Your technique of putting jars upside down when they are clean and ready to use is absolutely brillant! So simple and practical.
Thank you! It avoids confusion, and saves time. Jim
You could also use the water from the jars to fill your canner, instead of watering the plants, since you need water for that :)
Great point! Thanks.
I was going to say that.😊 Either need works.
Once the canner water has cooled it can go on plants too. Get more than one use of the water.
Brilliant! Thank you for this advice!
I use my water for the canner.
It’s as if I’m hanging out with my great Aunt again! Great systematic teacher and full of loving wisdom!
I started storing water in my extra jars after seeing a video about it. My husband thought I was crazy until we had a lot of flooding this year. Several small communities had their water supplies contaminated by the cattle feed lots. Plus, two towns were devastated by tornadoes, which hurt their water supplies. He hasn't said anymore about the "canned" water. 8:03
That is a great story--thank you for sharing.
Wouldn't that work short term if the water wasn't processed? Great idea, though.
Amen❤❤❤❤
I slip my 1/2 gallon jars in a brown lunch sack (amazon)-fits perfectly as an added bonus it keeps light out, which is great for freeze dried items so the color of the food doesn't bleach out --the sacks can be used over and over.
I cut the tops of old socks and slip over jars to keep from rattling around when empty or moving to a location.
I do the same with used lids on cleaned jars along with turning it upside down!
Love your thoughtfulness in providing your solutions to common canning questions!!
I have surely learned a plethora from you since 2020!!
Thanks for sharing! Great idea. Wow...since 2020--that is a year after we started. Thanks for being part of our community!
I also use cut off socks to protect glass jars and to insulate my drink bottles from condensation while I drink out of the refrigerator. Love the idea!
Someone else puts a rubber band around the center of every other jar, to prevent them touching.
@@nadogrl that’s a great idea!!
❤❤️❤️👍
BRILLIANT!! I’m going to adopt your system right away… I’ve found myself washing and rewashing jars because I couldn’t remember if and when I had washed them. THANK YOU.
So glad the information was helpful.
Excellent❤❤❤.....Newbie sends you a😁 & many thanks 🎉
People absolutely wash your jars. There was a time period in 2020 where all the new jars i bought smelled so horrible that i would soak all the jars with vinegar and then scrub the heck out of them! They smelled like fleet, like they might have been spraying bug insecticide at the warehouses! It was horrible!. Everytime i see someone on utube opening new jars not washing and disinfecting them it makes my skin crawl and I stop watching them. To me someone that doesnt properly clean their jars is NOT someone i want to learn from.!
That is one of the main reasons i love and watch your channel because you always properly clean and sanitize no matter what your doing.
I love my family and friends way to much to be lazy and NOT do things right.
Thank-you Ms. PAM!!!!
You may consider going to a liquor store for empty boxes. I love that some are super thick and sturdy and have dividers to keep them from breaking. You can spray paint the box if you don't want to look at the liquor labeling. I also use these boxes for filled with food storage jars. I keep what I can on shelves , but when I don't have room on the shelves I put my label on the box with content and date. Then stack them. I've seen pricey plastic canning jar boxes. I just can't pay those prices.
Love your channels.
Great idea! Thanks for sharing.
Back when kerr and ball sold there jars in full boxes...it was so handy to stack those boxes....
I got a fair amount of my jars second hand
I personally think you should be doing some videos on anti aging and skincare. I’m 57. I want to look as good as you do when I’m your age. I bet I’m not the only one who’d watch what you might share on this topic! 😊
Thanks for the complements. We will add that suggestion to the list. Jim
Pam ,I can’t tell you how much your videos have helped me .I ‘m 65 and I wasn’t confident enough but really wanted to start canning .I found your channel about 2yrs ago and I’ve been canning and stocking up my pantry thanks to you. I was so pleased when you retired ,first for you and then I thought you’ll have more time to make videos ,yea!!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us .God Bless you Pam and Jim 😊
Get a large dollar store mirror to see what is on the top shelves; that saves getting on a step-ladder and maybe a hip.
for those of you who shop Costco there are boxes there that will fit both Quarts (check the wine dept) and Pints with the cardboard dividers in them -( for those in earthquake country like me.) suitable to replace damaged original boxes, just takes a little size checking to get the ones that work best.. Press and Seal works well as a replacement dust cover.
Great tips! Thank you so much for sharing.
I put them back, upside down, but with a paper towel on the bottom.
