We are lucky to have great folks like you here on you tube. The info on these guns you have give us is very much appreciated. I just got my new Tennessee rifle from TVM Muzzle loaders looking to get the Southern rifle from Kiblers. Thank you for all the help.
Beautiful rifle can’t wait to get mine! I ordered a 36. I have some other flintlock rifles Pennsylvania styles was wondering why many of the Southern Rifles are built using the smaller caliber. As time goes by they seem to get heavier. Those smaller cal flintlocks must be a joy to shoot being so slender. Despite knowing better I’m thinking I’ll let my wife try it; motive behind that there may be an opportunity for another.
Excellent Video , I just got some ideas for mine , I really like the engraving on the lock and the markings on the end of the Barrel . Everything done on the Rifle looks great and thanks for the explanation of the feather . Great job , hope your Capel tunnel is all better by now .👍 Thank you .
Well sir after watching this video a few times i ordered one in a 32cal, I've never had a flintlock never even shouldered one but u and your new shooter videos have been so helpful i can't thank you enough, my dad shoots benchrest and smallbore 3P so i had a gun in my hands since I was little just never a black powder fan, it took an ammo shortage to make me fall in love with these beautiful rifels i wish i would've a long time ago thanks again for all your work on these videos and all the knowledge you've shared
Very cool HB. Glad to hear the videos have been helpful. The reason I started the channel was exactly because a guy like you wouldn’t have a source for how to go about shooting these guns. If you have any questions along the way just ask. Thanks and enjoy. You made a great choice in the .32 SMR. Just an extra bit of info, if you want you can do what I did and buy an extra barrel in, say, .45 cal and swap it out in just a few minutes giving you two guns in one. 👍🏻
@@BlackPowderTV Love the looks of your Kibler SMR . I have one coming in .40 in the next week or so. I've a question about the finish. All wood is different, I know, but how did you get the light almost honey color with the black end grain contrast using aqua fortis? So beautiful. It seems to usually turn out more of a shade of red from what I've seen. Thanks!
That is one beautiful Rifle and the engraving is an extra nice touch especially the way you chose to honor God! My hat's off to all invovled from beginning to end! Thank you for sharing this with us! Jesus is Lord!
Mr.Bob i hope your health is still improving i haven't heard from you since your last video, i finally got my kibler rifle finished a week ago it took 11 months to be sent out and it was destroyed in a crash by our mail lady, but kibler sent me another one and I had a gunsmith finish it do to my lack of home time. I hope you are doing well and are about ready to start making more videos you have been so much help to me words can't express my gratitude
Mine will be here in two weeks!😃👏👏👍👍🇺🇸. That’s a awesome rifle you have! Mine won’t be that fancy but I’ll still be very happy 😃! Thanks for sharing all the tips and pictures! 😃👏👏👍👍🇺🇸😇🙏!
Ricky Burton Awesome! I built mine as a wall hanger but if it was going to be a regular shooter it wouldn’t have been as fancy. Walnut would’ve been a better choice for a Southern gun but I love it anyway! Enjoy it! 🇺🇸
I had carpal tunnel release surgery on both hands about a month apart. That was about 15 years ago. It made a world of difference and to this day, I have no issues. Best of luck with your surgery results. Thanks for the video.
I know it's been awhile, how are you doing health wise? I have always loved how you explained things to help other spinners do a good job. You are very informative and down to earth. Take care my friend!
Thanks for the kind words brother. I’m doing great. No return of the Cancer so it looks like we’re home free. Doing other things (such as brushing up on my guitar) and still looking at coming back to the channel before too long. Hope to see you there. Thanks again. 👍🏻
Thanks for the story of your rifle. I have long been wanting a flintlock squirrel rifle. After looking around the market a bit, I was convinced after seeing your gun. Just ordered Kibler's Southern Mountain rifle in .36 caliber with the xfancy maple. Planning to brown the barrel. Thanks again.
I just subscribed. i am in SC, I have been thinking about doing some videos myself. I have been into BP since about 1973 I have been handloading since 1967 at age 10, oh I have a lot of sickness! I have a 40cal. southern rifle built by Kevin Blevins of NC. it is beautiful! and A 62CAL. jaeger I built. I am going to get a southern rifle kit from kibler. I found your video on the American long rifle forum.
