#Misfits #138 #Documentary
It’s difficult to know exactly what type of impact The Misfits had very early on. Most punk bands during this time had pretty small followings and this was long before the advent of the internet and social media. But we do know that they had some pretty die hard fans. One of them being Henry Rollins. Rollins of course is famously known for his time in Black Flag. The infamous hardcore punk band from California, originally formed by Keith Morris and Gregg Ginn.
Corrections & Further Reading:
1. Walk Among Us was officially released in 1982, however there was a promo cassette schedule for release in 1981. (It was subsequently cancelled).
www.discogs.com/release/14089131-Misfits-Walk-Among-Us
2. Whilst Eerie Von was never an official member of The Misfits, however he did record background vocals, bass and drums for them in 1986/7. Songs that would be released on "Collection II".
3. Blondie: Yes. Blondie was the name of the band. The singer was called Debbie Harry. The band though was named Blondie as this is what Debbie Harry used to get called in the street. Throughout her entire career she has been commonly known as Debbie Harry and Blondie.
4. Samhain (Pronunciation) There are plenty of video interviews right here on UA-cam where members of the group [Samhain], and the people interviewing them, pronounce "Samhain" the same way I have. There is a Gaelic festival called "Samhain" which is pronounced "Sauin", these are not the same thing. Here is London May as just one example: ua-cam.com/video/jwpO3ordqBM/v-deo.htmlsi=SXYnaQMpLNxx1V8_&t=269
880😅
Glenn has always said the band is “Samhain”. The festival is “Saa-wn”.
I met Glenn in 1987 or 1988. He was such a nice guy. At some point I mentioned loving his singing style and he said, "Yeah, I'm better than that guy from Journey, huh?" He was a riot.
Yeah, I met him in 92 or 93. He was a nice, self-deprecating guy.
He was a riot laying on the floor with his eyes rolled back in his head after trying to play tough guy with Danny Marianino too. That lasted like 1.6 seconds. Danzig is a huge piece of shit. 😂
Same here! although everybody told me he is a prick, in fact was a very nice guy
The Misfits influence on punk, metal, and gothic art is unmatched
Amen🤘
Hells yeah
Glenns influence is
A bunch of art school closet case cock suckers desperately hoping that fishnet shirts and skull tshirts will make them look tough and not get their teeth kicked out despite the fact they'd cry like little bitches if you flicked them in the nose real hard. The Misfits boasted about being underground and "real" punk but are the most commercial and accessible "punk" band ever. They're a brand, a fashion line. They're basically KISS knockoffs and KISS sucked cock, balls and butthole too...even though they were for "real rockers."
Hell f'kin yeah!! Damn near 40 years ago as a teenager my very first tattoo I did on myself was MISFITS on my arm and not long after that I was covered in tattoos and many of them are either Misfits or Danzig related. On my right arm from about the middle of my calf muscle down to the bottom of my wrist I have the picture of the angel and demon that is on the Danzig Black Aria album done by a really famous amazing tattoo artist and even all these years later it still looks perfect. Yeah they definitely were one of the biggest influences on my life. I've been punk as shit all my life and always will...
Samhain was light years ahead of their time. It’s pathetic how little people paid attention to the band when they were active.
I agree 100 percent
Saw them 3 times with a tour for each record. The band even partied with us after the shows! Pretty cool in the mid-80s.
My first show that my older brother took me to was Danzig & Samhain (he knew I loved The Misfits.) It was the most violent show I've ever seen. The venue let too many ppl have in and the gangs were going at it. I was scared, shocked, and amazed. Ppl being dragged out unconscious and on stretchers it was nuts. I still have Danzig's autograph on my wall.
I was born in 1987 so i never got to see OG misfits or Samhain in their prime .. but i saw Samhain reunion show on Halloween like 10+ years ago and the first misfits OG show at riot fest Denver 2016
@Crazy Carl I saw their show at the other Riot Fest 2016 in Chicago. People came from all around the globe to see the reunion. There were so many killer bands that year.
If you don't have a team, and you're putting these docs out on your own as quickly as you are, you are a machine.
It's just me myself and I 🤘🏻
Fantastic doc! Reall loved it, man! I was a bit surprised there was no mention of James Hetfield's uncredited contribution on Twist Of Cain and Possession for Glen's solo debut album, though. Unless i just missed it. That said, this is a Misfits doc. Hope you do one for Danzig one day!
