When I was a kid (here in USA) ALL WE needed was a note from parent or mom to call. When my kids were coming up a note from me wouldn't suffice. I had to get a doctor's note every time.
It is good for emergencies though to have a record of who is actually in n campus at that time. What happens if there is a fire, how do they know you aren’t stick somewhere?
Head of year? SLT? Why are there so many levels of attainment in your schools? The only one supervising us was our teacher. In elementary school it was the same teacher all day. Higher up, one teacher and each of their class periods. There's a Vice Principal and a Principal, but they dealt with trouble students. School secretaries/nurses varied. I think one school I went to had a secretary on a power trip. And she did not have nearly the amount of power yours does. They don't personally oversee everything. They don't affect our grades. They just sign us in and out.

Absolutely same here. There's something really weird about the high school environment (at least, in my experience of an English state school). It's the nit-picky rules and power hungry attitudes that are absolutely disproportionate to the matter in hand, and not actually reflective of real life or the world of work. I've worked in many different jobs since I left school 15 years ago, and for one year I worked in a primary school, and honestly, it was like entering an alternative reality. I can't quite put my finger on what makes schools like that, but it's a whole lot of weird.

The receptionist is always so overdrafts about absences. Although it is important to sign in and out in case there's a fire or emergency so they know that you're not missing in the midst of a fire or after a lockdown. But they really are very funny about you leaving school regardless of if you sign out or not
I did this once, really forgot to sign out, I came back in and she just laughed and signed me back in and told me to remember next time. But then 4 months later she retired and I needed to leave again and I forgot to sign out once again- I came back and the new receptionist literally took 50% of my attendance away which meant I wasn't allowed to go to an event which you needed 90% or more attendance to go to🙃
