On note of people not showing appreciation, I'm guilty of that as well. So I'm reversing it now. Mr Malcolm your book outliers change my attitude about mastery, coupled that with mastery by Robert Greene well let's just say my successes in business are attributed to you guys, so THANK YOU SO MUCH. As for you Ryan, I don't even know where to begin, obstacles is the way, ego is the enemy, stillness is the key, daily stoic etc. It's not an exaggeration to say I've memorized every single chapter and lines in your books because of how often I listen, read, review, analyze and apply those wisdom, coupled that with Mr William Irvine's a guide to the good life, my entire philosophy of life is attributed to you guys and for that I'M ETERNALLY GRATEFUL!

What a wonderful conversation! Thank you Malcolm and Ryan. Side note: I got my COVID shots and I really really really don't like needles.
Having read and loved books and podcasts by Holiday and Gadwell, this episode is a true gem. Kicking myself for not going to Holiday's bookstore when I was an Austinite from 1996 to 2023. Next trip home it will be a must.
Wow - such a great episode! I do think that the "thinking time" and when you are "sharpest during the day" varies from person to person. Or even the locations, etc. Gladwell can write in coffee shops, while Ryan needs his space to be clear. It underlined for me not necessarily that these are rules and best possible configurations are very personal, and each one of us needs to home in and identify when we feel sharpest and most focused and really leverage this to our advantage. Love all the insight provided in this channel and in this interview. Thanks again.
Two people that are so open minded when it comes to learning are so close minded in learning about the covid vaccine. Keep learning. You are both awesome.
Just about to get into this podcast. I like Gladwell’s books and indeed, his voice!👍🏻What I am feeling right now though is how the interviewer is very keen to speak, I mean it’s Malcolm Gladwell for goodness sake…🙏🏻
Good morning from London. I can't believe you have interviewed my favourite author. I am yet to read his last book, good reminder to download the audio book. . Looking forward to learn from the legends🙏🙏.
If this is something I'm interrupting my creative flow with in the morning today. It was worth it!! I'm glad I could see both young wisdom and old wisdom and in the same frame today! A lot of insights from their experiences.
Holiday, I love you, man. Love your books. All you've done. But sometimes just be a reporter like Gladwell and just listen to the answers to your questions without trying to make a point.
I think the distinction Ryan is trying to draw at 44:25 is the difference between simplification and distillation. This is a fucking great conversation.
Incredibly ironic. One of my college professors gave me the book Outliers at the end of the semester one year. We had a class at an arboretum and have students the choice to do tree identification or run this loop. Well I really admired this professor and wasn’t the brightest pupil when it came to coding (the class was systems design/development) but I admired my professor because he taught us how to think rather than just the material. So I trained for this day so I could impress him. Leading up to the day he kept saying how his daughter held the record time for running the loop. I’ll never forget his reaction when I crossed the finish line and he looked at the stop watch. He had to do a double take and said “wow that was uh, actually pretty fast…” I think he was disappointed that I had surpassed his daughter lol
@@conversationcorner1837 I would say that it has made me more open-minded and willing to find other ways to accomplish things. Like there isn't necessarily one best way to do anything. It's also given me insight into how and why people become successful. It wasn't the best book but I did find some value in it
This hypnotizing Music - when YOU do not talk - so enjoyable- real Stoic. When you talk - without Music - is that any intersting... make a Music DJ Stoic...
53:00 historical context is never mentioned in todays debates concerning actions in the past. I study philosophy in Vienna, Austria and here studebts are amazed when they read the statements written by thinkers from in a time, when people died from drinking water.
"Seven of the United States’ eight five-star Army and Navy officers in 1945 agreed with the Navy’s vitriolic assessment. Generals Dwight Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur and Henry “Hap” Arnold and Admirals William Leahy, Chester Nimitz, Ernest King, and William Halsey are on record stating that the atomic bombs were either militarily unnecessary, morally reprehensible, or both."
Excessive talking by the interviewer spoils great interviews. Mixing it up with conversational talking points and no nonsense questions would be a better balance.
Two writers I very much respect, but the conversation got very weird towards the end … Ryan lamenting the government doesn’t have absolute control over people? 1:10:50 Malcolm speaking dismissively of the concept of getting parental permission before giving kids shots? 1:10:10 What the heck?!
What are some books that best explain "the art of storytelling"?. I would google it but I think it would be best to ask in a space like this, especially with this worldwide connection that you all enjoy
I would also like an answer to this one. The closest I can think of are The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp and The Artists Way by Julia Cameron, neither really address storytelling specifically though and focus more on general creativity. Steven Pressfield is another author along such lines, but also doesn’t fit the question so perfectly.
I’d recommend the podcast You Are a Storyteller by Jesse Bryan and Brian McDonald! It’s not only about storytelling but also about the function of stories in society and in the lense of how it applies to all areas of life, as well goes into more technical parts in structures and the art of it. Bryan McDonald has also written the book “Invisible Ink” which is about writing stories too!
I am a fan of both authors and listen to most of their podcasts too, but I think Ryan should have spoken a little less and let Mr. Gladwell speak a little more.
Excellent show, except the VAXX comments didn’t age well since Buffalo Bills just had a Monday Night Football player go down in front of the Nation, 24 years old, healthy, heart attack!! They mandated vaccine for their team! 🙌🤷🏻♀️😳😳
Ryan, I’d really love to see you interview more people with opposing viewpoints. I think it’ll make your content shine a bit more and we’d get to see your stoic mantras in play against people who disagree with you to just about the same passionate values that you stand on. Otherwise it just feels like an echo chamber. A very dangerous place to be.
"No one was more impassioned in his condemnation than Leahy, Truman’s chief of staff. He wrote in his memoir “that the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender …. In being the first to use it we had adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages.”
"Before the bombings, Eisenhower had urged at Potsdam, “the Japanese were ready to surrender and it wasn’t necessary to hit them with that awful thing.”
It's difficult to believe that these two haven't heard at all of the measured concentrations of spike protein in the bone marrow and ovaries. What's going on here?
Buddy, Malcom is placating you, because he knows HE is the poison pill in non-fiction today, which has the power to disease the educational waters for years to come.
Love your conversation but I think you should look a little deeper into how the vaccines were developed. Denying the vaccine is not a macho thing but an intellectual commitment. Study deeper.
"civic duty as a human being". Ryan do some more research. Or write another book!, I know this is later, but nothing has changed! Ryan I have your books, but I cannot believe how gullible you are for such a smart guy???
Malcolm, you willfully ignore, not just the "dumb criticism", but ANY and ALL dialectical discussion of your views and assertions. Although you attempt to fool others, ultimately, you are only fooling yourself.
I'm proof of the I disagree with one aspect so the rest bothers me. When Gladwell mentioned the problem with the Minneapolis police I immediately was on the defensive since the victim they were referring to was drugged out and in the middle of a crime.
He also also handcuffed on his stomach while the officer kneeled on his neck killing him. The man begged for his life and we saw home killed on camera. This was counter to the training that he received according to the police department. He violated protocol and killed a man.
Thinking the same. I pray there is an update or retraction soon. Or perhaps it is his opinion purely based on political ideology. Which is so sad. By now we all know somone who either has regret or is managing a bad side effect or worse. To flatly advocate such a complex, nuanced medical intervention is exceedingly shortsighted.
Minute 33 😅, yes - millions of more nerds would actually be awesome. So many more fun convos
Not a writer but I'm a 6th grade science teacher who has to create interesting lessons tailored to my students and this was incredibly insightful.
On note of people not showing appreciation, I'm guilty of that as well. So I'm reversing it now. Literally my two favourite writers having a chat 😍
The addition of robert greene would be the perfect trifecta, imho.
Right!?! How did I miss this? Mind you I came across them both at different times in my life but 100% two great writers and a great interview.

