    This is by far my favorite airplane/pilot channel. It's the perfect combination of piloting and slice of life. Thanks!

    I'm enjoying the videos. I recently bought into a 75' E and fly out of Greenville SC. I've been to FFA and a few other destinations you mentioned. I'd be interested in helping out with the Christmas flying you did in another video. Thanks for sharing.

    A good engineer will always want to be a pilot and a Mooney will always be the choice of a good engineer. What else is there? Loving your videos in Lake Orion.

    New to channel. Fellow Mooney pilot here..Really enjoy content, especially the stories. I visited First Flight a couple of months ago. Enjoyed taking in the history of flight. Curious how you got from airport to golf course/residence?

      Thanks for the kind words. We took an Uber from the airport to the hotel (since we got in after rental places closed), then took an Uber the next morning to the rental car place which is about a half mile from First Flight. The weather was a problem over West Virginia after golf so we talked to the people at First Flight and they allowed us to stay an extra night so we extended our stay by a day.

    Very Nice Video. How long was the flight from Midland to N.C.?

    • @FrugalMooney
      @FrugalMooney  3 роки тому

      It was 4 hours from KIKW to KFFA, +/- a minute or two.

    Nice videos, I see you enjoy your Mooney M20E. How compare it with other Mooneys who had electric gear extension and flaps vs your M20E with manual gear and flaps extension.

    • @FrugalMooney
      @FrugalMooney  3 роки тому

      Thanks, David. I've flown two other Mooneys: another M20E that was one year newer than mine (it still had the manual gear and flaps), and a 1977 M20J. Being money conscious (hence the channel name) the J's were too expensive for me at the time so I was looking for an E with some 201 mods. Manual gear was on my list of requirements - I like that it is practically zero maintenance (once again, being cost conscious) as well as the reliability: if I have a working arm I have working gear.
      As far as the difference between my M20E and the M20J I flew, the longer body of the J was nice for rear seat leg room (not that I'll ever sit in the rear seat) and cargo space. It also felt more stable in turbulence - the short body Mooneys are very close coupled so they yaw around a lot in turbulence and they are more touchy in pitch, but I don't mind that too much.

      @@FrugalMooney Thank you so much for your fast reply. I considering jump into one nice I saw in Trade a Plane 1964 M20E with Aspen indicator, I belong to a club which I fly a piper 28 but always looking to have a Mooney close to my budget since is only me and my wife for the most part who fly it and my 2 dogs ; ) . I'm 5'5 wondering how is the legs distance from seat to pedals is no problem in the Piper but hear a lot of comments on Mooney where it been mention of using cushion because of the distance from pilot seat and pedals. Anything you can mention of it. Will appreciate your input.

      @@DavidGonzalez-ry6zz Distance to the pedals is a thing in Mooneys, but I don't think it is what everyone makes it out to be. The real thing is that the panel (and yoke for that matter) are 2 to 3 inches closer to the occupants than it is in other planes. That feels weird at first and I think is what makes people think that Mooneys feel tight inside. That weird feeling keeps people from pulling the seat as far forward as it should be, leading to the feeling of the pedals being far away. Pull the seat up so your feet can get the pedals to the floor - the panel will feel like it's right on top of you and it will seem weird at first. After about 2 flights it will all feel perfectly normal and you won't even notice it. I actually have a video in the works on this topic. BTW - I'm 5'10" but have really short legs and a long torso - I have the legs of someone closer to 5'5" (it has killed my athletics career :) ).
      Quickly on something in your first comment: yes, I absolutely love this airplane. I've flown a LOT of planes and owned two before this, and I wouldn't consider owning anything else.

    What kind of airspeed and fuel flow were you getting...can't see the ASI. Thanks-looks fun and exactly why I'm taking PPL lessons.

    • @FrugalMooney
      @FrugalMooney  3 роки тому +1

      The first part of the flight true airspeed was 156 knots with mixture rich of peak (best power mixture). The last 2/3 of the flight was lean of peak (best economy mixture) getting 148 knots. At the power settings during the flight I historically get 10.0 and 7.8 GPH respectively (the fuel flow transducer was working intermittently at that time - I just had it replaced at my annual a few weeks ago, but I know those numbers very well). The power setting from IKW to FFA was at 23" manifold pressure and 2400 RPM.

      Control systems / embedded software. I used to do control algorithm design (I've done engine control, ABS/stability, hybrid drivetrain, and others), but now I mostly do low level embedded software.

      @@FrugalMooneyah ok, sounds intresting. I am also an engineer but here in austria, and i am also realy into flying but unfortunately it costs about 3 times more over here than in the states. and how long are you a pilot? Or how much do you fly annualy?

      @@SuperV8driver I've been flying for a little over 19 years. I used to aim for 100 hours/year, but since I opened the brewery I've only been getting about 30 hours per year. I started the youtube channel to provide myself some motivation to do more flying. So far it's working pretty well - I'll have flown more this year than the previous three years combined.
      As for cost - I recently started powered paragliding. That's a pretty good low cost alternative to get up in the air.
      Where in Austria? A past company I used to work for had an office in a small town on the Bodensee (Deutschland) and I used to spend a lot of time there. I've been to Austria a number of times for dinner along the Bodensee.

      @@FrugalMooney yea i started paragliding 11 years ago, but its a bit too dangerouse for my liking (a lot of experience is needed to surwive, not only to fly like a pro but to decide not to fly, even if you just hiked 8hours to the top of the mountain and you are tired of walking back down.... if the conditions are not right you have to abort...but if you are really into it and if you dont lack decipline, its awesome!!)
