Great job Leon! This is why i like these kind of video's and learning every time i watch them. Last year my car engine started running rough. Took me a week to figure it out by testing several things. At the end it was a stupid 40 euro sensor that repaired it, 5 minute job. Used tips from video's like these and read a lot on forums. Can save you heaps of money!
I had an aerostar that shut off every 15 minutes , but would start up okay and run fine for another 15 minutes . he had been to 3 shops and all 3had charged him an hour labor and could not find a problem !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the negative battery terminal was loose !!!!! that's all !!!! got to start with the basics !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! great channel !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Give a guy a box of tools and he thinks he is tech. I think we can all see from this it takes a bit more than that. Cannot help thinking you had one hell of a smug smile on your face when you to bed that night and well you deserved it. Great work again and thanks for sharing it.
Hope this might help somebody, had all the same problems on my son's fiesta as i said in a comment before, done all the same in your vid still no joy, found out it was the 02 sensor that sit's at the top at the back of the engine but the mad thing was it did not put the eml on so there was no fault codes all done and sorted but still wish you was my local mechanic a true and honest car mechanic great vids thanks for all your help.
it,s kind of sad when the ownwer does,nt let the service man buy parts he needs. I mean that you are not a magician. Fortunately you could fix it without extra parts and the old Ford runs like a new Merc.( as some times ownwers wish). It,s nice to see an honest man work. Thumbs up for you.
The owner's wallet had already been "burned" on previous shops. So it's not so difficult to realize. That when the call comes, to put more parts the owner is looking at the same movie, all over again... In the end it all makes sense. Good job Leon. BTW I'll drop my 2 cents before walk away. ;-) Vacuum gauge! Yeah I'm that old school. I started before OBD came to existence. Although I consider OBD the "go to", just like everybody else. There's still a bunch of cases where it's definitely a more accurate tool. This is a good example. ;-) Keep up the good work. Cheers
South Main Auto Repair I will have to make sure he doesn't see that message if he sees that you're in trouble I'm not responsible anything he does just be careful lol
Because I don't do cars that much I don't have access to diagnostics but I remember having an issue with the escort we had at the time. I thought I could hear some sort of vacuum leak but couldn't see anything. Spraying a bit of brake cleaner around found that hose underneath the plenum chamber that's impossible to see or get at had split... and as you say 'Boom' and the problem was sorted 😊
Have a similar issue on a 05 fiesta 1.4, it has very strong petrol smell & cuts out after starting unless your revving it, once it’s warmed up it’s runs lot better. Forgot to mention great video 👍🏻 really appreciate it cheers Glyn
Fantastic video Leon and I was wondering too why customers bring their cars in when it's empty. Good that you caught the second vacuum leak and amazing the other two shops didn't find a simple issue. At least the customer knows that you're honest and hopefully will bring her car back to you for service in the future. Have a good one Leon!
Ages ago I had an erratic idle intermittently. I was told vacuum leak by everyone in my cars forum. I was told not to spray stuff to avoid damaging other parts and listen for a whistle/hiss. Smoke machine seemed excessive for DIYer (I was also young with a lack of space). I was told to use a propane torch but not light it obviously. Go around all the fittings until you get a different idle then look closely at those parts. I was not experienced enough because I found nothing. I proceeded to look for another solution so I started with a seafoam treatment. While trying to suck up the seafoam from the brake booster I spilled a bit and the liquid got sucked up from somewhere hard to see. The brake booster plastic fitting had a hairline crack that got pretty big at the bottom. I must have not used the propane torch thoroughly the first time. Now that I knew the location I was able to get an idle change using the torch in that area. I was also able to hear the hiss. One dorman help fitting later erratic idle is gone and the lean running code went away.
There's more than one way to skin a cat I hear people saying you can't do this you can't do that all the time I'm in most cases it's just wrong people also say you cannot do a resistance check on an airbag where you can I prove it countless of times
An ex girlfriend had a similar problem many years ago with a normally aspirated Citreon BX which would die after it was driven hard. It turned out to be two grooves in the cam shaft where the fuel pump follower lever engaged. At a certain temperature, the cam shaft shrunk so the two edges of the follower would drop into the grooves & the fuel would loose pressure...it took me ages to figure it out.
good wee exercise Leon, but a was waitin on a loud bang and a singed beard when you were spraying that easy start onto a hot engine....haha, and them part changing garages need a kick in the bolloks................keep up the good work cheers from bonnie Scotland Willie.
Hi mate as I'm sure you can imagine it's going to be impossible for me to answer that you're going to need error codes and to do some tests it could be literally 1001 things causing this problem
Can you do a video on how to inspect a diesel engine for purchase? Things to look out for, bad injectors etc etc with examples of a bad/worn diesel engine? Thanks.
4:05 good thing I saw this before driving a Fiesta (breakdown service courtesy cars are all Fiestas, e.g.), as I would assume that latch was the steering column adjustment and then I'd be down the road with the bonnet catch undone.
Well done Leon , I find it interesting how a garage will throw parts on and say Bob's your uncle but not fix the complaint LOL And who invented that idea of pay me now for not fixing your car. HAHA I say TT on them :)
I hear on some of the newer cars you can put on the older diesels no you cannot do you have to do all the checks with fuel flow compression boost and so on
Well, that's your problem lady. ride around with a can of musical break Kleen. good video. Guess we need the actress from the movie My Cousin Vinny to represent this one. ❤️️
many years ago two guys came into a garage I worked in, looking spanners to change a wheel on a landrover, I gave them two sockets a t bar and 4'' extension and the basterds never came back .
It's a shame that customers go from shop to shop... by the time "the good guy" gets to look at it, the customer is upset and doesn't have money for an "actual" fix. At least you found some leaks and returned the car in better working order. I'm sure she'll be back in the future... now that she has found someone who knows what he's doing! I'm telling you... a tattoo of my logo would look really good on the back of your head! =)
Two bolts just behind the HT leads with oil seeping from below them. I'm going to assume it's a Ford dealership part job. Literally a case of unbolt, remove seal and replace?
leak was too small to cause stalling, i think something else is going on, ive left entire pipes off before and the engine runs fair enough, hope it was fixed and lady was happy
You don’t half work on some shitboxes mate ! With the state of the car after it’s been to two other garages and a tightwad owner not wanting to pay for anything else you did well to sort that ! Makes me wonder how you afforded a Verus though with these sort of jobs. 😀
Had a very similar problem with my Mondeo - PCV valve failed open and ripped a 90 elbow = constant vacuum at idle. Trouble is it's a V6 and the PCV is buried right between the banks. Utter twat to get to. I ran the engine while poking at it with a (unlit!) propane torch - if the engine picks up, there's your leak;).
I all ways amazes me the shoddy ness of some garages .this is just basic stuff that any garage who has a clue should be able to fix .and if not they should not be running a garage.
Proper investigative engineering. And shared on UA-cam. Brilliant. Thank you.
Great job Leon!