I’ve become a fan of INDEX CARDS… label the front of my used boxes/jars with what’s actually in that box. When the contents change, so does the index card…. So easy to organize/date the box and know what I’m looking for without having to pick up multiple jars
Great idea! Thanks for sharing.
me too! Plus I keep a notebook of everything I preserve so when I'm thinking about meals I look in it to see what there is, and then look at the date to see where the jar is (because I have several banks of canned goods--the oldest stuff is at the foot of the stairs, last year's stuff is over there, and the previous year's stuff is over here, and the water is way at the back because I canned lots of water a few years ago). I cross it off in the notebook when I open the jar. When I label the jars and write in the notebook I make sure the name of the product is exactly the same as on the recipe so there will be no confusion.
@ConnieSolutions you need to come organize my house for me please!😂 It sounds like you're a natural at it!
I use painter tape to label my stuff come off day too
I do that, too, but I just use a strip of masking tape. If the contents of the box changes, I put a new piece of tape over the old one.
I use hand sanitizer to remove my sharpie pen from the lids! Takes away almost all, if not all the ink every time!!!
Great tip! Thanks.
Dry erase marker works, too.
Baking soda works, too. I have some in a spice jar and just sprinkle it on and wipe it off when I'm doing dishes.
One way to keep the dust off the individual jars that no longer have a box, is to go to your local LDS Bishops store house. They have a section there for the general public to purchase food storage items. They also sell some wonderful white boxes that are normally used to fit 6 #10 cans. I have found that you can fit 15 quart jars very nicely in each box. I have used these boxes to store my used older jars and I also store older quart and pint jars that are now filled with freeze dried food. This helps keep the light out of my Freeze dried foods and keeps the jars dust free. It’s a win-win. They are quite sturdy and hold the weight of bottles full of water (however they do get too heavy for me to carry, so I fill the box once it is on the shelve.). They charge a dollar a box. I love them!!!
Good to know! Thanks for sharing.
If you've got one close enough...I'd have to drive at least 3 hours to get to one!!
Is she a member?
@@YasuTaniina you do not need to be a member to buy items from the food storage portion of the storehouse. It is open to everyone. One of the church’s missions is to help everyone become self sufficient, not just its members. That is why the church spends billions every year to assist others worldwide with all kinds of humanitarian projects helping families in third world countries. They are never asked if they are members. Neither are you asked at the Store House if you are a member.
Can you order items to be shipped, or do you have to go pick them up in person?
Great tips on this. I’m forever rewashing my jars just to be sure. I tried putting a tiny piece of white paper with a “W” on it, to indicate a jar had already been washed it, however, I like your method far better.
Love this. I also never run apartly filled canner. Ifi need 1 or 2 jars ill fill them with water and can them. I have a whole shelf of water we can drink, give to the animals or clean wounds with. Its sterile.
I would like to add 1 little thing. I store all of my jars with lids and rings. This protects the jar rims from getting any chips or other flaws.
I love the way you think. I love that you don't jabber.
Rose you’re nothing short of a blessing
The way you strive for efficiency is one of the things I love most.
lol. Your quite the Hoot 😌. 🙏Prayers for you and the hubby, Jim.
Now that is deep thinking! Awesome idea! Thanks
Canning people are the most organized people I know! This is a great system. I do about the same thing except that I wash everything as soon as it comes in the house so they are ready to go. I also fill everything with water and use that water, usually in the canning process. I can tell new/used lids because of writing on lids.
That is awesome! Thanks for sharing.
I've had to can my freezer twice and it's a big job. I also keep empty jars & lids for that. I discovered that pint and a half jars actually work well for us for canned chicken. I had 8 cases (of 9) that I'd gotten on a close out sale and hadn't thought how to use them. But they were clean and ready to go. I usually can in pints and quarts. But I find that when I'm canning pints I can get a third layer of 1/2 pints on top. That's perfect for my husband to add to a commercially canned soup to up the protein and make it more of a meal for him. So the last time I had to can my freezer it was mainly in pints and pint & a half jars with a smattering of half pints and several loads of soup in quarts. I'm always amazed at the amount of chicken broth in my freezer. I've actually had to go buy celery, carrots and onions because I made so much soup!
LOL! thanks for sharing. I don't envy having to can your freezer but glad you were prepared!
I wish our local stores (FL) sold pint & 1/2 jars. That size is perfect for 2-3 people. Last summer we traveled to MI & we bought 3 cases of those jars.
You always give the best tips. I always wash used jars and then turn upside down in boxes. Putting water in jars gives emergency backup, I like that idea. Thank you for sharing with us 😊
Thanks for sharing!!
