When mining copper, I like digging underneath the deposit. Basically creating a cave where you can mine in peace until you get all but the roof done. Also you can make a work bench under the deposit, which acts as a roof enabling you to repair you pickaxe.
Thanks a great idea!
really like the series!
No spoiler tip:
look at the new available items you can craft with your Hammer, on the Crafting section - its a game changer!
(it needs Tin)
🙂👍😅
Tip: If you click on a marker that's already on the map, (left click on kb/m, not sure what it is on controller), it'll put a red-cross on the icon. Can use this to mark a cave as "done".
I bet a lot of people were shouting "AXE!" at their screens when you were deciding what to make. You'll soon realise it ideally should be the first Bronze weapon/tool you make.
Thanks for the icon tip, will make life a lot easier for me. 😅 I can only imagine.
"I'm gonna go for the bronze sword" - everybody else screaming at their monitor *NO!* :-D
But it's your game and you play it like you want. It's meant for you to enjoy :)
And luckily once you've started to get bronze, you quickly get upgrades, but the sword is probably the worst option to get as your first bronze weapon.
It's cool to have a sword and I get it, but it's a trap.
Nothing at this level is vulnerable to slashing dmg, so you're better off with the mace as your primary weapon. Skellies are vulnerable to blunt and the rest of the mobs aren't resistant to it.
Good that you got the bronze axe as well, so you can cut down harder tree types, such as birch and oak to get fine wood. You'll need lots of fine wood to get your next level bow and to make furniture.
(furniture increases your comfort level in your base which will add 1 minute of rested buff time for each additional level of comfort)
And sorry for the spoilers - please let me know if I should give less info. I really enjoy watching your journey, but I find it hard not to do some back-seat driving ;)
🤘🤘
Thanks for this @1983phk
Expanding on the mace meta... (very minor spoilers ahead)
Most things in the swamp biome have weakness to blunt, specifically sellies, oozes, and leeches. (Though I personally prefer the spear vs. leeches so I can throw it without going into the water.) The rest of the swamp mobs at least have no resistance to blunt damage. (Except the abominations? I don’t remember.)
Long story short, mace is the optimal choice for everything up through the swamp biome. After that, it becomes important to mix up damage types depending on the situation.
I think the bronze knife is basically a waste of resources. They are fast, but have low hit points, unless you are backstabbing.
I actually like the bronze atgir, although you have to monitor your stamina closely. The atgir is killer for trolls, the secondary attack will usually stagger them, and then poke, poke, poke... and other things if they are attacking in groups (secondary attack).
Definitely make the bronze axe! Upgrade to a finewood bow. And, you can make portals with finewood!!!
Absolutely agree! The atgier is a game changer when dealing with trolls and large groups of enemies. Using the middle mouse special attack staggers many mobs and attacks multiple ones at the same
time.
During and after bronze age the game just keeps getting exponentially better, there's so much more to discover and so many more improvements for the base to make, you're in for a treat mate.
One thing I would prioritise is a fermenter - that will allow you to make potions, including healing ones. Good to have those handy during combat.
Healing potions would be a game changer.
If you choose to craft a bronze buckler, you’ll need to start practicing parrying. Bucklers have low block armor but also have a high parry bonus, so they can block much more damage when they parry.
I definitely need to learn who to parry properly.
now you have unlocked a very important element and which will make your life easier which are the portals look in the hammers the misc section
and another even more important thing look in crafting to make the cauldron and the mead ketill
can't wait to have the portals. Travelling is a grind at times, but also nice because you get to see the world.
Some more tips:
1. Don't bother with the bronze pickaxe. Antler pickaxe will satisfy your needs up until the end of the next age after bronze. It'll save you from unnecessary grind.
2. Cut some pines. It'll unlock more stuff to craft.
3. New upgrades and crafting stations in the "crafting" section of yoir build menu.
4. You've unlocked one of the most useful things in the game - portal. You can find it under "Misc" in your build menu.
5. Build a cart. It'll help you transport bigger loads of ire from the mine to the base. Also in the "Misc" section.
I'll add to this comment, because it hits all the high notes. But, to reduce the grind use the hoe to make a road between your base and a copper node then mine ALL the copper. The nodes extend well underground. Load the copper into your cart and profit. If you use it sparingly one copper node will get you through the bronze age. Because it's your first playthrough you'll likely need two nodes.
Build a Karve (boat) and test out sailing. You can scout tin deposit much easier in a boat.
Thanks @ExMachinaAnimata 👍
Can't wait to start Sailing,
Wood depends on the tree. Some trees require stronger axes. Enjoying your adventures! The grind is real, don't let it discourage you.
Thanks @mikal4452. Glad you're enjoying the videos.