OLSKOOL Awesome! Thanks for commenting and subscribing! There are very few of us doing BP videos so if you decide to let me know and I’ll subscribe! Kevin does great work. I have several of his pieces. No guns but several horns and other accoutrements. Thanks again!
Nice rifle! I like your custom additions to your rifle. I’m having gun builder Mike Brooks build me a Southern .32 caliber rifle with a 46” Rice barrel with iron hardware. He wants to outfit it with a swivel wooden patch box. I look forward to more videos from you, take care.
J Blocker Thanks! I love Mikes work! The bottom rifle on my rack behind me in the video is a Mike Brooks English Sporting rifle! #350. You’re in good hands!
Thanks! Feather holes were normally seen on Southern guns, post 1800 but were used here and there for some time prior to that date. I appreciate it, and thanks for watching!
A wonderful longrifle, congratulations ! And a nice video about it, thank you. I saw that they can ship these kit to my country, interesting ;) Regards from France.
Black Powder TV Yeap, I should think about it 😉👍 Those long rifles are soooo elegant. Here, we can find and buy some Black Powder rifle kits, but not one of this kind. It could be a nice project to work on a fine american flintlock. I’ve never seen one of them on our range. Thanks again and be well. 😉
I love mine also. Jim will also build one "in the white" if you want one are not ready for a kit, comes fully built and ready to shoot you just do a tiny bit of sanding, stain the stock and do what ever you want (if anything to the barrel) and you are ready to go. I was lucky enough to have Jim completely make and finish mine. it is our family "heirloom" rifle to be passed along from generation to generation. if you are ready for a fine flintlock without huge cost but want the finest material look at these.
Great video.I want build one but I would really want to lock it up in my safe. Most safes will only go 57" inside height. Wish Jim would make a kit with a little shorter barrel. I'm actually thinking about a Pedersoli kit just for the difference in overall length.
I either use Laurel Mountain Forge Browning solution or a Fast Bluing and rub it back to grey each application with maroon scotchbrite until it gets to where I like the look. You can also use something like Kibler’s Longrifles brass black but it’s not as tough a patina. 👍🏻 If you use the browning solution you can let it go longer each application to get slight pitting. I used the LMF browning on this gun.
Thank you for taking the time to share this overview with us. You sure have a beautiful rifle sir & Kibler certainly produces an excellent quality product. Take care & be well.
I’d really like to get into making one of Kiblers kits. I love the look of the Southern gun. Don’t do hunting, but if I were to, would the 45cal be enough? Not interested in a squirrel gun, but do love target shooting…
Couple of questions. 1) I’ve seen the video on shooting a southern rifle about where you place the buttstock. Is it still comfortable to shoot and would a larger caliber, says 50 still be comfortable with the stock held against the top of the bicep? 2) any idea the gun maker’s philosophy on using this design? Thanks
The buttplate was designed that way because a certain type of European offhand competition was popular in the south pre Civil War and the stance that went with that style was crossbody which is difficult to mount on your shoulder. It is a very stable way to shoot smaller caliber offhand which was ideal for the small game hunting that was a staple in the south. This type of buttplate and shooting was also popular in Ohio and Kentucky as can be seen in their buttplate styles in the period. .50 cal is the largest caliber I’d want to shoot this way. .45 is fine, .32-40 is perfect. Something like .58 would likely hurt.
Hey Bob. Just wanted to say thanks for putting up such an awesome channel! We NEED more BP shooters. I am planning on purchasing one of the Kibbler kits shortly. Glad to hear the build wasn't too difficult. I have seen quite a few these completed and they are sure beautiful rifles. Also, I was an 0331 as well. 2005-10. Look forward to more of your videos! -Shaun
Shaun Kelso Thanks Shaun! I appreciate it! It was really easy and if you don’t plan to add anything beyond what Jim provides they take no time at all to finish. 89-92. Semper Fi!
All of my rifles are bigger bore (58-62), thinking I need something a bit smaller now, but large enough I can still use it for deer if I want. Been looking at the Kibler SMR, just trying to decide between 40 or 45. Hope you are doing well.