I always store my empty jars upside down and in the box. They stay clean.
Totally agree with storing water in cleaned new new jars and old jars. Unfortunately only space I have to store them is garage no issues yet. Was taught that by my grandmother to do this, just in case… Were not called preppers back then just but were responsibly prepared. Recently I was referred to as a prepper. Had to think about it but decided I would accept that label. I am not a doomsday sayer nor a survivalist but I have always prepared for unplanned emergencies. The one time, I allowed my stocks to go down because we were moving to new home, the pandemic hit and we were scrambling for TP, LOL. Never again!
Tes, lot of us scrambled for TP. Jim
I am totally sold on your method! After decades of washing cans multiple times, I’m ready to start this system.
This was a timely video for me. You helped me with 3 problems I am having:
Water storage
Jar storage
Lid and ring storage
A heartfelt thank you for sharing your system!
Glad it was helpful! Jim
I was taught when learning to can always store clean jars upside down. My grandmother said she wasn't washing more than she had to. She had to heat water in the tank on her wood stove. We just did what she said and I've kept that part of her canning ways just not all her recipes and procedures.
I always store my clean jars upside down in a box. I have done that for years.
I miss my grandmother she was so smart.
@@patriciacooke886 I was lucky to grow up in a household with a great aunt, my great grandmother, my mom, 2 sisters and me. Grandparents had a farm so stayed there for summer and worked and learned. Good times.
Those of us who knew our grandmothers are very blessed indeed!
Pam: Great tips, I also use a similar idea when actually canning. After I process each batch of canned food I give each item processed in that particular batch a number or letter code. I do not reuse the codes. If one jar in a lot is giving me cause to be concerned I then watch its siblings. And should a serious problem then occur, I can tell that processed batch from other batches processed before or after it. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to isolate a bad batch of canning when there are a sea of identical items on the shelf. I also label, date and code every canned good and stored item. Great system I will adopt it.
I love your system for your canned goods. Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant! 😊
How I store my pint jars. (500 ml)., 18 jars fit in my canner and 18 jars fit in a 5 gallon bucket. They stay clean and you can also put water in them.
Great idea! Thanks for sharing.
Pam, this simple method is pure genius! I had another, "Why didn't I think of that?" moment. Thanks so much!
I am going through ALL my stash cleaning and lidding. I am checking rims etc and then placing a clean new lid and ring on each. (I have never had any idea how many extra lids I would need!) Then I am treating them like new jars. Thank you for helping me safe guard this resource.
I some how came up with the same storing technique as you! I'm really glad to know the jars are still clean and usable once washed and put upside down. One thing I do that maybe you hadn't thought of for jars that have a box but no plastic, after I wash them and turn them upside down I cover them with a large cotton towel. This way it keeps dust out. Thank you Pam for all you teach us!
You are so welcome! Jim
It is a blessing to be the beneficiary of your wisdom and experience. Thank you !
I tape the plastic covering to the box along the long edge otherwise the plastic becomes loose and eventually falls off. When the box us full, I also tape the top to hold it in place and then tape a small label with the year and contents. Love your show.
Excellent! I'm so glad there is only one of you Pam, because I could never handle two with all the information I have to remember 🤣😅🤣😅💐💙🙏🇺🇸
You are so welcome! Jim
THANK YOU! My late grandmother's notes on canning never said anything about washing them first and leaving them upside down. You just solved a family question on why some empty jars were stored upside down. Also, she roped off the shelves so jar wouldn't fall off.
Wonderful!
Yes!!! My mom taught me years ago to always store water in your empty jars!
Your mom was very smart!
I miss the old regular boxes with dividers and flaps that the jars used to come in. I'm trying to find a wine or spirits box that's the right size to fit them that I can re-use from work to store my canning jars and food because we are going to have to move again in a year or two.
Big peach case boxes work well.
@@jeanettegilder1616do you mean boxes that peaches come in, like from Costco?
Yes
🎉 omg this is so timely. We have moved and I’m getting ready to organize my whole storage area.
Same lol
Love this system! Will make life a whole lot simpler. Thank you for sharing.
I use that system of turning jars upside down when washed and clean too! For reusing the lids that have been written on with marker pens, I will spray it with alcohol to erase, then mark an “X” to denote the lid as used and still have room to write content and date when reusing. BUT, what I did not think to do and will start doing is filling the jars with water. Also love the “dust flap” cover as I live in desert country too. Thanks Pam and Jim!
Thanks for sharing your idea!