Today's top tip: Easystart helps you find vacuum leaks.
top tip sorted

stuzman thanks a lot mate yes cannot believe they couldn't find this either they just like to throw park at it and hope for the best
stuzman But you can guarantee that if the work involves dropping the fuel tank, it will be full to the brim!

OBD2 was standard in the USA in 1996, EOBD2 was standard and compulsory by 2000. Diesel was compulsory from 2004 for EOBD2 compliance.
💪
Well done you r very thorough a real mechanic.
Thanks mate
Not forgetting points and condenser 👍👍👍
Hi thank you for your time and expertize could you tell me where you get your car wiring diagrams from cheers

good work. Looks like your competition is keeping you in business with their shenanigans
Badgertronix hahaha let's hope they keep doing it even more
Great video Leon and i think Eric O needs to get a copywrite on his brake cleaner noise lol
Paul Mayou lol
That was the easy start noise, it was a semi tone higher
Nice video there Leon! Nothing like a little breath of starting fluid to get your day off buzzing :D
Hayward's Automotive lol it certainly wakes you up

Great job Leon, now where have I heard that noise before for brake cleaner lol.
125 SM I'm not sure I think I'm the first person to use that I'm pretty sure I am lol
Hi mate. Thanks for the video. My car cuts off when its hot and not when cold. What do think that suggests? A vacum leak? Thanks
Hi mate as I'm sure you can imagine it's going to be impossible for me to answer that you're going to need error codes and to do some tests it could be literally 1001 things causing this problem
Eric O might be having a word with you.
mccaskd I can handle him bring it on lol
Can you do a video on how to inspect a diesel engine for purchase? Things to look out for, bad injectors etc etc with examples of a bad/worn diesel engine? Thanks.
8ile ok mate will do
4:05 good thing I saw this before driving a Fiesta (breakdown service courtesy cars are all Fiestas, e.g.), as I would assume that latch was the steering column adjustment and then I'd be down the road with the bonnet catch undone.
Jan Verschueren that would have been an interesting drive
A short, but interesting drive indeed. :D

you can make a homemade smoke machine, it's very simple
Well done Leon , I find it interesting how a garage will throw parts on and say Bob's your uncle but not fix the complaint LOL And who invented that idea of pay me now for not fixing your car. HAHA I say TT on them :)
STEVE ROB lol so are you going to tell me
how would you check the fuel trims on a diesel
I hear on some of the newer cars you can put on the older diesels no you cannot do you have to do all the checks with fuel flow compression boost and so on
@@bodgitandleggitgarage thanks for the info

many years ago two guys came into a garage I worked in, looking spanners to change a wheel on a landrover, I gave them two sockets a t bar and 4'' extension and the basterds never came back .
That's the problem when you're a nice guy
Long live the carburetor 😂😂😂

8ile new seals around the Bolt if it's the ones I'm thinking you're thinking of
Two bolts just behind the HT leads with oil seeping from below them. I'm going to assume it's a Ford dealership part job. Literally a case of unbolt, remove seal and replace?

I use a churchil
Don't think I've ever seen a fuel tank quite so empty. :/
David Knowles lol unfortunately I see it a lot very frustrating
The dealer would have better hope than that outher shop. Few hundred worth of parts replaced when no parts required
lol

Most garages are wankers
