There's a thematic irony at work in One Piece that ought to be taken into account when discussing the hand of fate. Luffy is someone who believes himself to be free, but is constantly carried by fate to wherever he needs to be to fulfill his destiny. Contrast this with Blackbeard, who believes in fate but has to plot and scheme to make things to in the direction he feels they should, forcing it rather than just trusting that whatever he chooses to do is the right thing to do, like Luffy does. This is the irony. Most importantly though, when thinking of Luffy as a chosen one, we need to remember who did the choosing: Luffy chose to eat that fruit himself.

If impel down wanst already in chaos magellan would have killed all of them. If shiryu wasn't there he would have died regardless. And so on. If we follow BB as the main portaginsit، screams for plot armor would be absurd because BB gets lucky in an absurd way if shanks arrives a bit earlier BB can't steal white beards fruit, if white beard is a bit healthier he dies confronting him, if and if and if, a thousands of ifs lined up so BB could ascend in pre times kip just like luffy
@@ahmadazem4167 You spent a lot of time arguing against something I didn't say. What I said was: Luffy does whatever he feels like and is carried by fate where he needs to be, Blackbeard plans and tries to make things happen the way he thinks they should, as can be seen in his plan to capture someone worth 100 million so he could become a warlord so he could get into Impel Down and recruit people etc. instead of just waiting for fate to drop those crewmates in his lap. There's nothing to argue here.
Blackbeard is a strong believer in fate, and how can you say Luffy chose when all he had to do was eat a fruit that was right next him and had no idea what it was? You people need to readjust yourselves.
@@KalleVilenius So what's your point? Blackbeard doesn't have the luxury of being the main character and he's barely in the story. Yeah, some final villain.
I caught up to OP around the tea party from hell's part in WCI and been caught up reading scans ever since baby but my initial introduction was 4kids adaption and watched all of it then the dub version and watched that until Punk Hazard since the anime was getting pretty doo doo so finally after years of sitting on it I gave in to read the manga best decision ever.
Zoans have a will of their own, Nika's refuses to be captured by the World Government. Nika has promised to return and bring liberation. Those with the will of D have a "checkered fate" as the "enemies of the gods". Roger insisted that his son, a D, would be the chosen one, so Shanks took the Nika fruit to Dawn Island to give the fruit to Ace. However, Shanks met Luffy first, Luffy "said the same thing Roger said", and Nika CHOSE him. Luffy had a lot going for him; Garp and Dragon's D blood, Garp's survival training-- but that *spark*, the SPIRIT of freedom that Nika embodies, was a quality of Luffy's alone. Luffy had to nearly die to awaken Nika, and even then, Zoan fruits often overwhelm the personalities of their holders upon awakening- but Luffy remains Luffy. Nika may have been fated to return, but Luffy 100% EARNED the right to be his avatar.
I see Nate's criticism kf the whole destiny/Nika/Joyboy thing but As a Nika fan, I think it's relevant that Luffy's not just the Chosen One. It's that Luffy *chose* to be the Chosen One. Like, yeah, the destiny exists. But it's not that Luffy's destined to win because fate decided he was the guy; it's that through Luffy's unique characteristics, he snatched that destiny himself. Fate didn't choose Luffy, he *took* it. Unwittingly, sure, but nearly everything Luffy does is unwitting.
1:12:04 pretty sure that was dead on pointed during gear 5's reveal. it's because of luffy's perseverance and his own ambition and devotion to his dreams that he awakened the fruit.
@@frenchynoob there’s way more to pre timeskip that makes it great. To suggest that the logia countering aspect was so important in making it great is an insult to the writing
I don't think characters not dying is the real issue. Rampant character death would massively change the style and feel of the story. To have character death be somewhat common and maintain the serious overall comic atmosphere would push it more towards something like Chainsaw Man. I think the actual issue is how death is handled. On one hand, you have the fakeout deaths that serve no real purpose and feel like a weird form of Oda comedy. On the other, you have the occasional death that just isn't handled with the necessary gravitas. Ace was great. The Merry was great, etc. But I barely remember how Izo died and can't remember how Ashura Doji did. Why did the fakeout have more gravitas than the real thing? Sure, IRL death can be random, quick, meaningless, etc. But this is a story. And a story with that kind of death handling is more Game of Thrones than One Piece.
Also, the fundamental flaw of the battle system are the Logias. Their introduction necessitated the invention of standard ways to deal with them. Without them, you'd just have to give everyone Seastone weapons, which would fundamentally do the same thing. How are Shanks and Roger and Rayleigh standing up to the likes of Kizaru, Akainu, Kuzan, etc. otherwise?
I don't really mind the fake outs in insolation. Let's take Peru/Pell for example. He knew he probably wouldn't make it out alive and still chose to sacrifice himself for Vivi and the kingdom. The fact he didn't die in the end doesn't diminish his heroism or the amount of courage and inner strength he displayed that day. What I do mind though, is how often Oda uses fake out deaths throughout the story. It's kinda hard to really live in the moment feel for a character when you're always aware that it's probably just another bait and switch scenario
Right, I’ve never thought One Piece needed a much higher death count. I wouldn’t be upset if few characters died at all, it’s just extremely annoying and unsatisfying how Oda tries to have his cake and eat it too. He loves death fake outs, he wants the pathos and week by week twists to make people surprised - with so, so many scenes framed as if this was a death scene. He’ll stage it like a death, only to roll it pack somewhere between 1 chapter and a few hundred later. I absolutely don’t think One Piece should be grimdark or have tons more dead - but Oda is entirely to blame for constantly writing scenarios that setup these “death scenes”, which have the exact opposite effect of what he intends. I never worry much about the characters dying, that’s not where the tension comes from - but the death fakeouts totally kill my immersion and pull me right out. I suddenly feel skeptical and just don’t buy anything about the scene I’m currently reading. I love One Piece and have been reading for over 10 years, but it’s Oda’s most irritating writing trope for me.
56:50 I don't think Luffy's fruit being somehow more powerful when awakened changes the amount of effort Luffy put into getting good at using his powers. Remember that you needed to awaken the fruit and that in and of itself is already a rare occurence among devil fruit users. For context in canon there are only 12 confirmed awakened devil fruit users (i'm not counting the Gorosei until we get the name of the Fruits and I'm not counting Joyboy for various potential reasons why the gum gum fruit did not exist at the time)