Organise empty canning jars??? In Australia, canning jars are scarce or ridiculously expensive. People are canning in used commercial product jars with lug lids a lot here. The only Australian jars available here are hundreds of miles away from me. I pay nearly $200AU for 60 x pint jars. So it actually makes me cry watching US canners saying they have 600+ jars. 😭
I am so sorry. That is a hard thing.
I was amazed when I saw this video. I use the same system and I only started canning in May of this year. The only difference is I put paper towels on the bottom of my boxes and store the lids and rings in another place but I will start storing my jars with lids and rings now! Thank you so much for your great ideas!🌹
What an efficient process. I hadn’t thought of storing water in my empty jars. Quite honestly, it’s an amazing idea! The storage footprint remains the same, but it becomes dual purposed. It’s especially helpful for those of us with limited space and a desire to keep water on hand. You and Jim have revolutionized my life with your educational videos. Thank you for your safe teachings. I’m tickled for you, your weight loss journey. You inspire us all💗You two have a wonderful holiday 😊
I love this system. I have often been concerned about the need to do emergency canning. Having clean jars ahead of time would be really helpful when water is limited.
Thank you Pam. I use the same system. I recently overhauled my 3 pantries, refreshing my mind as to the dates of canned goods, organized my used jars and set aside jars that need to use sooner rather than later. Truth is…I just feel better about my food storage! Thank you for reiterating the need to be as proficient as we can be in these troubling times!
Beth here...my Gram always stored her jars with water in them and taught me to do the same
My First thought : Why didn't I think of that!😊 This is a great idea. Instead of having all those cases of empty jars they can be prepped and filled with water! And I am always washing the jars several times, too. Your system is very workable.
One question on the water storage: for how long is the stored water safe to drink? and what can be added to it of too much time has passed?
Before I saw your tip about keeping the boxes and the plastic I tossed them. Those jars I now keep safe from brakage by pulling thick socks over them.
Love the socks idea. If the jars and lids are super clean when the water goes in, the water will stay good indefinitely. I have had a couple of jars where that wasn't the case and when I removed the lid the water smelled of rotten eggs. In times of emergency need, I would have added a little bleach to sanitize the water.
Great idea , I normally save the boxes to store the jars in but never thought to save the plastic wrapping
I love how you are always improving your techniques and willing to share with us. The method you use is simple and efficient! Fantastic!! Thank you!
You are very welcome.
Love the ideas, I have my own system as well.
I saw another YTer cut down boxes to size, place thick foam like for packing plates when moving, and bubble wrap slices between them, then wrap them with many layers of plastic wrap to keep them clean.
Also, removing the plastic from the store seems like a better idea, not only is it dirty, sometimes it isn't closed all the way around, allowing dust and insects in. Also, the plastic can get dusty, so changing it when necessary is pretty easy.
Good strategic planning pays dividends.
Thank you for helping so many of us with our canning chores. Your way is great!
I love your system of storing jars. I developed almost the same procedure early this spring when I had sooooo many empty jars. It saves so much time and planning.
That's so smart! I live in a hurricane and tornado zone. I always keep a few 2 L soda bottles 3/4 of water in my freezer. Then out in the deep freezer I keep a several milk jugs of frozen water. That way if power goes out, it really does help save the food for a few days or so. I will also transfer a few frozen milk containers into our house refrigerator if power goes out. Only ooen freezers when absutely necessary. Plan what you are going to do so you only have to open the fridge a few times a day. We lost power for a week once and our deep freezer foods were still semi frozen. Ice flakes still in the meat. Maybe risky at that point but it definitely helps in shorter term outages.
Great ideas. Thanks for sharing.
Great ideas, Pam, thank you!
Our area now gets earthquakes, so I first made sure to fasten all pie safes and jelly cupboards to the wall studs. Then, I ordered white mesh wine bottle sleeves online and I slip them over all the jars of foods that are not in divided cardboard trays. They are not pricey and can be easily slipped off for reuse again and again. I would be heartbroken to have broken food jars from a quake!
In hurricane zone I love the water idea.
BRILLIANT. There’s just no other word. My only addition to your system will be to post a card with my jars explaining the system. I’m grateful you shared this. Thank you ❤.
This video is an example of why I come back to your channel again and again for information and advice. Your instructions are easy to understand, and I like your summary at the end highlighting important points made. Thank you so much! ❤
What a great system! The storing water in clean jars is a great idea, thank you for sharing. Great way to keep rings with jars & not having to find storage for them.
You are welcome.
Thank you for your great ideas. I never knew you could put lids in the dishwasher! One has enough to do at harvest season without having to wash jars too!
