It just released in the last week, but Valdrin's new album is the best black metal album of the year to me. They upped the melodic and proggy elements from their previous release and it blew me away.

1. Panopticon - The Rime of Memory 2. Periphery - Periphery V: Djent is not a Genre 3. Cattle Decapitation - Terrasite 4. TesseracT - War of Beings 5. Haken - Fauna The Rime of Memory isn't out yet, but there was a listening party on Bandcamp, and my vinyl came five days early, so I've listened to it five times in the last two days, and it's incredible. Definitely my favorite Panopticon album. The atmosphere is incredible, thanks to the heavy production. An Autumn Storm is one of two Panopticon songs to give me chills (the first being Dead Loons). I'm honestly shocked because Periphery V was going to be my album of the year, and it wasn't even close, but Panopticon stole that title at the last minute. P5 is the only album that has stayed in my rotation the entire year, every other album fell out of rotation after a month. According to last.fm, I've listened to every track 80+ times, with the highest being Wildfire at 134 plays, not counting the vinyl/cd plays, so yeah, I'm still obsessed with it. Wildfire is my song of the year. Terrasite is awesome, I admit Death Atlas was a bit of a disappointment, but Terrasite fixed all of my problems, and is up there with Anthropocene and Monolith as some of their best albums, maybe even their best one, time will tell. I've never got the hype for TesseracT, I mean, I liked all of their albums, but nothing amazed me. But I think I finally get the hype now that War of Beings is out, it's incredible. The vocalist has lots of powerful sections which really elevate it. As for Haken, their first four albums are masterpieces, but Vector was a step-down, and I still can't get into Virus at all three years later. But Fauna felt like a return to form, Virus had almost no weird, quirky moments, which are the moments that made me love the band in the first place (their first four are so quirky). Luckily Fauna brought back the weird moments for one of their quirkiest albums yet. Lots of great songs, it's also full of ear-candy moments.
I actually like Chaos Horrific a bit more than Violence Unimagined. I think both are outstanding though. BTW, Erik Rutan is listed on both as lead guitar. Not just Chaos Horrific. The stuff with Pat O'Brien occurred in late 2018, and thus he was out of the band in 2019 with Erik replacing him as a touring musician and he also did production. Nice list! \m/ \m/

This year was all over the place for me. I think metal wasn't even my most played genre this year O_o. But here are my top 5 most played albums within the genre 1. sukekiyo - EROSIO [I debated with myself whether it's metal or not. I'm still not sure but who cares anyway] 2. Ahab - The Choral Tomb [doesn't get boring even after over 60 playthroughs ^^'] 3. Hanging Garden - The Garden [best album for early bus drives and nice to fall asleep to but also one that is wonderful for long walks] 4. Ne Obliviscaris - Excul [my first introduction to Ne Obliviscaris. Caused me to dive into their entire discography.] 5. Anthem - Crimson & Jet Black [just the catchyness. Love their entire discography but this one is extra fun :) I probably have a similar relation to them as you have with In Flames] I'll take the month of December to listen through all the albums on your list I haven't heard yet. I haven't listened to In Flames since Sounds of a Playground Fading. And I liked that album but I didn't love it. They were my favorite band for years so I'm kind of anxious about listening to a new album by them but it's going to happen now.

It just released in the last week, but Valdrin's new album is the best black metal album of the year to me. They upped the melodic and proggy elements from their previous release and it blew me away.

The Rime of Memory isn't out yet, but there was a listening party on Bandcamp, and my vinyl came five days early, so I've listened to it five times in the last two days, and it's incredible. Definitely my favorite Panopticon album. The atmosphere is incredible, thanks to the heavy production. An Autumn Storm is one of two Panopticon songs to give me chills (the first being Dead Loons). I'm honestly shocked because Periphery V was going to be my album of the year, and it wasn't even close, but Panopticon stole that title at the last minute. P5 is the only album that has stayed in my rotation the entire year, every other album fell out of rotation after a month. According to last.fm, I've listened to every track 80+ times, with the highest being Wildfire at 134 plays, not counting the vinyl/cd plays, so yeah, I'm still obsessed with it. Wildfire is my song of the year. Terrasite is awesome, I admit Death Atlas was a bit of a disappointment, but Terrasite fixed all of my problems, and is up there with Anthropocene and Monolith as some of their best albums, maybe even their best one, time will tell. I've never got the hype for TesseracT, I mean, I liked all of their albums, but nothing amazed me. But I think I finally get the hype now that War of Beings is out, it's incredible. The vocalist has lots of powerful sections which really elevate it. As for Haken, their first four albums are masterpieces, but Vector was a step-down, and I still can't get into Virus at all three years later. But Fauna felt like a return to form, Virus had almost no weird, quirky moments, which are the moments that made me love the band in the first place (their first four are so quirky). Luckily Fauna brought back the weird moments for one of their quirkiest albums yet. Lots of great songs, it's also full of ear-candy moments.
I actually like Chaos Horrific a bit more than Violence Unimagined. I think both are outstanding though. BTW, Erik Rutan is listed on both as lead guitar. Not just Chaos Horrific. The stuff with Pat O'Brien occurred in late 2018, and thus he was out of the band in 2019 with Erik replacing him as a touring musician and he also did production. Nice list! \m/ \m/
