  • Bonus video, as I review the Hornby Pug - both the Caledonian Railway (R2672) and the Smokey Joe (R782) versions. My plans are to detail one or both of these locomotives, so stay tuned!
The Caledonian Railway ordered a number of these 0-4-0 engines, built by Nielsen & Co and designed by Dugald Drummond. Later examples were built at the Caledonian's St. Rollow works.
These small shunters remained in long service under the LMS (who gave all Neilson saddle locomotives the power class 0F, shared by many other types) and British Railways, with the last of the class withdrawn in 1962. The two classes, sometimes referred to by the generic term "pugs", were mainly used as works shunters in the area around Glasgow, Scotland, often running with home-made tenders to improve their small coal capacity. Like most 0-4-0 tanks of the period they had outside cylinders and inside slide valves driven by Stephenson valve gear. A number were later sold into private industry and several even made it as far south as Crewe where they acted as works shunters in British Railways days. None have survived into preservation.
They are easily confused with the earlier 1882-built ex-North British Railway Class Y-9 (NBR Class G), also designed by Dugald Drummond to a similar saddle tank design, although the 264/611 are distinguished by a taller chimney and larger circular windows. Both were originally commissioned from Drummond by Neilson & Co to a standard design and were used by North British, LNER and British Railways.

    Hello John,
Thank you very much for this nice information video, I enjoyed by watching it.
May I ask you, do these nicely saddle tank locos have a NEM 362 coupling shaft equipped onto the loco frame?
I ask this, because I use for myself kadee compatible knuckle couplers with
    NEM 362 shafts mostly.
Me I am modelling a fictional private roadname based in northern germany in the period of time when germany was an imperial monarchy under regency of Kaiser Wilhelm 2nd the 1rst grand son of Queen Victoria.
One of these 0-4-0T saddle tank locos found its way to a prussian railway painted in green and black, I really don't know the origin british class of the loco, but I have seen photos of such loco.
A small private owner company bought such saddle tank loco from great britain.

They do have NEM pockets, so you could change out the tension lock coupling (that is standard in the UK)

Yes, it can be pot luck on eBay, but I think I've been fairly lucky and these will be ideal for the detailing project I have in mind. Watch out for the follow-up video.
