Here's a fun story, in Poland we have a notorious scalper called Yuki. One day he bought around 50 copies of Tokyo Jungle, believing it will never have an international release. So one weekend he pulls out a stack of these, and was unpleasantly surprised at people ridiculing his price tag, as the game not only was released in the meantime, it came very cheap. He only ever sold a single copy, and even that one was swiftly returned, with the kid's mother threatening to call the police accusing him of scam XD

This has literally made me remember getting our PS2. It worked. For about 3 minutes. Then the disc drawer jammed half open - with one of the discs INSIDE. Nothing we could do would make it budge.
Needless to say we took it back to Woolies and got a replacement, which is to this day still (mostly) working. Although it can be a bit fickle about reading discs but that only cropped up as an issue YEARS later.
Oh, and we forgot to get the disc out and returned the first time and we had to go back in the next day and sheepishly ask for it back. xD
Was totally unaware that our console wasn't just a one-off. I might have to go do some reading up on that, it sounds interesting. :D

Since retailers were popping up with preorders out of nowhere, people (and resellers) were following any lead they could to try and figure out where the next round would show. So there was a reddit troll who claimed Kmart would open up their preorders at some absurd hour. Kmart is a struggling, bankrupted retailer here in the USA. They didn't get any SNES classics. But I can only imagine some poor souls staying up in vain trying to get one.

Because it's predecessor the Wii had been so popular, out of stock and scalped at launch (near Christmas) the scalpers thought the Wii U would be the same, little did they know that Nintendo had managed to confuse everyone with it's name and no one wanted on anyway. Widely in stock everywhere it left scalpers with mountains of them and trying to return 'em back to stores for refunds.

There was simply no reason to go online to by one at a higher price when it was in stores everywhere....except European retailers, but that's a story that people seem to ignore and forget and people generally just incorrectly assume different things happened with the Wii U than what actually did happen.

I was working for eBay when that $400 PS2 got sold. It was allowed because the description was exactly what was delivered. The ad stated For Sale: PS2 Original Box and Receipt. The buyer got the PS2 Original Box and the receipt. The biggest issue was that NO ONE read the description and made assumptions that weren't true. READ the description CAREFULLY before bidding. Biggest lesson learned.
My favorite karma story: A lawyer bought some expensive cigars, insured them including against fire damage. Smoked 'em all, the claimed they were destroyed in a series of small fires. The insurance company balked at this until a young know-it-all paid him off. The moment he cashed his check, they nailed him for insurance fraud for intentionally destroying his property with fire.

I had an original model PS2 and it lasted me for a long time - about 3 years. I remember how upset my mom was when GameStop refused to sell it without us also purchasing an "extended warranty" 4 months after launch that would let us just outright replace the PS2 in case it died. It was an extra $100, but it was good for 3 years. Towards the end of that, the disc tray would occasionally get stuck, but that was easily remedied by sliding a post card slid into the top. My mom reminded me of the warranty when I complained about it, so we took it in and got a free brand new PS2 almost 3 years after we purchased it. LOL

That's crazy they refused to sell it to her. That is surely illigal? I guess you got them back since you replaced it just before the warranty was up, but that's a really scumbag move on GS.
Im from Dublin and last week I was in Belfast. Same island but a different country and now out of the EU... Its a 90 min drive and every year I go for a weekend of Christmas shopping. Anyway I couldn't find anything I liked in Game(a game shop that predates Gamestop) but missus wanted Spyro for the Switch... So I go to pay and the bloke is pushing this membership crap on us...wanting like 18 pound upfront and a monthly fee after... I said 'no, I live in the Republic, we don't have Game anymore...not worth it'... He spent 2-3 minutes trying to persuade me that it would be worth it!
I was being polite and couldn't believe how much he was pushing this and taking up time.
Because it was a busy Saturday evening, thhe place was jammers...i just got annoyed and firmly stated 'I visit here once a year. I rarely buy games in shops. The only reason I'm getting this is because it just happens to be in stock and she wanted it. No I won't be making trips up to Belfast to buy games and no I don't want to spend a single penny more than the price of this. No ifs ands or buts, I don't want to hear the benefits again, I don't want to hear about savings.. I just want to buy the game and leave'
He stood there for a second until I said'Yeah can you ring that up for me we are in a hurry'...
Cheeky little cunt didn't even say thank you or goodbye. Just silently completed the transaction and didn't make eye contact! Had a huge pout on him! 😂 I'd say he was 24-25 or something and was sulking! 😂
The family behind me heard it all and as I was leaving I heard the mam say 'and I don't want any of that membership thing either OK?'

