Yep, perfect analogy. An enemy of the Turkish Republic hiding beneath a veneer of civility and charm. I suppose the Syrian Civil War was for Erdogan like the Clone Wars was for Palpatine, using it to gain leverage and play the sides against one another. Once the army try to overthrow him, like the Jedi tried to overthrow Palpatine, he reveals himself to be a reactionary Islamist, just like Palpatine was a Sith Lord.

Losing my shit over the revelation that my dad, a Lebanese armenian from Beirut that immigrated to America, took us on family walks through malls/shopping centers without buying anything probably for similar reasons to why Turkish people did that in the 2000’s

@@nicholassternon5857 At 21:29 he talks about how in Turkey with the wave of shoppings malls that were built because of corrupt contracts w the government there was a strange social phenomenon where poor families would go on "family walks" through these malls to look at all the stuff they can't buy with the idea that one day they'd be prosperous enough to afford them.
Air conditioning in malls have a big part in this. People go to malls more often on summer and winter.

Me, after watching 3 hours of Turkish Century: So this was a "Basic" background information set?!
Turkish politics and anatolian history is so complicated that these videos can be considered basic.
If 3 hours were enough to understand all about a subject, everyone could be an expert on everything
Being from the Ozarks... Our region is very complicated for the few people that live here.
For as young as our history is. When talking about social issues they are very complex for what they are. Then again that can almost be for every country/region.

As an American, I just want to say that so so many Americans regret the Iraq war so so much, and see it as one of our greatest mistakes and failings.
I think US is the perfect example of what most of the countries doing in the world.
Despite being a unique innovation (a combination of many different nations) it acts just like a conventional country; focuses too much on regulating the world power and fails at addressing the needs of its people.

We tend to fetishize the idea of individual/personal "responsibility" to an unrealistic degree. It's one of the reasons why universal healthcare is such a difficult sell and also why our "self defense" culture is so extreme. The spectre of governmental over reach is also a major factor in why we are so suspicious of the government doing things "for the people".
The Iraq war in a way was necessary. Definitely prevented a genocide of the Kuwaitis by the hands of Saddam. And the instability in the middle east was inevitable when Ataturk banned the caliphate and the entire Muslim world was left scrambling on defining what their identity truly was.

@@welcometothenextstep6496 It's really, really difficult to argue seriously that in order to stop a genocide it was necessary to kill a minimum of 150k innocent civilians and destroy their infrastructure to an irreparable degree. Saddam's own mass killings are a convenient scapegoat for this, but anyone with eyes can see the destruction actually makes the American side look about as bad as Saddam in the first place. Defending the Iraq war in any way, which even the American state considers to be a mistake, is poor optics and poorer morals.

It makes our perspective relatively objective against both the West and the East but it also divides the country even harder than the democrats and the republicans are. However that's possible.
That would be true if our education system would let citizens of our country to build such an outgoing view to the modern world. This is ironic: While this current party in power go against Atatürk′s ″mind your own business″ principle and chase influence in Europe and Middle East, the average Turkish citizen′s view of the modern world became narrower and narrower to the point it's fixated on Erdoğan′s views or opposition′s reactions to those views, dependent on what kind of family and environment the citizen in question has been born into and grew up in.
The modern world is becoming evermore polarized in the hands of nationalism rising in almost everywhere and the geopolitics of Turkey could build the perfect view of modern societies′ problems and their solutions on its citizens′ mind. But sadly, the only people who can benefit from others′ experiences are the brightest ones, and such a person′s name has been mentioned in the first episode: Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The very education system whose foundations he had built himself (Atatürk wrote the first geometry textbook in the country) has been changed so much, now it's a machine that spits out students to take extra 2-4 years in universities only to find themselves in the ever growing army of the unemployed. So all a university graduate in here can think about is whether they can ever feed themselves. There is hardly any place for priceless perspectives on the modern world history on their minds.
As a Turk i can say that documentary is objective of course there were some informations that you should give to viewer but i didnt see any fake news or some shit just real things. He basically made a documentary that can give historical, political, social, and culturel info about Turkey well done my friend it makes me sad that there is no Turkish version of guy that makes this video but i must say Teşekkürler to you

This video series is an embodiment of the internet's value as a medium. An independently produced, hours long documentary which covers, in an outstandingly exhaustive yet entertaining fashion, an extremely important topic and one which all non-Turkish mainstream outlets ignore because they have their head too far up their *** in their own Euro/American/Arab centric issues and biases. Bravo on providing non- Turkish audiences with this magnifcient window into the dynamics of this region.

