Do Tires Need to be Inflated Differently in Cold Weather? - FYF Episode 19

  • Did you know you need to inflate your tires with more air when the temperatures drop? It's true. But beware, you should know the recommended PSI for your vehicle and your maximum PSI rating for your tire before deciding how much air is needed to fill your tire properly. Getting it right will improve your fuel efficiency, decrease unusual wear and tear on the tire and increase the tire's lifespan.

i had to jack up the car and let my inflator re-fill inside the house to get them pumped up a little on a forty below zero morning.

Nitrogen is a ripoff. 90% of the atmosphere is already nitrogen.

This has been a hot topic, for sure. It is widely recognized by racing groups and tire companies that Nitrogen will escape tires more slowly (40% slower) which in turn will provide more stable tire pressures over a longer period of time. Of course their are many benefits of proper tire pressure on other aspects of your drive-ability.

Is it much more difficult to change a tire at a low temperature? I completed my 1st tire, balanced it, and ready for the 2nd one, but the temperature here dropped. I saw in one film how they heated the tire w/heat gun, but how much, where exactly, all that is kind of vauge. Also in that film they were working on tractor tires, I have just regular passenger car (R16 tires). My HF Tire Machine is mounted outside, while it is snowing I won't do anything, but tomorrow it will be clear. So I decided to do a small research on the subject meanwhile. At what temperature you can change tire more or less comfortably, can you do it @45F, or it is too low? My main concern is that I can tear the tire or burn it w/heater gun. Thank you for a great film.

It is going to be more difficult to change a tire in colder whether as the rubber on the tire is going to be harder in the colder weather, thus making it tougher to manoeuvre the tire around and break the bead. I would recommend not heating up a passenger car tire. In the video you are talking about, they are heating up tractor tires. A passenger car tire is much thinner and less strong and if the tire is heated up too much, it would become structurally unsafe to drive on as it can compromise the tensile strength of the rubber.
If you are talking about just changing a spare, the weather shouldn’t affect anything other than convenience.

@@lacombeford Thank you so much, I was thinking to apply a bit of heat, but I'll never do now. I'm sorry I didn't explain well my project. I bought new tires fm/Tire Rack and installing them on Chevy 2003. I don't think it will be much harder to break a bead, since I have Bead Buster XB-452 and it was very easy to do it @60F (I did the 1st tire in my life), so I hope I'll do the 2nd @ 35-40 (I mean breaking the bead part). But worry about putting back the new tire, how not to tear it, since the rubber will be more dense. Probably I'll just try slightly, and if it will be very hard better wait till the next week w/expected 60F (we are in Dallas, TX). I've recently read that on snow tires all that doesn't matter. Though I bought All Season tires, it can be temperature effect on installation I guess. Thank you again.

Nitrogen is affected by temperature just like air. Why ? Because pV = nRT. Simple physics.

You are right. However, we have found that Nitrogen escapes more slowly than air from the tire so your tire remains more stable for longer. Not a temperature thing, you are right. A mistake in this video.
