I prayed one night to know which bible to read. First thing next morning at work someone asked me to sort through a box of unwanted items left at the office by an ex-employee. The last item in the box was a KJV with gold leaf pages and special leather bound zipped cover. When I unzipped and opened it, the bookmark was at the beginning of The Book of Luke, and my name is Luke. The most special gift I have ever been gifted in my Life, I will cherish it forever😇

Not all Christians do. Afrikaans people's Bible is directly translated from the Dutch Statenvertalen which was directly translated from the Greek and Hebrew sources.

Yeah...and here exactly is one of the main problems.
The text (at least the First Five Books) is meant to be a very specific way.. You can't just flip flop and change stuff around because you like the way it sounds better. That's such nonsense..
Actually, they wanted it to be right. But you can say what is right in a way that doesn’t accommodate the human mouth, vocal cords, or ear. The translators took pains to be accurate in all of the above.

A nice thing to read is the translators text "to the reader" in the beginning, recommended! Nice insights and great to get a window into the thinking of those days, of course it´s from the standpoint of very educated men and believers. You would be astounded tough how deep their thinking was back then, i feel almost stupid reading it.

For those wanting a more detailed look at the King James bible, there is a book entitled: "God's Secretaries: The Making of the King James Bible". Well written, with a lot of information about the times and society King James I lived in. This was also the time of William Shakespear. A time when the English language was very poetic. That is reflected in both Shakespear and the KJV Bible. It is the beauty of that language that makes the King James Bible, and one of the reasons it is still used today. Forget the translation accuracy, listen to the words and style. You don't have to be a Christian to enjoy it.
That's a common misconception that the KJV was written in contemporary English. It wasn't. That's the language of the spirit world. King James wrote a book and the sound and spelling is nothing like the KJV Bible.
@@oriraykai3610 Stranhgely enough, the King James Version is very much like Shakespeare. He was writing plays at the same time as the KJV was being written. So yes, it was written in the language of the day.

The early editions of the King James had many typographical errors (mostly spelling and punctuation), the corrections were made and the King James Bible went on to alter the course of human history and today, 400 years and over 200 modern versions later, it still reigns paramount in spite of the Roman church's and modern apostates efforts to replace it.
@@floydgrissom1402 just trying to set the record straight (help). Btw, the kjv was forced upon the people ("appointed to be read in churches") and the previous bibles (especially Geneva) got banned. Even today, the kjv is still pressed upon people. And there were many editions of the kjv which had typographical errors. It's not like it was just a few. Kjv was catholic as well. There were birthdays of the saints within it's first pages (before the start of Genesis).

Your the first person that I know of that ever referred to the KJV as a catholic Bible. Ask your priest if the KJV is a catholic Bible and see what he says.

King James sales are in the billions, it is by far the top selling book in history.
It has also stood the test of time (400 years and counting).
That did not happen by force or coercion.
The people who promote the new versions don't read them, if they did they would switch back to the KJV.

King James did not like what a few of the notes said. You can look this up on wikipedia. And if you don't think the kjv is catholic, then go get a 1611 facismile and look through that one. When I say typographical errors, I'm referring to editions that had printer mistakes. It may not be how the 1769 reads today, but they've been there in the past. There was the "vinegar bible" (supposed to be vineyard for the parable of the vineyard)-this one also got called the "Baskett full of errors" _, there was one where the word was supposed to be "filled", but it ended up being "killed". The He/She bibles. Another where the word was supposed to be "princes", but it ended up being "printers", and still another said "the unrighteous shall inherit the kingdom of God". One point about the 'popularity' of the KJV. By the King's decree, the KJV was the single Authorized version of the Bible to be read in the Church of England. Which essentially said it was the only Bible allowed in use. So popular or not, it was the Bible in use by the CoE until this century, and that 'authorization' may still be in effect.

Citizen by birth - nor accept the Church of England, with the King (or I presume Queen) of England as final theological authority. The main problem with the KJV is the English language has changed seriously in 400 years and those enamored of the KJV read it and think their mistaken impressions are those of God.

While commonly called the King James Bible, its proper title is the Authorized Version as it was the only version authorized to be used in English churches. It still is legally - Parliament is behind the times.

But I would argue the issue here is serious enough to be taken seriously. Anyone mocking genuine faith in God certainly displays our depravity, and need for a savior. And it's always interesting to me, that when someone mocks faith in God -- it reveals more about them than it does the one they're trying to mock. I don't believe a small youtube comment would affect you in the slightest... but I sure wish you would take the issue of eternity as serious as it is. There is a great book called "God's Secretaries" that describes in detail the creation of the King James Bible.
(Spoiler Alert: There is much about this process that was not passed down to history.)
Sometimes one translator would make different translation with another translator because they have to consider what is the meaning of the translation against word-by-word translating which sometimes include old words that are not usually used in the modern times.