Just wow. As a 20 year old turkish guy, i can easily say that this documentary is the most objective and the most accurate thing about turkey i have seen in my entire life. It has to be a mandatory lesson in schools.
As a Turk grew up in a non-religious secular family, I watched all three parts in one go, and it was awesome. This is a thorough analysis of Anatolia and Turkey trying to be unbiased from start to finish. Those videos even revealed me some questions I would've never asked before seeing things through glasses of a third party. I can't thank you enough for your hard work, this was very insightful even for me, who has been living for 30+ years in Turkey. Even though I'm ethnically a Turk, I feel like a minority because I'm a non-Muslim, and I have been getting gradually more concerned and hopeless for my country year by year. Hope everything changes for the better in the future.

Hi. I am a Turkish Gen Z person. I've been speaking English fluently since age 14. Throughout my early teenage years I have traumatized myself with the racism, discrimination and hate in the Countryball community. Even when they were not openly hateful, majority of Turkey content was biased against Turkish people. So I stopped even looking at any countryball content since then. I gave this video a chance after 4 years and I am so shocked about how objective and correct this video is without any hate or internalized racism. Thank you so much for making this video. It was very entertaining and informative.

The only parts of Ethiopian history I know are how they're the people most likely to own the Ark of The Covenant and are one of the few countries to successfully drive off attempted colonization, and that alone makes me want to know more.

As a Turk, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the first part of the series a few months ago. When I woke up that day, I sure wasn't expecting to see a 2-hour long documentary by a foreign guy about Turkish history on my UA-cam recommendation feed. I immensely enjoyed the whole series, well done sir.
Most likely because I've lived through it all very recently, I found the only lacking part in these video series was the Gulen-Erdogan dynamics. But that is quite a niche topic for an outsider and very recent therefore I understand there could be a lack of trusted sources on the issue as well. Overall, incredible work.

When it started out, I didn't think this series would end up getting me into Turkish HipHop. Good stuff.
Turkish rock from 70s is also great. You should check Anatolian Rock Revival Project youtube chanel. They post mostly underrated 60s and 70s Turkish rock. American rappers like Dr. Dre and Mos Def use some of those songs as samples.

Im a Turk. i have read and learned first two video’s subjects in school, heard from older generations. it was impressive to seeing something that well put together. i was happy cuz people from other countries will have a great source to learn about my country’s history. but this one, i literally lived all these.

I was enlisted in the Cyprus army at the time the 2016 coup happened, and every single higher up in the ranks at the time was sure the coup was a sham. Apart from the reported cases of soldiers being told that its a drill and not a coup, which might happen in an actual coup, what gave it away in their opinion was that they didn't cut the country's telecommunications. According to them, the first thing you should do in a modern coup, if you are not a complete moron or pretending to coup, is to cut the telecommunications network of the country. The fact that the coup was ongoing and Erdogan was publicly skype calling the Turkish ppl announcing he is fine, plus the fact that not a single one of Erdogan's administration was arrested during the coup, kinda gives it away as a sham coup to give Erdogan a reason to arrest opposition and do a rapid cleanse of the army ranks.

@Furkan8k that was the reason. I don't know if the ringleaders of the coup thought it as genuine or just pendent to make a coup, but I believe that the coup was a very well directed provocation.
The reason? What followed it. The concentration of all powers of the Turkish state and the silencing of all dangerous opposition.

The telecommunications wasn't cut off because the coup attempt was conducted earlier then on planned time, due to coup plans leaking and coup plotters getting cold feet.
Just because you can't answer some 'though' questions doesn't mean it was a fake coup attempt.

Hello Kraut! First of all, thank you for this amazing documentary about Turkish history. As a Turk, I really enjoyed watching all three parts. You successfully made great educational materials for people who want to know more about Turkish people, Turkish culture, and Turkish politics.
I can confirm most of what has been said and shown in this documentary is objective and true to history. Especially the events in this part, because I sadly lived and witnessed these (still ongoing) disastrous events.

