A change that I don’t see a lot of people talk about is Vader’s line “Bring my shuttle” changed to “Alert my star destroyer to prepare for my arrival”

    • @morgothfromangband6082
      @morgothfromangband6082 4 роки тому +36

In the German version that's a huge problem because they had a completely different voice for that changed line when they dubbed it.

    • @SRETRODUDE
      @SRETRODUDE 4 роки тому +45

I'm guessing the reason for that is Lucas added an exterior shot of the landing pad with the shuttle already there. So it would've been like:
      Vader: Bring my shuttle.
Stormtrooper: Way ahead of you sir.
Vader: The force is strong with you.

The scene after that drives me nuts. The scene when Vader gets back to his Star Destroyer. It is an unused arrival scene at the Death Star from Return of the Jedi, but just from the side angle camera. Its like, hey George millions of us real fans can see this was from Return of the Jedi.

I dont care about the line change as much as I do the added clips from RotJ added in right after. They break up the pacing of the movie and only add confusion.

I don't know if it was intentional, but I just love how much frustration is on "Bring my shuttle" line. It's like he's so pissed that he made this entire plan to bring his one and only known child to his side, and the kid just jumped. In the new version it's like, "Eh, whatevs".

Phantom Sidious it was really impressive how they opened up cloud city with just one added flying scene and putting in some windows, it showed what you could do with clever cgi without interfering with the scene or standing out like a saw thumb. Having the proper emperor in _Empire_ is great, but the changed dialog in that scene is probably my most hated change. I don't like that apparently Vader didn't know it was Luke Skywalker he was after and the weight of the scene between Vader and Luke is severely diminished when it turns out that the emperor was the one who said _"search your feelings, you know it to be true"_ and Vader just copied it like it was a cool one-liner.

I like that they enlarged Jabbas front door. Before it looked like the door was the same size outside and inside. But now you can REALLY see that it is smaller when you get in. This is very important to show that this is NOT the Tardis or other mystical rooms that are larger on the inside. No, Jabbas palace is smaller. The effect with the repeating pattern on the door is also a nice nod to John Knoll, the writer of Rogue one and founder of Adobe Photoshop (where you can make this effect by using the clone stamp a bit sloppy). Great changes that I don't know how I could live without.

Yeah that last one hurts, thank goodness for the De-Specialized editions. I remember after the initial Specialized Editions really hating the CG creatures which even then I knew wouldn’t age well at all, I remember hating them changing the Han/Greedo scene. Then Lucas changed them again and added ghost Hayden which I remember thinking “why is he young? When Obi Wan died he didn’t turn into Ewan Mcgregor. He turned good at the end, he was redeemed, that should be the ghost version”.
Lucas’s changes had damaged a trilogy I had loved. Then 2011 came and he did it again, he changed Vader’s redemption to have him do a dramatic “Nooooooo”, all to connect it to his first appearance as Vader at the end of Revenge of the Sith (also an over dramatic schlocky scene). He took the most pivotal scene in Return of the Jedi (arguably the whole trilogy) and screwed it up as well.
Ugh I hate them, as they are now I hate the Star Wars trilogy. Again thank goodness there are things like the De-Specialized editions and others like it.

Clone Squadron Radio that’s a good reason to like it, and it is very subjective. But for me personally I think that the title of “Return of the Jedi” refers to Vader becoming Anakin again, so his force ghost should reflect the last time he was good, which is when he kills Palpatine

In my opinion the Star Wars Radio Drama handled the Mos Eisley scene the best. The deleted scene is put back in, except the character Han interacts with isn't Jabba, but "Heater," one of the Hutt's lieutenants. Heater's voice has a posh British accent, capable of going from warm and friendly one moment to cold and ruthless the next (mad props to the VA). Not only does the scene make more sense in-universe (Jabba's the head of a galactic crime syndicate, he's not going to bother showing up in person to threaten every two-bit smuggler who fails to pay on time), but it preserves the original mystery of who and what Jabba is.

    2. Extra shots of Slave I

I don't mind the Vader yelling no addition to ROTJ. It adds a level of parallelism to his no at the end of ROTS. In ROTS, he felt like he had nothing left and the viewers believe he is completely lost to the dark side. In ROTJ, he knows that he has a son that he needs to protect and he hasn't completely given in to the dark side. I also like to think of it as Vader's response to Palpatine saying that Vader and Luke were his. But I understand why some people dislike it because it isn't exactly necessary.