Matthew Visser Hey Matthew, great idea. I’ll add it to m upcoming how to series. They are basically plate bronze or brass wrapped around a wood dowel. They pressure fit on the barrel. Thanks!
@@BlackPowderTV thanks so much! BTW I just wanted to compliment you. I really enjoy your videos along with your knowledge helps me out alot. ✊ Stay Well and Safe!
Thanks for the video. As I said before beautiful rifle. The gray finish on the barrel and iron is a perfect fit on thar smr. I have watched all of kibler's videos he is a genius at his kit design and they are quality parts. Have you messed with his in house locks?
John Cooper Hey John. Thanks again. Yes I did a video last week on his Round Faced CNCd lock. It is a really large jump in quality from what’s been available. I bought one for my next build. Sparks like crazy...
Hello I am working on a KIBLER SMR in .45 caliber. May I ask what tool you used to make the groove in the cheek rest. The hole for the feather is interesting. Could You tell me what size hole is in the silver feather hole plate? Did you neutralize the aqua fortis before applying the oil finish? Thanks and God Bless. Tim
Timbotide Hey Tim! I used a tiny triangle file to do the lines in the cheek rest after marking them with a straight edge and pencil. I sometimes use a hacksaw blade for a more squared groove. It depend on what you want. Test how they look on a scrap. Start at an edge and work your way across to minimize skipping with the file. The feather hole plate is drilled 3/32” and about 1/2” deep into the wood. I would normally neutralize with ammonia but didn’t this time around as I wanted it to darken over time to add to the patina. God Bless! By the way, I bought a .45 barrel for it as well so it will have interchangeable barrels.
@@BlackPowderTV are the barrels not pinned in, making the holes bigger over time as you tap and retap the pins in/out? Is it easy to just switch the barrels out? If so this may be the route I go!
The barrels are pinned and you can wallow them out if you are hamfisted but just being careful can give you a hundred years of the same size pin holes. 👍🏻
Love the video Mr McBride, and the gun is beautiful. Thanks for honoring our Savior in this video. Don't hear much from you lately. I hope your health is improved. Allen Jones
Absolutely beautiful rifle. You mentioned the finish on the stock, but what kind of finish is on the iron/silver? I didn't hear any information on that. It looks like it's just natural tarnish/patina.
Mark Taylor Thanks! Sorry, I forgot all about the metal finish as the video went long. It’s darker in real life than it looks under the studio lights. I finished the iron with Laurel Mountain Forge Browning solution until it pitted and rubbed back to a French Grey with maroon Scotchbrite and the Silver with Sulfur!
They work very well, especially at an uncovered range when you get a glare on the front blade and on a squirrel gun when most of my shots are more vertical and the glare will be different each shot. It’s not a huge difference but my groups are tighter on a sunny day in those scenarios. 👍🏻
Is the nose cap pewter? I couldn’t quite tell. I know that Jim says that there aren’t any nose caps on the market that he recommends for the SMR kit. I want a nose cap on mine when I put it together but don’t know what to do
It’s made from mild steel sheet from Lowes. There is very little wood up there. I used 22g if I remember right. There are instructional videos in the tutorial section of the ALR forum. Not too hard. 👍🏻
Wow that thing is beautiful. As a guy that’s never built a kit and is of average mechanical skill, would you say that kit would be something the average guy could do? Makes me nervous to drop a grand and possibly be disappointed haha. Always wanted a beautiful rifle like that though. Really enjoying this channel!
Russell Brill Thanks! It took me 50 hours or so to finish mine. Lots of small stuff. Go to the American Longrifles Forum and share some pics when you finish it!
Bob, Awesome!! Really liking the channel a lot. I’ve got an SMR coming after Christmas sometime. There’s like a 2-3 month waiting period. Really digging your rifle. I picked up a side plate and banana style Patchbox for it BUT I don’t like the release button it can with. Was thinking about having one made, you mentioned the fellow who made your patchbox. Think he would make a release button for me? Thanks again and be safe Duca
A bit late to the party... Thank you for your walk through of this rifle. Was considering it for a squirrel gun. Your touches to the gun make it something real special. So... How did you finish/age the barrel and other steel parts? The aged patina on them is a finishing goal of mine.
