I follow basically all K3 owners on UA-cam, and I follow pretty closely what people are currently making with this camera and how they're pushing its limits. But this-this thing you made over 20 years ago-is maybe the most fleshed out and finished project I've ever seen anyone make with a K3. This is 20 years old, but by uploading it here, just became the new high bar for what you can do if you're committed enough to put up with the limitations of this camera and make something.
That kept me engaged the whole time. Great atmosphere. One of the actors reminded me of Nick Cage but they were all really good. Loved the super cheesy music in the store :) The soundtrack was so perfect for the offbeat vibe and the pacing was spot on. Really well done.
Love the 90’s vibe! Looks pretty great considering the long chain of transformations it took to get to UA-cam. I’ve recently gotten back into film still photography after a nearly two decade hiatus, and I keep wanting to get some supper8 film, see if my old cameras still work. Have you looked into getting the original film re-scanned? I’ve seen 4K super8 that looks pretty good, I’d imagine this would look fantastic with a new 4K scan.
Thanks! Yeah compared to how it looked coming off the Beta SP tape Topaz did a really good job upscaling and cleaning it up, although of course it still has the 16mm film characteristics of grain, some gate weave and there’s flicker in some scenes due to the wind-up camera and its registration pin. And yes, I’m actually considering getting the old film negative re-scanned to 4K and then maybe remastering but I don’t have the old EDL so it would have to be reassembled by hand. But I might just do it for fun to see how it looks and make a UA-cam video about it. :)
It’s a Zoom lens that comes with the camera. I believe it’s a 17-69mm f/1.9. When I got the film processed the lab used telecine to transfer it to Beta SP tape, which I used to edit with.
@@BlakeCalhoun I love the quality. I got the K2 and the same zoomlens and I'm asking if I would be able to create a similiar resolution. Looking forward to scan my negatives in a professional way. Thanks for your answer!
Used a Sennheiser 416 going into a DAT recorder. We’d shoot the main take with the camera rolling, and we’d cut and do the scene again for sound only so the actors would try to do the same performance. And we’d also grab wild lines as needed. Did some looping later too I think. And then we added lots of foley in post. Syncing it up was tricky!
hey Blake, thank you for this video! Why did you choose to put the footage through some kind of AI-upscaling? It looks really jarring with the Ai-paintjob on top of the footage and I would love to see the original footage. Please consider uploading an unaltered version, since it would do your work much more justice! Kind regards!
Because it’s SD 720x480. Topaz Video AI does some denoising, but I added film grain back in so it looks very similar to the original off the tape, just higher resolution - and importantly it’s been deinterlaced too. It was interlaced video before as it came off tape. I am toying with the idea of getting the original 16mm negative re-scanned and then remastering that, and if I do that I’ll make a UA-cam video about it and maybe release the movie again. :) Thanks for watching!

That’s cool, I actually didn’t know people were still using that camera much. :) Appreciate you watching and commenting!
Great movie , color grading looks awesome 👏👏👏👍🏻

Fantastic job 💪
Appreciate it!

oooo very very Pulp Fiction like, love it
Thanks for watching!
When you tagged me, I was thinking ”I don’t recall being in this one.” Imagine my surprise to see that I sort of was! 😎
A cameo, of sorts. :)
You need to make that gold mustang your “Hitchcock silhouette”
What's the lens? And how did you scan it?

how did you record the sound?