@Lord Ball-sac the 2nd they've lived in Novi Pazar for while longer. Not really of Saudi disposition, in fact Iran was the first large provider of weapons and funding. Things change, Saudis have money to spend and with money comes influence, they're buying land, opening schools and even built a hospital. You can never be too careful about such influence, people can be swayed and radicalized. Turkey has unmatched soft power due to historical ties, much more than Russia does to Serbs and Germany to Croats.

As if this is all this nation with a thousands of history is about. Noone knows nothing more than these words about a 80 million nation. This was frustrating to me. As Turks, collectively, I think we owe you a 'thank you'. Thank you for researching all this information to the last bit and preparing better instructive stuff than the current education system of our country. Seriously, you cant learn more than half of this stuff in your Turkish compulsory education of 11 years (I may be wrong about the length but it's around 11) both the negative and the positive knowledge. I think that’s because it’s told by the various perspectives and how we are seen from the outside. All the negative and positive aspects in a neutral way, it’s pretty good and informational even though there might be still some mistakes.

Several corrections i wish to make:
For the first years of AKP, Erdoğan was just a figurehead. Over the years he took control of the party, kicking out his old allies and filling the party with loyalists. That's when he started to rule Turkey with his own ideology and Turkey changed course, while also taking credit for the developments in the first years of AKP.
Presidential System does have limitations, a person can be elected as presidently only twice, it's in the constitution. He theorically can't stay in power forever.
Erdoğan did not.want to change law according to sharia. That bill about rape was a pardoning of statuory rapes for some if they were married. The reason was that many people in the less developed countrysides still marry with minors (unoffical marriages, age of consent is 18 in Turkey, many of those girls at age 15-17 and their husbands barely above 18). These people ended up getting imprisoned for statuory rapes after many years of their marriage. Many wives of such men demanded release of their husbands.
Young turkish people don't necessarily lean towards left, they simply start to resemble their European counterparts, many Turkish youngsters are openly atheist but their opinions would be considered right wing in Europe.
2016 coup was staged by Gulen, not by Kemalists. It's a fact. After the purge, many kemalists who were imprisoned in the Ergenekon trials returned back to their positions. I would say the army is more kemalist than before 2016, but they would not risk staging a coup.
Erdoğan is an islamist who wishes to be caliph, but he can only convince the capabable men to take action if the action would pragmatically benefit Turkey. That's why Turkey's intentions are always blurred, if Turkey follows islamist ideology or just uses religion for its own interests. No matter how strong Erdoğan is, he cannot just send army to wherever he wishes.
Turkey and Iran have OK relations. Turks and Iranians have nothing against each other. Turkey dislikes the Iranian engagement in the ME but nevertheless both countries have an understanding coming from historic and cultural ties.

-during the aftermath of the coup attempt, erdoğan created a nationwide paranoia, as he accused his criticizers of being a "fetöcü". this resulted in various dissident journalists or authors being locked up (i guess he did kinda mention that bit in the video, after all one thing everyone knows about turkey is the locked up journalists). the weird thing is that the akp voter demographic was very fond of fetö during their prime while everyone else called akp out for giving gülen and his men enormous influence and power. after the coup, all of a sudden akp voters became the most zealous haters of gülen movement.

Even if Brazil and Turkey have histories as different as it can be, many of the instabilities, economical or political, and the dreams of a sovereign, prosper and democractic nation are the same.

Thanks a lot Kraut. I've been feeling Turkey's important for the modern story, but I've not been able to put my finger on it. It is rarely covered much in the media, which around here has been mainly flailing between "otto man bad" and "you no be racis". This trilogy has greatly helped understand its place in history and modernity.
Also, I love the polandball style. Even if it makes it twice as long to watch properly when you count the pauses :).

I love how instead of simply glossing over the details and making the 20-minute video on the subject you originally wanted, you went back and explained everything, weaving accurate and interesting narrative threads and themes to make everything seem purposeful. I know a hundred times more about Turkey than I did before this video, and it never once felt like a barrage of miscellaneous information. I never knew about how and why democracy and liberalization co-existed with conservative Islam and all the complications in that relationship.