Nate would also (rightfully) take issue with that. How does one awaken a devil fruit? It is essentially an asspull with no explanation. Fan theories include "you have to get really good with your fruit," or "you have to be pushed to the brink of death," but neither of these are unique to Wano.
I used to sing the 4Kids opening around my friend when I was losing at Yugioh just to trigger my friend 😂. I hated 4Kids version as well but has a special kind of hate. I had SJ magazines back then but not fully into it. Shonen Jump was truly peak in 2002-2008 so many good stories.
Do people forget that the very end of chapter 1 ends with the narrator saying “Luffy’s great voyage of DESTINY has begun”? Oda from the very beginning had given the expectations that luffy will get a destiny/fate plot (armor)
I think "One Piece" will end at Laugh Tale, with Luffy finding the One Piece. But then a new series will start that centers around the war with the World Government that comes after.
I think Oda has made it pretty clear that the Nika fruit didn't make Luffy, Luffy made the Nika fruit. In 800 years no one else was able to awaken it, eating it isn't an automatic win button, you have to have the right spirit and drive to make most of it, and it took 12 years of training and countless near death experiences for Luffy to do that. He had to have the rubber like quality to be willing to bounce back no matter how thin he got stretched to eventually earn the powers of the rubber god, with a weaker personality he would've remained regular rubber forever.
@@wwe12153 yeah the guy basically flat out says nika fruit diminishes luffys pretime skip accomplishments. He asks if that was luffys strength of will to save his friends, or was that just fate because he ate the nika fruit, and joyboy needed his full crew to fulfil his destiny. I think the big reason people hate nika fruit is like bge says, because it diminishes Luffys primary trait being the embodiment of freedom. I think this is just a misunderstanding of the primary beliefs of taoism. Following Wu Wei or your destiny is supposed to be natural and easy, and feels like true freedom.
It's the same reason Naruto was soured for me. If you introduce destiny and prophecy elements, even if subdued, there will always be a nagging feeling of, are the accomplishments REALLY due to hard work, strength of will and perseverance? Or were they simply destined to withstand those hardships to fulfil a prophecy? It's honestly so prevalent in Japanese storytelling, I'm eager if there's anyone who's studied this properly and found why it's so prevalent. There always has to be an explanation why the MC is actually a pure bred, god among men. He can never be an average Joe who trains hard. It feels like the Japanese are saying you can only make it in life if your born lucky and are destined for great things.
@@bradleycoates6297 bro. But you are missing the most important thing. Luffy himself won’t like to be a puppet of fate. Even if it is defined by his actions. It won’t be a job title, there is more to it definitely
@@bradleycoates6297 It's prevalent due to the popularity of buddism, shintoism, and taoism. This culture doesn't see destiny as a trap, or something that controls you. Luffy being destined to be king of the pirates doesnt down grade his accomplishments. Rather proves that he followed his way, with the maximum freedom possible. I would recommend looking up Wu Wei for a better explanation. Basically freedom and detachment allows one to do action through non action. wheras if he were not free and clinged to virtue or the images of the dao, then his actions would not be for himself. He saved his friends because he was destined to do it, is the same as saying that he saved his friends because he fought as hard as he could and never gave them up. If he had less freedom, he would've shy'd away from certain threats without even making the attempt.
the nika fruit thing is easy. In naruto, who’s best character? Rock Lee, pure will, bad at everything at baseline even bad taijustsu, The Eight Gates is a technique everyone can learn, is the only option for him, so just pure force of will. In one piece the nika fruit, makes Luffy like Naruto, the chosen one/reincarnation, TOP 3 devil fruit. And for creative waky fights I think just the awakening of a normal paramaecia gum gum fruit would’ve been enough. Everything will be rubber (just a Doflamimgo everything is strings) Lufyy would’ve been bouncing off of everything, lifting the ground, all the fun stuff without the toon force of the of a MYTHICAL ZOAN best fruit, destiny fruit, Joy Boy fruit,
too bad for you, Luffy is already choosen one since fishmen island. you clearly not pay attention. there is nothing bad about choosen one trope. One Piece never branded as a story about a normal boy become so strongest. it's advanture, screet of the world, freedom and opression.
The biggest issue with One Piece is the amount of time spent focusing on random character side stories and fighting gimmicky villians that don't move the story forward. These both grind the pace of the show to a halt and if you cut out all of the nonplot critical character stories and fights the show would have 500 episodes shorter. I just find myself sometimes skipping 10 episodes every arc.
Im confused why you say 4kids was only contracted to dub OP for 2 years... I'm sure toei and 4kids had some kind of disagreement that let funi grab the license early instead of 4kids sitting on the license for extra years
One Point against the Nika argument for me is, that Joy Boy failed. Luffy as Luffy himself made himself more powerful to overthrow the Tenryoubitou with the Nika Nika no mi and Joy Boy maybe could've done it too but he wasn't strong enough so it seems. And yes maybe he sacrificed himself for the greater Good but that still doesn't invalidate that he couldn't do it.
Could Luffy still succeed with any other devil fruit? That is the question that is raised when you change his weak paramecea to a MYTHICAL ZOAN whose previous user was so strong he was deified.
@@danieljliverslxxxix1164 i can't see why he wouldn't. before his devil fruit was awaked, he was still the determined goofball that wanted to be some pirate king. if anything, other devil fruits might have made things easier for him.
Gonna channel my inner Endless Jess and really show my neutrality. On one hand, yes I miss One Piece before Haki, and liked fights before its inclusion into the world. On the other missing Shanks hand, I’ve grown to accept it and still enjoy cool moments with it. I prefer Dragon Ball before ki blasts and universal flight, because the fights felt more dynamic; but naturally such elements became a staple of the story. Much like haki. And there’s possibly still things to be discovered about Haki that could make it more interesting. But it could also be made worse by over explaining. One piece isn’t perfect, I wish folks could accept critiquing something does not mean the absence of love for something. Clearly BGE loves One Piece, otherwise why would he care enough to think about it this much.