@@innerspacesurfer The church (whether Catholic, Protestant or Orthodox) was actually, for the longest time plagued by government propaganda no matter who was in charge. I'm a Christian, but I think the long history of church and state being intertwined had adverse effects on both, not that the Catholic church were ever on the right track. Sure, I respect them for laying down the foundation for Christianity, but they completely ignore the teachings of Jesus and Paul in spite of claiming to be all about them. In any case, all churches are plagued by politics even without direct government influence and intervention. Churches are organizations run by people, many of whom have clashing ideas on how things should be run. Paul mentions this in his letters and it's still going on to this day except worse, since we have church organizations that span multiple or even countless churches and have their own governing bodies to keep things in line.

I grew up on the King James Bible. This is so interesting!everything touched by man is open to interpretation, and in my opinion, religion is like that. People mold the words to fit their agenda.
It doesn't even matter anymore folks. We live in the age of increased knowledge and can use computers and internet to pursue the Greek and Hebrew text. If you own an NIV (I certainly wouldn't) you can still check the Greek,Aramaic, Hebrew even Latin. See what the Word is really trying to tell you.

They mostly followed an earlier translation done by William Tyndale, a guy who was murdered for translating the bible into English. Tyndale had written a letter condemning Henry VIII's attempt to get a divorce, and enraged the king. Naturally, king James wasn't going to let Tyndale's name be put in the credits section.

Aside from the lies you are telling, you are supporting Tyndale's murder. You have not once said that his killing was unjust, or that killing people for religious "heresy" is immoral. Let me ask you, do you want the Roman Catholic to return to its old practices? Do you want indulgences brought back? It looks like you are anxious to bring back the murder of people who disagree with the RCC. Don't even mention that some early Protestants killed people they disagreed with because it took a couple hundred years for Protestants to stop doing a number of bad things that they had inherited from the RCC. I condemn the killing of heretics, that includes the ones killed by Protestants. It is much better to debate a heretic and show how his teachings defy the bible, than to make him a martyr to his followers.
The RCC had a strict policy against lay people possessing a copy of the bible, even an official Latin version. The RCC kept on taking bibles, especially common language translations, from their own members until the late 1800s. Local priests would take them if they heard that one of their church members had one.
As for the supposed errors that Tyndale introduced in his translation of the bible, the Tyndale translation was used as the backbone of all later English translations because it was so well respected. The bishop of London that you hold up as the expert who condemned Tyndale's translation, was a devoted Roman Catholic and was never going to have any opinion on a translation of the bible into English except to say that it was bad. The RCC profited from keeping the bible away from the people. King Henry VIII liked Tyndale when Tyndale had written that God put kings in charge of their own countries, and not popes. But Henry changed his mind about Tyndale after Tyndale wrote that Henry was wrong to be seeking an annulment. Henry was in a bind, he needed a lever to pry himself out from under the pope's power over him, and Tyndale had provided it, but Tyndale had also undermined his wish to get rid of his current wife. Henry offered Tyndale a deal. Henry told Tyndale he could have a cushy job in his court if he agreed to his annulment. Tyndale said he'd go with the annulment, but Henry must publish an English bible. Tyndale knew that putting the bible into the people's hands was far more important than the king's bedroom. But Tyndale's request for an English bible was too much for Henry and the deal fell through. Henry believed that the Latin bible was the only one that was right. Henry was still in the grips of his Catholic upbringing. Strangely, a year before Tyndale was killed, Henry decided that an English bible was a good idea and he had one published. The man Henry put in charge of the job was Myles Coverdale. Coverdale's bible used Tyndale's translation as its backbone.
King James himself is Catholic and protected the Catholics from persecution and allowed them to continue their Catholic worship. His mother, a devout Catholic was his biggest influence in his life. King James may have led people to believe he was a Protestant but actually a closeted Catholic who was known for being the protector of Catholics. The irony of it all isn’t it when they killed Tyndale.

The issues he listed were printing errors not translation issues. While the King James Version's English is dated, it does very accurately reflect the original languages. Many of the words are considered archaic today, but they are very good choices to translate the Hebrew or Greek. While not absolutely perfect, it is just about the most accurate translation of the traditional Hebrew and Greek texts in English. But if you can't get past the old English the New King James or English Standard Version are good translations also.
You mean Modern English. To call the King James Bible old English is misleading, if not being a false witness altogether.