@@BlackPowderTV I’ve had my Tennessee Valley Muzzleloader Poor Boy since 2002 and had named her Sweet Beulah an would like to have Isaiah 64:4-5 on mine after seeing what you did. Thank for the inspiration an God Bless.
bavariasuhl A fellow I met at the Alabama Rifle Show. I’d have to get into my records for his name but they are basically 16 gauge copper plate rolled over an Oak dowel.
@@BlackPowderTV they are amazing I've never seen shades like that on a long rifle either do they work well? How much do they affect your sight picture?
@@zacklothamer9533 Hey Zack, they work very well in the bright sunlight. What's nice about them is since they are press fit i can put them on and take them off as needed. It shades and silhouettes my front sight nicely. No down side, but I do pop them off if it's not too bright.
The slim lines on that longrifle are perfection. THANKS for the view!
As a Tennessean, I NEED one of these so bad. This thing is a beaut

@@BlackPowderTV Thanks. It looks great. I've been contemplating a rifle build, but just not sure how much I can handle.
Mark Taylor The Kibler is by far the easiest kit to finish. Not even close.
@@BlackPowderTV Thanks. I'd rather start with something I know I can finish.
That is one very pretty rifle..... Do those sight shades make a difference? I would imagine if the light was from one side it would be useful....
They work very well, especially at an uncovered range when you get a glare on the front blade and on a squirrel gun when most of my shots are more vertical and the glare will be different each shot. It’s not a huge difference but my groups are tighter on a sunny day in those scenarios. 👍🏻
Beautiful rifle
Thanks HB! I love it too!
Absolutely beautiful
Is the nose cap pewter? I couldn’t quite tell. I know that Jim says that there aren’t any nose caps on the market that he recommends for the SMR kit. I want a nose cap on mine when I put it together but don’t know what to do
It’s made from mild steel sheet from Lowes. There is very little wood up there. I used 22g if I remember right. There are instructional videos in the tutorial section of the ALR forum. Not too hard. 👍🏻
Excellent! Thank you! You sure did a nice job on this rifle. I have watched this video about a hundred times since I ordered my kit from Mr. Kibler 😅.
Beautiful rifle well made an assembly
I really like lid on your patch box l have his gun in a 40 cal if I ever get it done I did do mine in brass and walnut stock. It look it hurts
Russell Brill Thanks! It took me 50 hours or so to finish mine. Lots of small stuff. Go to the American Longrifles Forum and share some pics when you finish it!
hey there Bob how did you go about finishing your steel parts and barrel on this rifle?
That is Gorgeous
nice channel and thanks for taking requests
bavariasuhl You bet! Thank you!
OMG that is a sweet rifle and heirloom. Love the Christian touches.
Thanks Hassan!
Fantastic information, especially the use of a feather quill to keep moisture out.
Will you be going to the NC Territorials?
I don’t think so but I may try to make it this year as many of the shows I’d normally hit have been cancelled.
Thanks again and be safe

Pm sent on ALR. 👍🏻
A bit late to the party... Thank you for your walk through of this rifle. Was considering it for a squirrel gun. Your touches to the gun make it something real special. So... How did you finish/age the barrel and other steel parts? The aged patina on them is a finishing goal of mine.
Very beautiful looking rifle, I was going to get a wood runner, they don't export bugger.
Beautiful rifle, not huge on the patch box, but still beautiful.
I believe Kibler has different grades of the maple stock. Which grade is your rifle? Nice gun
I didn't really order it by grade. I just asked Katherine to find me something good. She found the really nice flame curl on my SMR. Thanks!
Kibler kits are great
I really like the scripture on the patch box . I would like to get one engraved on mine that is truly an awesome rifle.
Thanks William! I had Jim Parker of Calvary Longrifles Do the patchbox for me. I love it too!
@@BlackPowderTV I’ve had my Tennessee Valley Muzzleloader Poor Boy since 2002 and had named her Sweet Beulah an would like to have Isaiah 64:4-5 on mine after seeing what you did. Thank for the inspiration an God Bless.
who made your sun shades. never seen them before
bavariasuhl A fellow I met at the Alabama Rifle Show.