    My three worst changes:
    1. Jabba the Hutt in ANH for the reasons you mentioned.
    2. Jedi Rocks for the reasons you mentioned.
    3. Hayden Christensen replacing Sebastian Shaw in ROTJ: This isn't a dig on Hayden at all, but Sebastian Shaw IS older Anakin to me, and not just replacing his one scene that he gets to play the character as a true Jedi without Vader's burns and scars, but also doing it after Shaw passed away just feels like a huge FU to the actor.
    - Dishonorable Mention: Greedo shooting first, because I really hate it, but it doesn't quite make the top three for me.
    My three best changes:
    1. Ian Mcdiarmid as the Emperor in ESB because continuity, plain and simple.
    2. Victory Celebration just feels like a better ending song for the trilogy. It suits the bittersweet victory feeling that the ending scene has.
    3. The new effects for the ships and space battles look much better. The new effects look pretty bad on the physical sets, but the new ship and space battle effects (Particularly the Battle of Yavin) look really good.
    - Honorable Mention: Han charging into a hangar full of stormtroopers, because it makes that scene so damn hilarious, when it used to be akward that the stormtroopers he's chasing just kinda turn around and start chasing Han again.

Regarding the Luke/Vader fight of ROTJ, If Lucas had stayed in charge, and keeping in line with the new Vader comics, I'm most certain subsequent Lucas cuts would have included the voices or images of Padme when Vader sees how the emperor torturing Luke, maybe even a vision of Padme giving birth. OMG, I hope this comment gets cursed.

Thank you for keeping the true originals alive in this way and informing the young and newer fans why doing so is important. You've let them know that the versions they more than likely watched as their introduction into SW were the revisionist versions. And not the real thing.
However, your list needed to be much longer because there are so many more horrible changes that were made. The most abhorrent being replacing Sebastian Shaw's force ghost with Hayden Christensen's.
Here's why that swap is a logic break and the worst change on multiple fronts:
    - Everyone who starts their SW journey by watching Ep.4 (which seems to be the large majority over those who start with Ep.1) has no idea who he is upon his appearance and immediately gets confused. I've seen many reaction videos where people literally say, " Wait, who was that next to Ben and Yoda? ". And if they do figure it out it takes them a bit. The swap still being jarring either way which should in no way be the effect on the audience from the 2nd to very last scene in the film closing the chapter on a trilogy that took decades to set up.
    - Luke's character probably wouldn't have recognized him. And at the very least would've reacted much differently than just the immediate knowing smile he gave.
    - The last time Anakin was redeemed and himself was when Luke took his mask off in ROTJ so *that's* the person we should've seen as a force ghost.
    - It was completely disrespectful of Lucas to cut Sebastian Shaw's final performance in his last theatrical film appearance before he died.
    - Shaw's heartfelt, memorable performance of giving us a warm, loving fatherly smile as he looked upon his son one last time was replaced with Hayden's detached, blank, creepy stalker leer.
I believe Hayden said that sequence was actually shot during a costume fitting. And Lucas had no intention of using the footage as it ended up. And had he (Hayden) known where it would eventually appear he would've given a much different and better performance. This is tragic on many levels.
The fans got the DCFU to release the Snider Cut. Let that be an inspiration to get the same of the original theatrical OT from Lucasfilm. #ReleaseTheRealOT

I can see where you're coming from on these points, and a couple of them I agree with, but as a whole I do not. I think that at the very least, on paper, it makes sense for Anakin Skywalker to be there as a young man. He was only around for a moment as an old man and if he sees himself as Anakin Skywalker again in that moment then it makes sense he would manifest himself as the young Anakin Skywalker in his ghost form. I think Luke would be able to tell who he was given the context without issue. What I do agree with is that it creates some confusion for the viewers. I think the idea works, it was just handled in a flawed way.