As to your comments about my use of "old English" and "archaic", I suppose it's fair to characterize those terms as a bit sloppy (though I'd argue "false witness" is a bit severe). My use of old English was intended more to describe the "Ye Oldy" feeling many describe as a reason for not liking the King James Version. And I'm willing to admit that it wasn't the most accurate or clear way to describe the English used in the King James Bible.
To answer the question specifically about the modern English equivalent of "thee", "thou" and "ye" I would say that the use of the word "you" is their "equivalent". We use "you" as a plural (ye) and a singular (thee/thou) and rely on context to determine the difference (or we add "guys" or "all" to it). While the "ye's" and "thee's" may detract from the modern readability to some today , they do accurately aid the reader in identifying when and plural was used in the original languages.
Latin was used as well back in that day.

Brief note about "Ye Oldy". When you see "Ye Olde" such and such, that "Y" is actually a stand-in for the English letter "thorn" (þ), which has the "th" sound. So when something says "Ye Olde", it is actually "Þe Olde" or "The Olde".

Regarding now the sound of the King James Bible when compared to modern Bible versions. "Thou" and "Ye" were still used in Bibles until between the 1901 American Standard Version, which had those words, and the 1952 Revised Standard Version which omitted those words. However, "Thou" and "Ye" were used in versions published after that year, though it was far less common. So why did those words get removed? They actually fell out of use during the 1500s and 1600s. It was not in common speech. Yet it was retained at least until the 1901 ASV. Why was it retained? Because it was accurate. It was a correct translation of the Hebrew and Greek words, and so conveyed the same message which those languages conveyed. Now as to why they were removed.
No, not because it sounded like "old English", though that is the excuse you may hear. It was already "old" when the 1611 King James Bible was published. The reason is because the language is "holy". Holy meaning "whole" (as in, "complete", as well as "in full health"), "intact", "uncorrupted", "undefiled", "without imperfection", "separate from sin", "sacred" (as in "sanctified"). Which has two meanings in this context.
1. The scripture is holy and therefore perfect and entire, wanting nothing:
1 Peter 1:23, 25 KJV
"Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever."
"But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you."
The holy scriptures are incorruptible, so that the words therein cannot be broken (John 10:35 KJV) or dissolved (2 Peter 3:11-12 KJV cf. Matthew 24:35 KJV), and so they endure forever.
2. The scripture is holy and therefore separate from the world:
Isaiah 55:8-9, 11 KJV
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."
"So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it."
Those who are of the world cannot understand the word of God (Romans 3:10-12 KJV) because their hearts are against God (Matthew 13:14-15 KJV), and instead of seeking God they follow after their own lusts (John 8:42-47 KJV). If only they would repent towards God, they would then understand his truth (Daniel 9:13 KJV, Proverbs 2:1-11 KJV).
So the idea that the holy scriptures can be then be made unholy in order for worldly people to understand it, is against sense. Because, only by the word of God being holy and incorruptible can it make one born again, as I quoted in 1 Peter 1:23 above.

Now in regards to "modern" equivalents to thee, thou, you, and ye: "you" is not an equivalent. Each of those four words have different meanings, which are not maintained within the one word "you". And on top of that, the King James Bible distinguishes between "thou" and "ye" and "ye all". So if you use "you all" for "ye", then what do you do to distinguish "you all" and "ye all"?
Read these passages in the ESV, and tell me who these passages are talking about and to, using only the context. Then we'll see if the ESV or KJV is more clear, and whether any meaning has changed, like plurality or the grammatical person being referred to:
John 3:7 ESV
Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
Matthew 26:64 ESV
Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

And for bonus points, if you are willing, read Romans 11:24-25 in the ESV then the KJV, and let me know who you think is being spoken to. You may need to read the whole chapter. I hope that you don't cheat and use sources outside of the text to find your answer.

My personal position on Bible versions is a KJV position. I don't believe the KJV was "re-inspired" as some do. Thus I'm not truly a KJV only guy. I'm more of a Textus Receptus only guy, which means the KJV is realistically the only option in English. And as you mentioned, after having studied Greek and Hebrew you just gotta love the the accuracy of the KJV.

The King James Bible has had more impact on the English language than any other literary work. It has been the most accepted and beloved translation of millions of Christians and is still reigning king as the most prominent translation today. The King James Bible is still the primary or only translation being used by approximately 55% of the Christian population; this dwarfs the second most used translation, the New International Version, which only has a measly 19%. No other Bible has come close to matching the accuracy or beauty of the language found within the King James Bible; religious or not, one truly can not over state the lasting impact this translation has had and continues to have on the English speaking world.

Most popular for protestants, the Catholic versions have several translations. Remember there are 1.6 billion Catholics and offshoots of Catholicism. While there's about 700 million Protestants. Unless you belong to that group that considers only yourselves as Christians.