I was a huge Samhain and Danzig fan growing up. Didn't really get into The Fits until my late 20's but absolutely love them now. 🤘😈🤘
Glenn is a master wordsmith. Those Misfits and Samhain lyrics, also early Danzig, the guy was lit up with inspiration, untouchable.
I love the Danzig Misfits since the age of 13, I'm 47 now. So nostalgic. Great Documentary....
Same,going on fifty
43. The Misfits and Samhain had me since i was 10!
Same I will be 47 in 9 days. Great music… Michael Graves had a good voice but it just wasn’t the same without Glen
Same here, so good, when danzig left they should not have used the name misfits anymore
40 now, first remember hearing static age at 15 and loved it. Just put it on at work today
Famous Monsters is one of those rare albums that you can listen from start to finish. It's criminally underrated as is Michael Graves. A masterpiece imo.
Agreed.
I mean.... it's okay, but comparing the different interations of the band is apples and oranges. Graves Misfits will never be THE Misfits to me. It's like a different band. So much of the Misfits vibe was Glenn Danzig's voice. The Graves fronted iteration is another animal entirely.
@@HALLOWEENSLASHER Graves is garbage.
Michealle Grubby is for hair metal
I didn't like the old Misfits. I didn't even bother buying a Misift album until 1998 or 99, being Famous Monsters after hearing it at a store. Listened to the old stuff and I'm not into purposely sht sounding music with yelling and static filled recordings.
You make great documentaries man, keep it up, I always enjoy watching these 🔥🔥🔥
I’m 51 now and loved the misfits in the 80’s. My friends and I would copy misfits cassette tapes for each other and run them till they wore out. 😊
Awesome video! As a huge fan, there was some stuff in there that I didn't know yet, so that's always cool. Thanks for putting this together👌🖤🤘
The Misfits are one of my favorite bands of all time. Such amazing work by them. A unique blend of horror elements with punk music, it’s so iconic.
Have the crimson ghost and the song (138) tattooed on my forearm. An incredible band, which for some reason saved my life. Will forever be grateful for them. Danzig and Samhain are great too, but Misfits (with Danzig or Graves, it's both good) are unmatchable.
Don't listen to them nowadays too much because I literally got bored man (you know when you spin something at least a million times), but when I do, it takes me back to my 16 year old summer.
138 forever, forever 138!
I have the same tattoos. Those and a werewolf as Misfits tributes.
So you have good taste!
I worked at a record store in Dearborn Michigan in the late 90's. The Misfits were on tour for Famous Monsters, they played a sh*t bar called Harpos. The next day some old school misfit fan came in the shop and sold us ALL of his misfits records. ALL of them. Even some rare 7" ones that were mentioned in your video. When asked, why are you selling them?! His response was "Michael Graves was embarrassing to watch, he mimicked David lee Roth with leg kicking and grabbing himself, FCK THAT"....The staff almost broke out into fights to see who has dibs on this dudes collection lol The boss sadly grabbed it all and put it away. I later found it all, I guess he forgot to stashed it. I kept a few things for myself, and sold the rest to a friend.
Its like when people got mad about girl ghostbusters. Just a whiney crybaby. Proof that most “punks” are just brats who take their ball and go home when they can’t win
Nice find
Fellow michigander here to confirm Harpos is terrible 🤣
Which store was it? Dearborn Music? I don’t think Stormy Records was around just yet.
dearborn music when it was on the corner?
This is one I’m surprised you haven’t done yet. Great job it’s definitely the best one on UA-cam!
A great little documentary! 🦇🎃💀🎸
Love the vintage school pic's! No matter how far out in the fringe a person was, we wore a clean collared shirt and a tie for school pictures. Gotta pick your battles and that one just wasn't worth fighting. Semper Fidelis! 💪
Punk tended to lean toward political and social issues, but The Misfits/Samhain leaned into horror and the occult which made them unique in that way. Danzig’s singing was also a bit Elvis/Morrison-like at times and was a dynamic to the music of the band. Very cool.
