These truly are incredible machines. As an artist that used to do all my copy and print work at a post office and a staples this thing s a game changer for a freelance artist. I can make just about anything I want at home with this thing and the print quality is amazing if you get the right kinds of paper. Great review very helpful.
Thanks for making this video. I couldn't find anything on the Epson instruction page / PDF manual on how to print a CD. In fact i didn't even know that there was a CD tray 'till I seen your video. I think you should be working for Epson :)
This is a backward step for CD printing. After the R200, which I believe was their first CD printer with manual tray, they raiseds their game after a few years with the 720wd (and another that I can't remember the number of) and built the tray into the machine and making it automatic. I still use mine after 15 years and in the time it takes my Mum's manual machine (XP605) to print just one full colour disc from lining up, I've printed 5 on mine. This 8550 does print quicker though, by the looks of it, but still - all that faffing about lining up trays etc. 😞

Search for videos by Keith Cooper or Fotospeed or Jose Rodriguez. They did some (a lot) of printing with this printer and the result are stunning. Especially the comparision video with the Epson P700 is interesting. I got mine a few weeks ago and I'm blown away by the quality on Fotospeed fine art paper. I also like the simple look and the size of the printer when tuned off. There are only a few things that kind of don't live up to the price of the printer: 1. Some plastic parts appear very cheap (rear feed, scanner cover) 2. Initially I got some smudges on thick fotopaper. It's easy to avoid if you turn on the thick paper option (you can print thin paper with this mode as well). BUT while the windows driver remembers the last setting the printer itselft forgets the setting when you enabled it via the printers menu. That means if you print without computer (directly from smartphone) you either have to enable thick paper option at the printer every time you turn it on or you risk getting smudges - and no, the smartphone app does not have this option. My solution: I loaded thinner photopaper in tray 1 that will be used for snapshots my wife prints from her phone. If I do quality prints I load the paper manually anyway. 3. The scanner seems dumbed down on purpose - when you use it without a computer. You cannot scan multiple pages one after another and get ONE PDF out of it. You always get one PDF for each page. You cannot scan directly to network shares or ftp, although cheaper Epson WF printer can do this. As a workaround I wanted to use print to cloud and basically that works, but first you cannot choose a resolution. You can only select between text or photo and black/white or color. And secon, you can also only connect cloud services offered by the big companies (Google drive etc.). Connecting to free stuff like OwnCloud/NextCloud is not possible.
The tray is slick. If you had a sheet of thick card stock, could you also insert it into that slot and print on it or would it only print in the circle?
This is not necessary. Apart from the two internal paper cassettes (one for A4 and one for photo paper up to 13x18cm), the CD tray and the upper rear feed the printer has actually a 5th way to feed printing media. You can remove the duplex unit at the back of the printer. That way you can feed thick cardboard as wide as A3+ and I think as long as 2m. It goes straight through the printer without any bending. This is not a hack it's the official way to print thick cardboard. I personally never needed it so far because the upper rear feed works fine even with 325gsm thick fine art paper. But If you want to print paper thicker than 1mm it's good to have the option - although it's somewhat cumbersome to use.
Hi, I've the same printer, but I can't select paper source and media type in epson photo+. Paper Source is set on Standard and I can't change it, can't understand why...
Actually my guitar teacher told me the same thing at one of his shows when i asked for a cd. I turned around and bought the CD of the metal band that did have them

This printer can do some amazing print quality in a 300GSM card stock.. better than any printer I used before (Canon and some pigment Epson printers)