Thank you so much for this playthrough Caster! It's inspired me to play again. I'm enjoying watching you discover the game and not just do an optimal speedrun, so I hope you can avoid stressing about mistakes and save the stress for the trolls. I'm going to echo some of the other comments and say you should definitely think more of infrastructure, even outside your base. Tame the land as you explore, make some roads and clear obstacles in places you pass frequently. I always have my hoe with me, being able to quickly clear a flat combat arena or make yourself a dirt pillar ahead of a fight makes all the difference. Also, no spoilers but you -will- want your hoe with you in the next biome. Thanks again!
@ixtable you're welcome, I'm glad you enjoy the videos. I'm really enjoying the game so far! So immersive. I'll do my best to tame the land and build up my base. I'm enjoying discovering the base building mechanics etc
TIP: Bronze pick not priority. Keep using antler pick as they can be repaired at the the mining site with a simple workbench. If you use a bronze pick you will need to go back to base to repair.
Personally I never craft the bronze pickaxe, I find that it is useless, it is just a waste of resources.
Thanks @scorepro5059
When it comes to copper. the copper nodes are BIG. Dig around them and down. Sometimes you'll find part will be deeper down than you can dig. I LOVE the knife. You haven't gotten my favorite early knife yet that I have seen anyway. I call that smelting bit the smelter dance.
Keep checking the crafting build menu, infrastructure is key in Valheim! Fun episode! 😀👍👍
Thanks @seadog8807
The first things i go for once copper and bronze comes into play is: Knife, pickaxe, axe, mace and buckler (i try to get the shield upgraded as soon as possible as you can parry a troll with a lvl 3 buckler) - that is what i go for. Everyone does this differently so all depends on your playstyle :) - so glad to hear that you are enjoying the game so far, the bronze age is where allot of people drop the game due to the intense grind that it can be like you described.
I'm not giving up on this now. I'm going to do a lot of the grind in the background so you don't have to watch it.
This is more of a personal preference than a rule, but Fire Arrows are incredibly useful for most of the early to mid game. I never bother crafting anything other than wood or fire arrows until I can start crafting Frost Arrows, which are incredible late game. I'll use the poison arrows or metal arrowheads if I find them in a chest but rarely if ever do I make them. Fire arrows are so cheap and versatile. Great against trolls because they're weak to pierce and can take critical hits to the head while they slowly burn.
Frost arrows aren’t late game, it’s literally mid game, since it’s the 4th of 7 biome
I use fire arrows until I get needle arrows.
As others have said, the copper knife and bronze sword are not usually a first choice for more seasoned players, but that's the fun of a new game, you often learn more by just going for what you fancy, rather than what is optimal, as you advance more and get to know the mechanics of different enemies, you then work out what is optimal for you and the way you play. After all it's your game, we are just along for the ride 😉The bronze axe is ofc a great choice, but what else you need is the cultivator (to start a farm), the cooking pot (to make better foods from what you can farm) and the fermenter to make potions. Imagine if you could have much better foods giving you more health and stamina along with useful potions you could use during a fight!!!
I know I said earlier it's your game, but please, I am begging you, because it hurts my brain, my eyes and my throat (when I scream at the screen) - when you die and respawn at your bed, take a few moments to sit down and get the rested buff, BEFORE running out to do combat again
😅🙂👍
Finewood aquired, can't wait until you find the cauldron, you'll praise Odin for this gift and make the grind worth it! 🙌🏻
👍🙂
Maces - good defensive weapon, knockback gets enemies off you
Sword - does better damage because it does full damage to multiple enemies (when you hit more than one thing at at time). Other weapons split their damage (and can split damage into trees, walls, and rocks wasting some)
Axe - You need the Axe for wood - not quite as good damage as Mace or Sword because its good for utility
Atgier - unique weapon with big AOE attack that staggers enemies but uses a lot of stamina
Knives and Spears also work but are more niche.
Basically nearly all weapons in Valheim are well balanced, they just have different playstyles. You have to experiment and see what works for you.
Most people skip Bronze Armor, Troll is nearly as good and Bronze Heavy armor slows you down a bit.
Thanks for the tips @trengilly01. I really like the Troll Armour and prefer to be light on my feet rather than bogged down with heavy armour.
I was going to give you a few tips, but they were all mentioned already ahah
I'M ENJOYING THE SERIES
Good luck on your 13-Hour Shift today.
Cheers!
🙂👍
Love watching playthroughs of this game. So much great content ahead for you!
Thanks @MrGraveSlice. The game has caught my fascination.
@ It’s an incredible project. Started with just 14 devs if I remember correctly. Perfectly paced, and the difficulty is spot-on. You’ll notice that not a single resource goes to waste throughout your play-through. This game has the potential to have a massive release with 1.0 and get in a GOTY conversation, hopefully
Nice, looking forward to seeing how ur getting on
🙂👍
waiting patiently for more episodes!
