A Symbol of Resilience: Bison in Winter
During the cold winter season, bison develop thick, woolly coats that help protect them from freezing temperatures and harsh winds. It is said that a bison's winter coat is so thick and provides insulation so effective that when snow accumulates on its coat, it will not melt from the heat of the bison's skin. Their skin also thickens in response to cold temperatures and fatty deposits appear to insulate the animal. This is important because during winter storms, bison will actually turn toward the storm, hunker down, and wait for it to pass. With thick coats and creating a low profile, bison can survive the same storm that would kill many domestic livestock. Bison also have the ability use their large head and massive neck and shoulder muscles as snow plows to forage in snow as deep as four feet!
They have adapted to efficiently find nourishment from low quality forage that allows them to battle blizzards, -40 degree temperatures, and 50 mph winds.
Under cold stress, bison have developed the adaptation to minimize nutritional needs and slow their metabolism to conserve energy.
They slow down their metabolisms, the amount of time they spending foraging, and the amount of food they consume in order to conserve energy. Bison also have the ability to generate internal body heat through digestion. Forage is retained longer in their gut - due to the increase of indigestible plant material found in the winter - which allows them to eat less but still receive the nutrition they require. Without these adaptations, surviving the freezing temperatures and blizzard storms would not be possible.
A muscular hump supports a massive head, a snow plow that clears away drifts and uncovers buried grasses. A dense coat and layers of fat stave off the punishing wind and cold. These beasts carry winter with them every step.

Where you live, what animal(s) do you have that you associate with endurance and resilience? Bison are amazing creatures and one of my favorites, no matter what season!! I hope you enjoyed watching these magnificent beasts in a winter wonderland. Thank you for your support and kindness. I am grateful for both.
Beautifully presented. That was a great sharing .I wish you a wonderful day.
Excellent filming. This is sad, though. It amazes me how deer, ducks and geese survive extreme temps. Even little birds.
Thank you for sharing.
Weekend greetings and regards.
Very strong and beautiful animals. Thanks for the marvelous video 👍
Wow such incredible captures Becca 😍 those are stunning Bison! Love the winter vibe too.
Hello Becca. Beautiful scenery and beautiful animals. I liked it. I send greetings and wish you a nice Sunday.🌞Pavel 🦊
Powerful film of the bison Becca. Beautifully filmed and edited. Thank you for sharing the need for resilience and for filming these magnificent animals in a snowstorm! Best regards, Cathy
Life is hard for a bison in Winter. Great shots of the snow on their faces and the blizzard at the end! Best wishes, Rob

I can only imagine how must have been, when there were in the millions. So nice to see the save from extinction!Great video friend!
What an incredible piece of film. And the quotations are wonderful - I absolutely loved the final shots of the Bison moving towards the camera through deep deep snow.
Stunning stuff Becca 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Bison are so amazing. You caught some great shots of them cutting through the snowbanks. And it shows that they too are not perfect and sometimes stumble in the deep snow. Very admirable animals.
Hello Becca, there are a lot of animals and birds with endurance and resilience but when i have to pick on out i go for the Great Tit.When it has 9 chicks and it is 40 degrees they have to
work very hard to feed them in bad circumstances.I also like the Bisons and the images are wonderful. Here in my nature reserve are 15 Wisents -the european version - but they are
behind a thread.I can go in because i know a befriended ranger who takes me with him.Greetings Gijs
Wow what a film and lovely presentation.