@@godofthecripples1237 Thanks for the response. Usually, any pushback I get on this is nothing but angry, aggressively dumb, and hopelessly clueless. But at least you were able to say why you disagreed in a better way.
However, what type of force ghost characters become in the SW universe has no relation to how they "see themselves". Self-perception simply doesn't play any role in it whatsoever.
Anakin died as an older man. And was redeemed as an older man. So THAT'S who Luke and we should've seen when he became a force ghost.
The overwhelming number of people I find defending younger Anakin as an FG are those who grew up with the revisionist versions of the OT who never saw these films are they originally were for decades. A trilogy that began in 1977 and remained intact for 20 years - only being altered in 1997 to create the "special (revisionist) editions".
These people simply don't have any frame of reference due to never seeing true/real originals.
Although most of the changes in ESB are widely accepted as the best from alterations of the OT films, no one else seems to prefer the Anakin FG swap or most of the other changes to the OT in any significant numbers.
In fact, it's the exact opposite with most of the pre-97 SW audience not liking the majority of the changes.
So I really can't articulate any further why changing Sebastian Shaw's FG to Hayden Christiansen was so egregious and on multiple fronts more than what I already explained in this and my previous comment.
If you still don't see why swapping Sebastian out for a younger actor is a problem, there's nothing else I can say that will change your mind.
However, one thing you may agree on hopefully is how it's not right for Lucas (and now Disney) to not make the true original trilogy widely available to the public.
By eliminating that choice, it forces people who want to see the OT to only be able to consume the revisionist versions - which completely dismisses and disregards how millions of people knew the OT for decades.
      This is entirely unacceptable.
At the very least, they should make both versions of the OT available so people can decide for themselves which they'd prefer. This would allow everyone to have what they wanted regardless of which version of the OT they'd choose.
Individual fans have taken the matter into their own hands and created no less than 3 HD unaltered OT trilogy editions (Despecialized, Silver Screen Edition, Project 4K77). So a large multi-billion dollar company like Disney doing the same would be more than achievable.
Either way, there's simply no excuse for why they should eliminate choice and keep the unaltered versions from the public any longer. And there was really no justification for it in the first place.

@@boomieboo I do agree that Star Wars fans are usually assholes, and I also agree that the true original versions of the films should be readily available somewhere.
However, you said that self-perception has nothing to do with how someone manifests as a ghost. This has never been stated.
George Lucas himself has said that he felt Anakin should appear young since that's when Anakin originally died. This would imply that self-perception does have something to do with it. And even if it doesn't, it's some sort of weird Cosmic third party perception, the point holds true nonetheless.
He was arguably Anakin for about 3 minutes upon his death. His ghost displaying as the young Anakin Skywalker in his prime as a Jedi is a good way to show this.
The problem is just that watching the originals without watching the prequels doesn't convey this, because you wouldn't know who that young man is. This could easily be fixed by handling the scene slightly differently, throwing in some dialogue from Obi-Wan, but we don't get that. I would say that's the issue.

Star Wars (1997) and Return of the Jedi (1983) had editors, writers and even a movie director (Richard Marquand). 1997 Special Edition, 2004 DVD, 2001 Blu Ray and so on had too much technology, too much ambition, too little soul.

I was surprised that the Greedo shooting thing wasn't in this, but in terms of 'most hated', I actually think I agree with you here. Star Wars is already quite outlandish and silly at times, which can put people off, and I think these changes compound that a ton, aside from being completely unnecessary and impeding the flow/atmosphere of the film. My next least favourite changes, if I remember correctly, are the 'Yub-nub' song being replaced (nostalgic, humble and heart-warming ending) and the Greedo thing I mentioned before (for reasons already explored in loads of detail). Thanks for interesting video!

Hey! We have the same worst three changes! Except Vader's "no!" Was way worse than added Jabba in my opinion...
Jabba ruined a mystery, and is redundant... But Vader took an amazing scene and told the cinematography that they didn't do their job right, and it just talks down to the audience. Like, "now, boys and girls, what's Darth Vader going to do?!"
I always tell this story, but i remember telling my mom after watching ROTJ for the 2nd or 3rd time, "i cant believe that they were able to convey so much emotion with a mask that doesn't even move"

That "No" was a big middle finger to a lot of people. It was THE culmination of everything in the saga. a place where you could forget about all the goofy changes made before it and just take in the raw emotion of it all. It should have been untouchable.