Even though we have washed and packed them away, we always wash them again to be safe. Jim
Genius!
Boy, do I know about dust and dirt! We live next to blue ribbon organics, which makes compost for businesses, families, and whoever they sell to. I can walk outside on a windy day after taking a shower, and my face will be covered in dirt.😹 good thing is, we get free compost!!!😊🌱
Wow--glad you get some compensation, at least! Thanks for your comment.
We scoured flea markets and estate sales in gathering 35 old milk crates for our unboxed jar storage. Jars run through the dishwasher get turned upside down on Dollar Store kitchen towels, then stored in our garden barn. I don't like putting rings and lids on them since they get exposed to heat and cold (possibly degrading the lid?), so lids go into the basement. I remember one summer being outside and hearing lids screwed on empty jars going *ping*! The milk crates stack beautifully and do double duty in transferring canned goods to the basement pantry where jars are put on shelves. The downside was not labelling the crates - that was fun unstacking and then labelling! Like you, I wasn't thinking ahead and threw so many cardboard boxes away - things that make you go *doh*. You betcha we save the boxes now! We're very fortunate to have basement storage for finished goods, and the barn for supplies. Then again, we're in a tornado prone Indiana so I wouldn't have a house without a basement, e.g., on Sunday 10 super cells and funnels skipped all around us north to south. Your organization skills are 100% 🏆
Thanks for telling us your experiences. Stay safe in tornado country. Jim
@@RoseRedHomestead Thank you, Jim! We keep an eye/ear out when there's storm watches. We both get texts from our county EMS, I have a portable police scanner with the Weather Watchers' frequency, our phones have live radar, and I carry an iPad so I can listen to the channel Ryan Hall Y'All - who has the *ultimate* live coverage of national storms! It sounds OCD but we've had tornado damage both personally and very close by. They're not always visible if wrapped in ferocious rains or at night, and flying debris has a larger and deadly footprint outside the funnel itself. Thank you again.
I've been making an effort to get a decent stash of jars for extra, and every pay check I am spending $100. When my jars come, I immediately wash them in the dishwasher. For the longest time, I just stashed them. And then realized... oh crud, what happens if I don't have lots of water to wash all these and need them immediately? So, I spent two weeks washing all my jars and re-storing them. The only thing I have not done is fill them with water, I do have a few from open spots that I had in my canner during a project, where I just fill an additional jar and stick it in there to fill the space full. They have a designated space in my canning pantry.
Thanks for sharing. You made a very good point about having them washed and ready in case water becomes scarce!
Very clever.
Brilliant!!!
Great system. This will save me a ton of time.
You are a boss !!! You should be running a company!
Fabulous!! Thank you, an excellent answer to what I’ve been mulling over!
Very slick strategy. I need to use this method. I very much dislike double and triple duty.
We all work hard..we might as well work smart as we go!
Another way to keep your washed and cleaned jars in the cases free from dust is to buy the clear recycled bags which are very large, huge from Costco‘s and sit cases on the floor in those bags and you can get at least four to six cases of washed and clean jars in each bag and just tie the bag closed.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing.
Janis - I can’t picture the bags…would you mind a giving a little more information, please?❤
@@nadogrl it’s the size of a large black garbage bag but it’s clear. I’ve been using them for years for lots of things, but mostly for my recycling items. They also have blue ones but they’re not as big as the clear ones.
@@janisfowler113 - Thank you! I have some of the giant Ziploc bags, but I’ve never seen those others at Costco.❤️

What a Fantastically smart video. I have tons of jars that I’m tired of washing ( dirt gravel road ) thank you again for such great information.
Lots of tubers have the same topic at the same time, but still a great topic to repeat. I keep enough jars at the ready for freezer failure.

Love the water stoage idea!
That's a good idea it's a jewel usability😊

I love your system! Especially washing the new jars and turning them upside down! I’m going to just love grabbing clean jars when starting a canning project!
Such great ideas. Thanks. I'll be using all the ideas from now on.

My Ma-Maw used large paper grocery bags. Lady then sideways 2-3 deep. Good the top of the bag over and tape it closed. Works great, unless you're in a quake zone.
I love your strategy. Thank you so much for your knowledge.
Great system. I need this
I’ve been doing near the same, down here, in hurricane prone FL. I do pressure can the water, as I’ve found that regular tap water will mold, even in the cleanest vessels here.
Great system. I need all the help I can get on how to get organized. Organizing has never been an easy thing for me. 😊Thank you! 💖
