My Great Grandmother was a french colonizer in Indochina, she passed this last February. She used to tell us stories about her time in Vietnam, and her comical hatred of french people. I really miss you Grabby.
According to an old story, when the US asked the British to join with the Australians and NZ in sending troops to Vietnam, the Brits refused. The Pentagon said that Vietnam was strategically important. The British reply was that if Vietnam was strategically important we wouldn't have let the French grab it.
Thanks for the history lesson.
Yeah, US was believed in Domino theory and too afraid of the Red. That the only reason why they went in Vietnam.
@Florian Cravic ya, maybe
Yeah the Britain are smarter, they picked HongKong and Singapore instead, both are important habor
Thats because its a lie, the Vietnamese war was because of the Catholic church, thats the only reason
Napoleon III: "I hope that the newly acquired colony of Vietnam will bring prosperity for the future."

L'Indochine, pas prospère ? Laisse-moi rire... je pourrais te citer cent anecdotes, qui te prouveront que l'Indochine était d'une prospérité sans équivalent en Asie ( même le Raj britannique ne l'était pas autant ).

French ran the "Regie de l'Opium" which was established as soon as French occupied Vietnam in 19th Century. The "Regie de l'Opium" established French monopoly on opium trade all over Indochina. The Opium refinery was established in Saigon. Opium taxes accounted for up to 30% of Indochina Budget. It was only in 1946 that French "Regie de l'Opium" was closed after the UN and he US put France under pressure: Marshal Plan aid would only be provided to France once the Opium trade would be stopped in her colonies. In 1947, the French converted the 2,000 Opium dens in "De-intoxication Clinics". After 1947, Opium Trade went under-ground and was controlled by French Service secrets in connection with Mafia Corsican gangs. After French defeat at Dien Bien Phu and French departure from Indochina, the profitable Opium/Narcotic trade was redirected to the US using the infrastructure established in Indochina: this led to the "French Connection", where gang members were former French secret service (SDECE) operatives.

Interesting information. Where can I get more information about this?
Thank you for sharing.
zephira994
Karnow in his book on the history of Vietnam wrote, “The French colonial administration organized the opium traffic in order to raise revenues, and the operation was highly successful.” He also wrote that “Paul Doumer, the French governor-general of Indochina around the turn of the century, put the possession on a paying basis by exploiting its resources.” I guess the French couldn’t make enough money so they got into the drug trade. These French were our allies in WWI and WWII. French actions in Vietnam and other of its colonies gives credence to Germany’s loathing of the French. If one judges France by its international actions one has to conclude that it was a run by greedy and ruthless people.
@@bobbybobby3232 CIA was heavily involved as well... Ironically when the war ended the opium business ended as well.
Thank you for sharing such a nice story
I know that most of the western countries are pure evil
Especially toward non European
There is a very good book in French (this is a simplified version of a 1992 PhD Dissertation): "Quand l'opium finançait la colonisation en Indochine: L'élaboration de la régie générale de l'opium, 1860 à 1914". Her author is Chantal Descours-Gatin wrote the book with her PhD material. Her book details the way the French turned local population into addicts to acquire land and distribute it to the French settlers. There were 2 French monopolies, Regie de l'opium and monopoly on alcohol (private monopoly granted by the French administration to Fontane company). French practiced forced alcohol selling, Vietnamese members, families of each administrative unit had to buy a certified amount of alcohol, if the quota of purchase was not reached, Vietnamese had to pay fines, if the fines cannot be paid, the French confiscated the land. The alcohol monopoly was the other way to confiscate land. All these rules were imposed to whole Indochina: Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia. The French established "indigenous" passports, without these passport natives could no even travel in their own countries: these passports were established in all French colonies in Asia and Africa. The German got their examples from the colonial powers who abused non-European people in their respective colonies.Indochina was called the "Perl of the empire" because of exploitation of all the resources at the self reliance of the French colonial administration in Indochina enforced by abuses, including human rights abuses.
People keep saying bad thing about the French Colonization but forgot what the Chinese had did, they took away our language writing system and we had to learned a different form of Chinese which was very difficult. Many Vietnamese were illiterate before the invention of the current writing system.
Well it is a video about French colonialism of Vietnam… I’m sure on a video of the erasure of Vietnamese culture by China there are critiques of China.
Me, an Asian in America: “they still are fucking illiterate! I can’t even talk to my mom in English and the bitch has lived here 30 fucking years!”
Chinese? Or Mongolian? I'm pretty sure before the french roll in it's the Yuan that control Vietnam. (For a brief time)

Most of these history are written by French and they are not valid/facts. King Gia Long is a nobody, he's not a King descendant. He got kick out of Vietnam and become a nomad in Thailand and later return to Vietnam with Thai followers to start a civil war. He invited the French and allow them to take over the country with ease. If it's not LadyBoy king, there is no way French able to win war or battle with Vietnam. Mongolian, Manchurian, etc. cannot invade Vietnam yet alone the French

Everybody makes fun of France but it's the only country in history that conquered and held Vietnam for 100 years + even the Mongols and the Chinese never managed to do so.
Nope, China(Han dynasty)colonized what would be the northern part of Vietnam for 1000 years, under the name "Nam Viet(Nanyue)" before they broke apart, sure it wasn't continuous as some rebel here and there but even if that 1000 years period break into smaller periods, it was still more than just "100 years".

The US had to take over the war the French started and cost many lives and money for the US. Lyndon Johnson should have not stuck his huge nose in it.
Why cant colonizers just build upward intsead of outward?
it will waste their time.
During French Indochina period, the native people really developed the idea where they would give up their demand for independence, and work with French in the greater country named French Empire.
However, that idea failed. No matter if they natives work and study so hard that they become the workers better than French, the French will never pay the natives with the same salary as French, and will never let the natives have any position where they can lead the French in any company. In summary, French Empire is the country where " the French at first.". You now can understand why French didn't want to improve the industrial of their colonies.
Finally, every native get tired and revolt.