Salutations & Happy Sunday my friend!! Earlier on I was putting a playlist together for my project. I am now taking a break WITH a handy dandy "Jethro sized" bowl of Pumpkin spice Special K cereal. I sat down, turned on UA-cam & I am presently watching your video on The Misfits. This is JUST what the doctor ordered ! (and of course) Once again, your content is absolutely fantastic! When I get paid this week, I am DEFINITELY becoming an official member of your channel. They say punk is dead...they say aggressive music is dead. They say, "times change blah blah blah" WELL, @ 58 years of age, it's still alive and kicking in MY heart! Be well, brother
🤘😈🤘
Hell yeah brother!! This music will NEVER DIE!!! WE keep it alive!
@@RAWMUSICTV ABSOLUTELY SIR!! \m/
Saw the "orginal" lineup last june. Insane performance
My son in law Kris Powell i think the greatest Misfit fan i ever met. 138 bro. Love it. He's still playing bass in a band.
Might not be 100% correct but "Samhain" is a gaelic festival to mark the end of the harvest season. Modern halloween can trace its routes back to this festival. It's pronounced "Sow In", could very likely be the inspiration for the name!
Great videos been watching for years 🤘
Yes, thats what we call Halloween in Ireland, Samhain.
True. But it's always been pronounced "sam-HANE" in reference to the band.
@@christinapalafox ...in America ! Thats because Americans are, well.... Americans !
Fans possibly pronounced it this way, but I wonder if it was the original intent. My guess is it was sowan. I had the sticker on my car (1988) and pronounced it sam-hain because I didn't know.
Great video! I really appreciate something i can commit to watching.
I was somewhat late to the Misfits party but have slotted them in my guitar repertoire. I love the simplicity of that classic punk rock sound. They're peppered all over my gym playlist along side many of the hardcore bands from that early era
Really enjoyed this video, well done!
Kind of funny that it started with "Dig up her bones". I love that lp, but to many, it's not true Misfits. Thanks for including it.
Very well done! Huge misfits fan since the 80‘s, but I haven't found so much new information anywhere else! 👍
The misfits was blearing out of a house on Halloween when I was a kid
Fantastic doco! Misfits, Maiden, Motorhead, GBH, & Ramones were the points in my pentagram. Great Fkn Channel!
Walk Among Us was recorded at Mix-o-Lydian studio in Boonton NJ, which is located on TWO major highways-- 202 & I287. I was in the studio just weeks after the recording sessions with another NJ Band... and the story was that the Misfits were so loud during their sessions that you could hear them from across all 6 lanes of the highways.
Mix-o-Lydian is long gone... replaced by a McDonalds.
Honestly surprised you didn't cover more of their merch. The Misfits were/are essentially a t-shirt company with a soundtrack. For long stretches of their career (even the classic era) you could get a shirt easier than a record
Great content I’m subscribing from Australia.
Cool Hellacopters tattoo!
This has needed to be done for so long, thank you, brother.
It is worth noting that Cliff Burton, Bassist of Metallica, was a huge Misfits fan just like his colleges in Metallica who covered a lot of theyr songs thruout the 80s and released them as B-Sides and later on theyr famous Garage Days EP/Garage Inc Album. But the influence the Misfits hold in the Metal-Scene is far bigger than just Metallica as there are countless of Metal Bands in all different Subgenres who call the Misfits a massive influence.
Also James from Metallica guested on the songs "Possession" and "Twist Of Cain" from the Danzit debut.
Also,the dudes from Absurd love the Misfits iirc.
@Stefan979- did not know that James was on there. Don't remember the Cassette saying anything and Vinyl was not available where I'd moved to. Vinyl was the only way to get anything to read, flyers, lyrics, other hand inserted items and sometimes the Vinyl was very heavy duty material. Misfits cassettes I remember being very muddy sounding. Still have some of them, most of my collection was lost or destroyed/discarded or other in a move.
@davidr1676 Listen to the chorus of Twist Of Cain,it's clear as day.
And as far as I remember,he wasn't mentioned anywhere there due to contractual shenanigans.
That's the reason I found out about them. They were totally unheard of in the UK until Metallica advertised them.
This is all common knowledge!!!
Man these are fantastic, but you gotta do longer form, we would love an hr long vid (at least) on these!! So much more stories to be told!!! 30ish minutes is no where near enough!!!!
Great Doc on the Misfits!
