Interesting discovery of an old site metal detecting in the forest

- Out metal detecting and exploring the deserted farmlands of New England where it is now all overgrown forest I stumbled upon an interesting place today. I just happened to cross over a rock wall from the colonial days and was swinging my Fisher F19 when all of a sudden the ground was giving me lots of iron signals.....nails. That is almost certainly the sign of a structure being here a long time ago. Well I started digging around and as usual there was a lot of trash but them BAM ! I dug up a 1700s Tombac button. That was unexpected and a big woo. So I dug in a bit more to see what we were dealing with for nails and they were old square nails. As well there were the remains of old bricks. No doubt this is the spot of an old home site from hundreds of years ago. If you want to find old places to metal detect you have to do a lot of exploring and read the landscape as you go. I am pretty sure this is a colonial NH site and I shall return to see what else we can find.

The bent square nail was done on purpose, they call it clinching or clenching. Makes for a stronger joint.