They were then written down a long time afterwards in Greek. Then St Jerome translated it into Latin. Then almost 1,200 yers later it was translated into English. Mind you there are not original copies of this book. So the KJV is a translation of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy. Which is then translated from another copy of another copy of another copy. And after all those years the English translation is the most reliable? Also you make an extremely ridiculous statement by claiming English is the most complete language. It’s merely a lingua Franca. It does not have the abilities of older or more sophisticated languages and lacks the simplicity of some newer ones as well.

I always remember a funny encounter I had about the King James version. I was talking with someone about the better translation available from the ABS Standard version translation. This is a much more accurate translation of the Greek. This individual (member some conservative sect) said that if King James English was good enough for Jesus then it should be good enough for us. Goes to show there there are still many illiterate people even in the 20th cent (time of the conversation). Yea verily I say unto you, I stil laugh at this conversation. Made my day!

When door to door preachers knock on your door wanting to preach from the Bible ask them which version. You them have to patiently explain how it has been rewrote several times, usually there out of there quick without having to be rude.

The 1631 (and many other kjvs) having typos is common knowledge for those who are not kjvos and done a bit of research. For example, I already knew about the "wicked bible" that said "thou shalt commit adultery", just not about it also saying God had a great a**.

@@danielboro2000 for Erasmus, Hebrew and Greek manuscripts may have been used, but mainly to correct what he perceived as errors in the Latin vulgate. You may be asking about the groundwork for kjv, but Erasmus is somewhat connected to this, what with tyndale using his work in part, and 83% of the kjv of the new testament comes from tyndale's translation. And it's possible Latin was used a bit more in the kjv (as I've seen by translating the Latin vulgate and comparing what I got from Google translate with how the kjv reads in certain places).

I'm reading a book from 1895 and so far the KJV people hated the Jesuits for spreading the word of Christ without the moral values of a true Christian.

@@samarnadra The NIV Bible isn't one of the best translations in the world, it's just a popular translation. Some of the recent publications of the NIV have an incorrect translation of Genesis 1, and if you can't get the first chapter of Genesis right you're doing something wrong. ["Expanse," is what it should say in Genesis 1, not "vault/dome".] This is why the NIV Bible was knocked off my favorites list entirely and replaced with the ESV Bible.

Check your Bible in Isaiah 14:12 the nlt says I how that has fallen morning star the King James accurately says o Lucifer how thou art fallen from heaven, the book of revelation Jesus says I am the root and offspring of David and the bright and morning star. Then take your Bible and open up to Mark 1:2 it says as it is written in Isaiah the prophet....that is actually a quote from Malachi 3:1 and the quote us not found in any of the 66 chapters of Isaiah. Then take your Bible and go to 1 John 5:7 it's actually a quote from 1 John 5:8 and 1 John 5:7 is omitted, the King James says there are 3 that bear witness in heaven, the father, the word, and the Holy Ghost, and these 3 are one. So yes your nlt is wicked and from uts father the devil.

The books of the Bible were canonized by looking at what the vast majority already felt was Canon. These books were from similar time and well regarded but generally not leaned on for any doctrine. So it's really not a problem to remove them

Your comment is correct in a specific sense. ONLY in a specific sense. The make up of the Bible in more or less 'Western' use is different from the Eastern Orthodox and associated churches. It is different in several different nations in the word, who 'use' other books in the make up of the work. All those different finished products had their very own 'committee'.

There are a number of 'configurationc' the most obvious one to 'western' civilization being the difference between the Roman Catholic configuration containing the 'Apocrapha" and the Protestant configuration not containing it. However, there is no difference in meaning between the parts of the Bible corresponding to the other.
Some 'configurations' of the Bible - and I do not keep track of them all - omit some works, like 'James', which is rather demanding. Some omit 'Hebrews' as there is no consensus of the actual author. Some omit 'Revelation' as it was thought to be terrifying. But the essence of the overall message is maintained.
To what 'versions' do you refer?

Simon, you should have told us more about the guys who made up the committee. I was led to understand that maybe 2 of them were familiar with the Hebrew language and almost none could read it. This puts a major damper on a major work.

Simon, that was one of your better videos. Personally, the terms of telling Adam and Eve to replenish the earth tells me that something was here before and destroyed.
The world was alot hotter in the past due to the level of carbon dioxide. However certain plants absorbed so much carbon dioxide before fozzilizing, and that it lead to a global cooler killing off giant reptiles and gave mammals and humans a ideal tempreture to operate in. Sadly, not appreciating the new, more suitable climate, we are digging up these fossils and burning them for fuel, releasing the carbon back into the atmosphere. We could develop solar power and nuclear power but the fossil fuel company has too much clout. So Dinosaurs will be back I guess, if we will be around, that is another matter. The end.
