with this firearm, please share, preferably before November 5th. Thank you, young Sir! Look forward to more content from you.
I’m sorry. I don’t know anyone who can confirm your thoughts. I agree, charging the chamber might be an issue. If you can handle a Sub2000 in a store, try it for yourself. If possible, let me know how it goes.
An interesting and fun experiment. The Kel-Tec performed perfectly. In my experience, UTG makes a better product than the price would suggest. I have several UTG parts for a budget build AR15 and the quality doesn't disappoint.
I did some informal shooting with a retired armorer one day. We were trying out one another’s rifles (his were all way out of my price range so I was having fun), and I had him try out my gen2 s2k. He made a frowny face when he saw it, but 5 minutes later he had a big smile on his face. He was ringing that steel at random ranges using those cheap plastic peeps. I do like the g3 better though.
Great report on the sub 2 K. I am also a retired Police officer with 29 years of service and competed in action pistol competition for over 10 years. I have owned and fired many handguns and rifles as well as shotguns and I absolutely love my gen 2 sub 2 k. I sent mine off to Mcarbo and had them go through it. I also added the Kel Tec solid brass bolt and a rubber recoil pad. The trigger on mine is 4 pounds + - and smooth. I hear a lot of people knocking the sub 2 K but they obviously haven't owned one either. My carbine runs 100% and I shoot mostly handloaded 147 grain rounds at 1050 fps. Yes the additions provided by Mcarbo made it much more shooter friendly but many of these carbines are running in stock form and doing so without a hitch. I never fold mine as it is strictly for home defense and a truck gun. Thanks again for a very good report on the ammo issue.
My 9mm gen 3 is having failure to feed (usually after the 3rd round), using the mag it came with. Sent it to Kel-Tec and they sent it right back saying there was nothing wrong with it, also noticed when I put a g17 mag in it, it will be able to jam to far up causing the bolt to hit the top of the mag. Also have ran different brands of ammo (only brass) Let me know what you guys think!
I would try to record yourself firing it with the failures and email that to KelTec letting them know the situation (how youve already sent it in and its not fixed).
Yup. Run the gen 2 9mm. with Glock mags, and Amend 2 thirty three round mags. Various ammunition zero malfunctions. Reliable, American made. Affordable, and ya gotta love the portability of the fold. 😊
My gen 2 with most of mcarbo upgrades has been super reliable. I have not shot it in maybe more than a year but it’s my trunk gun/ anti mob gun . Or my staying a hotel and I won’t more fire power that’s easier to shoot than pistol set up
Two things Chief , the first you should try my friend the in barrel laser for sight adjustment. I set my sights at home before going to the range. It works great. The second is kinda just strange or weird off the wall information but here goes. That was the same model gun used in the Highland park mass shooting. I'm glad it's in the hands of good.
No forgetting eye protection for me. I'm left handed and my Sub gen 2 would spray me in the face after every shot. That plus all the plastic caused me to sell it. When I disassembled it I couldn't believe I was looking at a plastic feed ramp.
@hrfunk it did, but for how long is the question. If you go the MCARBO route you're basically rebuilding it to an acceptable standard. Right down to the screw posts. Rather than all that, I sold it and went down the M&P FPC path.

i know what you mean, everyone expects a torture test it seems but i am against torture tests because when weapon is made ready for defense use wich will only be a few seconds in a defense incident it will be already clean, have lube and a cold barrel, a tourture test deprives weapon of cleaning, lube and cold barrel by over heating it, wich doesnt prove anything for the context of usage wich is not a battle field of constant fire but a personal defense application. we dont torture test our vehicles pulling the oil plug and putting brick on gas pedal to prove to someone how reliable our vehicle is and same with guns in those crazy tourture tests prove nothing because we are not going to use guns in the method they torture them. short simulated defense drills are good enough for testing a gun that has been cleaned, lubed and a cold barrel, this is how a gun is going to enter a defense situation, your not going to melt your barrel and start it on fire in any gun fight, if so it means we are not hitting the target if we need 1000 rounds of non stop firing, so torture tests make no sense for most firearms we are using in the context of short defense situations as private citizen
Well said. The same thing applies to torture tests of optics. If I devise some wildly unrealistic test and manage to destroy an optic, the only thing I have proven is that it can be broken. The same might be said of virtually anything constructed by human beings.
