Excellent video. I'm probably going to do my 02J today on my ALH Golf, and using Liqui Moly 75W90. Need to go get a 17mm hex bit. Will install a new dogbone mount while I'm at it.
Nice video, thanks. On all of my manual transmissions I have filled them by snaking a tube down from the upper part of the engine bay into the fill hole. I plug a funnel into the upper part of the hose and fill until it runs out. No pumping needed!
When shifting into first gear car should be almost complete stop. This is because 02J transmission is pretty old design internally and there is only one synchro ring on first gear. Many newer cars got two synchro rings in first gear so you would shift into first gear smoothly while car is moving.
Hi. Thanks. I didn't know that about the synchros. But, I am always at a dead stop when I go into first. I could just drive it like it is and give it a second before I shift. The slave cylinder is next and then maybe the master. Do you have any other ideas?
My so called mechanic did all the clutch pumping to find out it's the master cylinder 🥺. Brand new clutch and pressure plate kit. Which needed replacement, to find out about this. It was heartbreaking. Enjoy your golf with it's clean service 👌
Pull your top plug out before you do the bottom cause sometimes the top plug won’t come out as easy as the bottom and then you won’t be able to refill the transmission either fluids am then be sol
I usually do refill the box at the breathing hole up at the gear selector mechanism, or i completely remove the tower and fill up about 2-3 litres of oil... The gearbox is much quiter and shifts better, but sadly theese 02A and 02J boxes have weak 1st gear shyncros
@@MaqsVids Absolutely, the 2.5 litres is more than enough, but i usually do 3litres, didnt have a problem, and i did this to 3 car of mine so far without any problem.
bro, which gear grinds? if its 3rd then you will have a bad gearbox mount and bad dogbone mount. what happens is the gearbox swings back and forth changing the gear linkage by about an 8th of an inch in your measurements! this is enough to pull on the cable and make it grind! most people would think its a syncro, as you said you "gave it time" so a second or so and it was buttery. what is happening is this second is enough time for the engine to stop pulling the vehicle forward and correcting its swing position in the bay. as soon as its done it you have a nice gear change! if it was a bad syncro you would have a bad change every time! the fact you state it only happens "when you get on it" and give it some, its the mounts trust from a PD150 euro owner!
Hi! It only ever happened in first gear. After this video a made more where I kept trouble shooting it. ua-cam.com/video/6z564LN8W-E/v-deo.html I have not had a grind for a long time now. BUT!!! I bet I could still get it to grind a little if I tried. Now...I'm going to look into mounts. I'm sure it needs them. THANKS!
It helped a little. I did several things for the shifter and together they made the issue almost go away completely. I have not grinded into first for a long time now. Check out my MK4 Golf playlist if you haven't already. There are 4 other shifter videos.
save yourself 2 hours.... i learned that the mkiv Golf Brake master cylinder has 2 nipples that need to be bled aswell as the nipples at each of the 4 wheels
It's weird that every time you look up oil, every time,no joke, but every oil, every time you look it up, it is the best oil ever ???? No matter the oil??? Why is that? Maybe snake oil??? Salesman has a need to sell.and people lie?
You should always remove the fill plug first in case it's stuck. You can stop and get help and still have fluid in the case.
Thanks! You are 100 percent right! I was living on the edge 😉
Nah go all in
You can always take out the speed sensor and fill from there if you need

Doh!!! I should have done that. That's exactly how I filled up my Evo and Civic.

@@MaqsVids did you try to aligne the linkage I had no 5th gear engaging thinking 5th gear was gone but it turned out the linkage just needed Alignment

Just something my dad thought me
That is definitely the way to go. Better Safe than sorry.

Why didn’t you use vw oil?
It wasn't a conscious choice to NOT use VW oil. When I decided to do it, I just got what was available and local.
hi , did you ever have any issues jacking up on the tow hook? love the idea but scared of crushing it or something
Hi! I never have had any issues with it.
@@MaqsVids thank you, your videos are really helpful to do this ourselves since you show crucial steps that other videos dont
Good instructions and even nice camera work. Bleeding clutch will be harder for me . . . no wife.

Is this advice also accurate for an mk4 Golf TDI? How many total mounts does the trans have? I have this very issue. Thanks!
Nice job man ! Keep up the content.
Hey do the plugs have washers?
Had the same hand vacuum pump, it broke on day 1 of owning it lmao. Otherwise great video!
Thanks! Mine pump worked for a job or two...😐
Appreciate this video even though I have a 5sp auto!
Did this fix the issue? Mines doing the same thing where it grinds into first from neutral at lights? Worried my trans is going

brakes first,then cluch!
Always undo the filler plug first..just in case..and always use genuine VAG gear oil.
YES to removing the filling plug first!!!
Adi varso
Incorrect Redline Mtl can also be used
If you can't get the fill plug off you can take the speed sensor off and pour in fluid from the top. As long as you know how much you need