23:58 I'm fucking dying
Don’t you get it? This is the main problem why One Piece sucks now! THE CHOSEN ONE STORY PEOPLE! CHOSEN ONE! so where’s tf’n competition again?? Lmao

Nice mental gymnastics 👏

Film gold was my favorite film of the recent ones.
My theory: if there's a sequel it will be Koby's story from start to finish.
1:12:04 pretty sure that was dead on pointed during gear 5's reveal. it's because of luffy's perseverance and his own ambition and devotion to his dreams that he awakened the fruit.

Them having to figure out the counter to every logia and not actually using their own strength would’ve been wack.
People like you don't deserve pre-timeskip One Piece.
@@frenchynoob there’s way more to pre timeskip that makes it great. To suggest that the logia countering aspect was so important in making it great is an insult to the writing
@@WaakikiTheGoat and pretending it's _NOT_ a massive reason why pre-timeskip was so great, is simply idiotic.
@@ralfsstuffthat's a shounen issue tbh and I don't mind much in binge format for most cases

The girl at 1:23:09 is crazy and I don't believe her theory, but I can fix her.
I can tell she’s trolling
God I fucking hate it when people say that, it implies that fucking Ash can turn into pokemon Jesus
Why do you give shite arguments?
Have you seen the ova's tv specials(not episode ofs)? They're hilarious even if filler.
I think "One Piece" will end at Laugh Tale, with Luffy finding the One Piece.
But then a new series will start that centers around the war with the World Government that comes after.
1:08:00 a certain bald boi bursts on the scene
42:42 the furtive Ben Saint????
Holy shit, that was Ben! Bald Ben looks dope
I am surprised that you needed to explain all of that, isn't it obvious ? is the guy who made the video saying anything else ?
Nah, before anything else, why is there a "I can be your angle or yuor devil" picture of Oda on the screen at the start.
the nika fruit thing is easy. Everything will be rubber (just a Doflamimgo everything is strings) Lufyy would’ve been bouncing off of everything, lifting the ground, all the fun stuff without the toon force of the of a MYTHICAL ZOAN best fruit, destiny fruit, Joy Boy fruit,
Rock Lee being the best character being said so confinidently I respect it
too bad for you, Luffy is already choosen one since fishmen island. you clearly not pay attention. there is nothing bad about choosen one trope. One Piece never branded as a story about a normal boy become so strongest. it's advanture, screet of the world, freedom and opression.

I think you’re wrong about the Skypiea siloutte of luffy not being planned
The biggest issue with One Piece is the amount of time spent focusing on random character side stories and fighting gimmicky villians that don't move the story forward. These both grind the pace of the show to a halt and if you cut out all of the nonplot critical character stories and fights the show would have 500 episodes shorter. I just find myself sometimes skipping 10 episodes every arc.

Im confused why you say 4kids was only contracted to dub OP for 2 years... I'm sure toei and 4kids had some kind of disagreement that let funi grab the license early instead of 4kids sitting on the license for extra years
Get you a girl that looks at you the way Shaybs looks at Nate.
