They are two completely different instruments, and neither is a variant of the other nor comes from the other in any way. The mandolin comes from the ancient lute and the Portuguese guitar comes from the ancient citole. They share one important feature, though, wich is that they both have paired strings; that makes them look similar. I hope this helps, sir.

I must confess my ignorance about the fine differences between various musical instruments, though thankfully this ignorance does not prevent me from enjoying the sweet beauty of the music that these instruments produce in the hands of expert composers and artistes.
