Sincerely, this is the best UA-cam presentation I ever had on qualitative research. This is very informative, easy to learn for a beginner. It has really assisted me to better understand the qualitative study. Thank you so much, Phil Adu.
You are making a lot of sense. This video allows me to pause and skip back to listen again and I'm happy to be able to do that. I'm attempting to complete this final course, for my degree, from a distance. My Uni is not keeping in touch. I submit work and get no feedback. So here I am trudging on and am so happy to have found this lecture. So Dr. Adu Let's do this!
This presentation is so so well structured, clear and well understood. I was so confused with my research design until I listened to this presentation. Weil done, sir.
Thank you so much for sharing this. This is the most helpful video i have seen on UA-cam. So well explained, I like the patience you gave in explaining and didnt rush through it. Thank you!
Thank you so much, Sir! It was a struggle to understand how to approach the methodology chapter in the thesis until I have seen your presentation! Excellent work! God bless you!
NCDE, thank you very much for the presentations. Am about to start data analysis. I find the video on Coding and Categorizing Data by Philip Adu, Ph.D very enlightening
bro thank u so effin much this really the best presentation to be found on the web..i dnt know why it wasnt the first of suggestions ...i watched too many videos and ddnt understand a thing, but this one is so calm and clear thank you for your effort and time
You're welcome bro! Thank you for your kind words! Also, my new book, 'A Step-by-Step Guide to Qualitative Data Coding' would be very helpful to you. www.routledge.com/A-Step-by-Step-Guide-to-Qualitative-Data-Coding/Adu/p/book/9781138486874
Though this was a year ago, I have to say that I am happy to have found it. If you are still answering questions... I am now working on my qualitative research proposal and I am moving at a snail's pace because I'm not too sure of what I am to do. Is there any information you have that speaks to the proposal phase of the research paper?
Thank you for your amazing presentation. I am a doctoral student at the University of Texas at Austin and my research topic is Campus Carry. My only research question is: Given their historic marginalization in Texas, how do faculty of color at a Texas HBCU make sense of the intersections of campus carry and racial tensions? I planned to take a phenomenology approach. Now, I am wondering if that will work best and if I should change to a case study or something else. What is your advice? I am taking my last class this semester and I am working on chapter three now. I appreciate your support. Thank you, Syneetra
clear and precise presentation. Thank you very much! I didn't notice that there is sampling in qualitative research because we use sampling to generalize for the population. I think generalization is more of quantitative approach. I wonder if you clarify this. Thank you again!
This is very useful. I would be really grateful if the three stances could be clarified for me and it would also help if I could be advised whether I am correct to think that all studies contain all three of these stances. We know some reality. We then delve in to literature to study knowledge and based on our values and beliefs we identify our gaps and conduct our study.
Yes, you could view it that way! All studies are informed by philosophical paradigms and their associated assumptions or stance. In some studies, the paradigm and assumptions are explicit (meaning the researcher describes the underlying philosophical paradigm including assumptions that informs the methodology (research design) of the study). This is mostly done in qualitative studies. For quantitative studies, the researcher, most of the time, makes the paradigm implicit. You’re right! Our background, beliefs, and the paradigm we allied with could influence how we examine knowledge in the literature, identify a gap, and conduct research to fill the gap. Thanks Lakshi! Philip
Thanks once again, it will also be more useful, if a link to a published qualitative study that reported the presented methodologies was shared. This is to see how it is practically reported in the published articles.

Thank you, Dr. Adu for this very useful information. I'm working on transitional experiences of newly qualified nurses from classroom to practice. Research questions are related to the participants's expectations, challenges and available support systems during their transition. I have decided on a phenomenological qualitative design but the type of phenomenology is my problem now. Kindly help me out.
Thank for sharing this lecture. While I understand how to structure the chapter, I can't seem to find a source to refer to when defining how I chose my paradigm, what is the most relavant source of your lesson?

It's hard for me to differentiate between purposive and criterion sampling based on the explanation in the video. I've noticed that sources that mention purposive sampling don't mention criterion sampling (and vice versa). Could you explain the difference and where I can find a good source for distinguishing between the two? For example, in my study I specifically am seeking students who are neither high nor low achievers and are from a middle class background. I explain my rationale for doing this and use sources where appropriate, but I need to know the appropriate classification. Thanks!
When it comes to grounded approach, you could work within the following three main assumptions: 1. There are multiple realities 2. Participants' background can influence their views 3. knowledge generated is context bound Also, this presentation on grounded theory would help: www.slideshare.net/kontorphilip/using-grounded-theory-approach-from-start-to-finish
I am concluding that homogeneous sampling and criterion sampling are the same or highly similar. If your criterion is that respondents should have a mental health disorder doesn't selecting them qualify that as homogeneous sampling since they have similar experience i.e mental health?
hello I am enjoying this presentation very much. Here is my question. Is it possible or should I say sensible to use a phenomenological- narrative approach from a functionalistic perspective?
Did you say in chapter 3 you state the research question? What happens to the research questions in chapter one? I will need some clarification and the rational for this.
As you may know, the essence of writing chapter 3 (at the dissertation proposal level) is to tell readers about specific methodology related decisions and actions we would take in the study. Also, since research questions normally influence the selection of a research approach, participants for the study and data collection and analysis strategies, it is important to remind readers about the questions we plan to address. Lastly, the essence of restating the research questions is to help organize the description of their rationale - explaining to readers the reasons why it is important to address the questions. I hope this helps!

Very good presentation, informative and easy to follow / understand. This it is a powerful resource for me as a researcher.
I thought I could spend just 10 mins to flip through but I ended up going through the entire details happily. Detailed but worth the time. Thank you.
You're welcome!!
I am so happy to have come across your videos. They are the best videos on UA-cam!
Yes, you are making sense. I have to listen closely, but you're helping me understand more clearly than that of my lecturers at Queen's University.
I am so happy to have come across your videos. Thanks Philip!
This is right on point and very useful. I now have a clear strategy to continue with my PhD methodology chapter. Thank you so much!