I know losing the footedge hurts, but i kinda love the more edited videos, where you show us some cool bits here and there and cut out the boring grinding
Good to know. Thanks @YourFaceGodDamint
Well it's a bummer you lost some videos because we couldn't see all you did, but I'm excited for you having reached the bronze age !!! Getting new and better stuff is so rewarding. Congratulations on the trolls !!! I love watching your videos. Keep up the great work !!! P.s....you are brave doing this adventure alone. Or maybe I'm just a chicken...🤣🤣🤣
Thanks @judiannegoodrich4562. I'm glad you enjoy the videos. 🤣🤣 It's only because I don't know any better 😅
Probably have saved the copper from the knife to make more bronze for the sword.
When you get the Karve, you can go looking for these floating island things called Leviathan. On the backs of the Leviathan you can find these barnacles to get the iron tier knife. That knife when fully upgraded will be one of the best weapons you can get until the mountains
Looking forward to finding a Leviathan.
blunt atgeir (mace) will help against skelleton, atgeir (atgeir) against everything, pointy atgeir (spear) will help against troll, slashy atgeir (sword) i don't know, other slashy atgeir (axe) will help cutting the uncutable tree, home atgeir will help farming plant, short pointy atgeir (knife) will do massive crit damage also butcher variant is usefull.
Atgeir for the win!
With some berries patience and no fire too close you can get some help from the meadow wildlife (you will need two for it to be really usefull, you also found a runestone about it in a previous video), also make them a barn with a roof to protect them from raid.
thanks for this @fleursetvelo2561
"Bronze grind"!? Oh you sweet summer child. Wait for the iron grind :D (Rule 1 of Valheim: "If you think you've got enough iron, you're only half way there - if that"
😂
In general, the mace will end up being the "best" weapon in regards to single hit weapons. I prefer sword when dealing with multiple enemies as you have three hits in sequence. Yes, the bronze axe is critical, and I will also agree that the bronze pickaxe is not needed. The iron pickaxe will be needed in the mountains. You will get ores slightly faster using the bronze pickaxe. Make sure and level up your gear as much as you can before battling the next boss (including your bow).
👍 thanks @hilltigger
Your hammer can be a powerful weapon ... fire arrows not only source of fire. A few items can be built without a workbench. Beasties can't jump. Choose what to fight & where. Pick a great tool for base defense ( think castle defenses). Yellow damage numbers is extra damage , grey numbers is resistant. Oh and store weapons to move better .. except knives. Read weapon details for stamina cost for use & movement impact. But for Odin's sake, dump your inventory! A day lasts 20 mins - can see how long food lasts to determine how much need to carry. .. can set a bed spawn spot without a fire. Enjoy discovery. Loved it what is that? I don't know? Kill it kill it! I laughed sooo - you have right viking attitude. ( over 2500 hours in game)
😅 thanks @jelliqal
This is only the first grind level, after going to the next biome, you’ll going to start the official grind fest for the material that allows you to build/make
😱😅👍 I'm looking forward to it.
Equip your building hammer and have a look at what you can build
👍🙂
So much new stuff when u hit bronze.. be sure to get a cart on the go ASAP.. it'll help the mining grind a lot 🙂
This is the way. Thanks @battlehaggis4421.
Fun video . . . making nice progression. Don't worry about the missed footage . . . its a long game and won't matter.
Thanks 👍
You do know that when mining copper it is best to first dig around and expose the entire deposit then mine the copper. This way you can grab the maximum copper available in the deposit. 🤠
👍🙂
That is sooo tedious, though! I do it anyway, but I hate it. Worst part of the game.
@@kythian I find it a relaxing experience when paired with some Slayer blasting away in the background.
3:04 Yeah thats why I could never use a controller for Valheim. I need to be able to keep moving while I change things around in my inventory.
This does hurt a lot. I've never played on Keyboard and Mouse, it's so alien to me.
@CasterPenn no worries at all my friend :) I’m very much enjoying your play-through so far!
You can use the hoe to beat the grass down below the floorboards
thanks @L0rdfluff
I really enjoy your untainted first view at this beautiful game, but why on a controller? imho mouse and keyboard would bring you a ton of mobility and better reaction and quality of life while shifting through your gear etc. And as guessed by others, learn to parry ;)
Thanks @LupusDerb. I have never played my a mouse and keyboard before, so it's completely alien to me. Quite a few people have mentioned this, so I might have to give it a go.
bronze ax and then the bronze atgier
Thanks @sherwpinkhair
Don't waste bronze on Arrows . . . just don't. Only slightly better than the flint arrows and you need all the bronze for other things.
👍 Thanks @trengilly01