I have learned more from these two humans beings than from the traditional educational system.

@@erichopham thanks
Which books of Gladwell would you recommend ?
@@conversationcorner1837 Definitely "Outliers."
This is great! Please do more of these sessions, two of my favorite authors discussing writing, history, and life!

I’m lifting weights and listing to your conversation and also all the daily stoic
Just saw my man on “Hot Ones” and now with Ryan Holiday. Nice!
Thank you both
Very informative ❤
Two people that are so open minded when it comes to learning are so close minded in learning about the covid vaccine. Keep learning. You are both awesome.
Thanks for the condensed wisdom Ryan. You made me into a stoic and helped me grow.
Having a good listen to this

great way to start the day. Two great minds coming together.
I'm loving these podcasts! Thanks for sharing. Peace.
Outliers is still my favorite noon-fiction book.

How has the book "outliers" helped you ?

Ryan, this interview was fantastic! So many great nuggets of info. Thank you!
We read Gladwell's book 'Outliers' in highschool, really good book. Cool you talked with him!

The background music is really nice. Do you know the name of the background music?
Great minds connecting :)
Don’t forget MG just ran a 5:15 mile. I don’t think he’s slowing down.

Loved this
Going to click that like button then tune in.

Thanks for the candid expose'.

38:50 😆😆 Soo much on point
Wow I have 90 percent of my ideas come to me on a run this is interesting to its not the same for Malcolm
Funny how ideas come to us when we don't actively think about having them.
Can someone tell me the name of the background music at the start?

Ryan Holiday looks and sounds like he could be related to Jerry Seinfeld
Wow I didn’t realize that until now. The resemblance is overwhelming.
I am a fan of both authors and listen to most of their podcasts too, but I think Ryan should have spoken a little less and let Mr. Gladwell speak a little more.

I feel the way about cycling that they do about running
Okay, that nail biting kinda scared me.
Like both of these guys and have all of their books- don’t like their elitism and snobby attitude - Ryan tbf-but decent books
I hate haters
Lots of talk about running.
Too much ranting. Between the two of you there is so much wisdom. So much time was spent talking about haters and detractors. Why?
You know who I see winning a nobel prize in literature..........?....... Malcolm Gladwell............NOT
Ryan, I’d really love to see you interview more people with opposing viewpoints. Ryan Holiday...one of the most egotistical men I've ever listened to. Didn't listen to this podcast but I've heard him many times.
If you did not listen, why did you post here or search it out?

When they say goat, it means they are freemasons.
Damn, he needs to eat some food first.
This was such an insightful conversation until you started talking about covid.
The mandatory vaccination conversation really didn’t age well. Makes me question every opinion held by these two , despite respecting their work.
How is that: Stoic look so weak? Tell me Ryan?
You really think the subject matter of Talking with Strangers shouldn't have been interesting?!!! Wow
It is interesting.
So sorry, but the last part of this video is very boring. Thanks for the rest of the video.
Difficult choices
It's difficult to believe that these two haven't heard at all of the measured concentrations of spike protein in the bone marrow and ovaries. What's going on here?
Wait is this like the Malcom gladwell?
yep, the 10.000h one
Now let's talk about those of us that cannot run.
Nobody asks Gladwell about Epstein
Buddy, Malcom is placating you, because he knows HE is the poison pill in non-fiction today, which has the power to disease the educational waters for years to come.

Conveniently ignoring all side effects ("few sideeffects..." are you kidding Ryan). You've both lost me, puppets of the mainstream.
Be brave, millennials are so weak, get the vaccine!
More people die eating peanuts than the COVID vaccine