@@mccarthy5825 Larry covers the reasons why GameStop did it: Subquality components and/or manufacturing. Heck, the clerk at GameStop told us that about half of the consoles they sold were failing. I suspect that people were shoving them into little cabinets in entertainment centers and killing them with heat, but I knew at least two people who had the controller port failed and they took damn good care of their stuff. I got lucky and had a good one, but I can honestly say I've never been disappointed or ripped off by buying an extended warranty. As for being illegal to not sell, in the USA stores have the right to refuse service to anyone they want so long as it isn't a violation of the law, i.e. race, sex, or religious discrimination.

I wonder how many people only had enough for the system and had to walk away. There's no way they would get away with that now!
A neighbour of mine went through like 4 360s in a month. All from the same shop. They were so used to it they barely questioned it.
I reckon it will be this time next year before I think about a PS5. They are very hard to get here... My mam is retired but she got a job working for a huge toy/video game superstore chain until Christmas and she was saying that they get a small amount in every few weeks and every single time, no matter how quiet they keep it there's a huge line of people waiting for it. All night even. She's well used to getting consoles and the 'it' toy or game each Christmas, since my mega drive in 1991 and she said she's never seen anything like it. A few weeks ago there was a big fight for the last one. A young lady with a kid in a pram got it and a few people started on her... They had to get security to bring her to her car and make sure she got out OK.
Hopefully the chip shortage and supply problems will go away and a slim version comes out so it won't be an expensive nightmare to try get this console!
There's a few videos I've seen of incredibly modded Ps2s and Xboxes. They are jailbroken, have big hard drives and just full of emulators and Ps2 isos. Seem well worth it.

Nintendo isn't the problem. They've had two failed console launches in recent memory (3DS and Wii U)
Both systems were properly stocked and they saw stagnant sales. By limiting the stock they are able to move all the units they produce and create more demand from the public. (It's a safe tactic)
This is what Toy manufacturers do around Christmas to appear as the "Hot Toy for Christmas" which then creates more demand for the product.

Had an In-Game scalping event recently in World of Warcraft. If you had "Legendary" items below item level 1000 in your inventory you would obtain an in game currency for certain activities that could be used to obtain upgrades for your current legendaries. Once you had all your items upgraded, the currency would stop coming in. Then Blizzard announced that in an upcoming patch you could use that same currency to obtain new legendaries you did not yet have.
There was some legendary items that were made by players, and if they made them in the past before the previous patch they would be under item level 1000, and so the currency would still drop for you. So any of the lower level legendary items for sale on the auction house were all bought up by scalpers and marked up 3 to 5 times their original price. Within a few days Blizzard introduced a hotfix into the game that changed it so anyone of max level will ALWAYS have the currency drop for them no matter if they had any legendaries to upgrade currently or not. So that players could stockpile the currency prior to the patch that allowed them to then buy the new legendaries.
Therefore leaving all the scalpers with large piles of now greatly devalued and sub-par items, as no one wants to buy the item you would have to spend a bunch of game time to upgrade again toi max level. I sure hope a bunch of them lost millions in gold in their little scalping attempt.

With how protective some companies can be of their properties, and how much they want money, I am surprised that many game publishers create scenarios where scalpers can thrive.