I quite dig the Misfits in all of their eras,although the Glenn Danzig fronted material still reigns.
And some of the related content,like Samhain(which I'm very glad got mentioned),Danzig,Kryst The Conqueror and Doyle's solo stuff.
I still remember buying the first Dazing album (on cassette) the day it came out. On the same day, Warner (Ruby) re-released Walk Among us so happy day. Then he played at a local club in Detroit. 1988 was amazing. My friends and I ended up seeing Danzig 3 times in that period.
That was awesome! I kind of want to watch these old Horror Movies now 🧛🏻♀
Ah, cheeky! I was wondering what was going on until you did the piece on the origin of the Fiend skull. Love it, cheers!
💀
That was really great. Thanks for this well done recap of such an iconic band. I learned a few things today. Cheers
At first, I wanted nothing to do with Misfits without Danzig. And it took me a year maybe or two before I gave it a chance. Now I'm kicking my own ass for not checking it out sooner! I love the Graves era Misfits now!!
Glad I found this channel love your content 👍🏼
Am I Demon is one of my favorite songs ever. Almost worth the Misfits breaking up to have it.
Two albums I have had in my vinyl collection since I was a kid. Misfits - Earth A.D. and Samhain - November Coming Fire. Still throw those albums on and listen to them to this day.
Thanks. This is definitely a superior Misfits biography, most on YT are garbage.
I think nearly anyone who tries drugs that young either ends up f up , dead , in jail but most don't quit early which in my mind says much about Glenn's belief in his own talent , his vision , drive and intelligence. Watching this I found so much more in common with him than I knew. Always been a fan and inspired my taste in music but this one has some new stuff for me. 🙏 Thanks !
Love this channel!
Fantastic watch! Amazing content and presentation
I got into the Misfits/Samhain during the summer of 1987 when a friends older sister gave me a C90 cassette copy of Legacy of Brutality and some of the early EPs. I wore that tape out! I played it so much, that even my Dad started randomly singing the chorus of Where Eagles Dare! 😂 I'm just glad that I went Misfits crazy in the early '90s and managed to pick up all their old vinyl and bootlegs when it was still affordable. Imho, Static Age and 12 Hits From Hell are two of the greatest Punk albums ever made. It's kinda weird though, because technically they aren't even really proper album releases!
Do you like Rosemary's Babies, or the Undead? Also, Mourning Noise.
@@GilbertSyndrome Yeah, I like all that stuff, but I don't own much. I've got the OG Act Your Rage LP, the Blood Lust 7" and the Death Trip Delivery compilation CD
@Rr0gu3_5uture All good stuff. Eerie is selling Rosemary's Babies vinyl, I got the black/red version and the regular from him. I've only got the Morgue the Merrier on vinyl from Bobby, but I hope to get some more one day. Son of Sam is excellent too, but not easy to get hold of. They're all on Spotify though at least. 🍻🦇
Funny this was also the same summer I got into them and still am an hardcore Misfits fan today. The only difference was, it was all Die, Die My Darling for me. To this day, I still consider this song as one of the greatest punk song ever written. I even played bass in the Undead in 1999 for all his dates in Eastern Canada.
Those first four Danzig albums are top shelf.
Few things are better.
Horror movies combined with music, same thing Tommi Iommi was going for when he started Black Sabbath. It's a great hook, no doubt worked for Sabbath and The Misfits too. Thanks for the video my friend, good stuff! 👍 👍
I like the album Famous Monsters. Especially "Scream!"
In 1985 my cousin gave me a 90 minute cassette mix tape that was all misfits, black flag, bad religion and dead kennedys. Van halen, ratt and ozzy didn't get played on my ghetto anymore.
Ah, yes. Lodi, NJ, and their magnificent traffic circle! Also, the former hometown of Callahan's, and just down the road (10 minutes-ish) from White Manna in Hackenslash
Saw them last August (2024) in Austin. Heck of a show! The energy never let up. 🤘🏻💀🤘🏻
80's Misfits were ahead of their time
My favorite band in the whole world. We are 138!
The live song was one of the only songs I'd replay over before moving on but return to We Are 138 before switching the vinyl.
The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve grown to appreciate Muddy Waters. The Allman Brothers did a cover of his song “You Can’t Lose What You Never Had” that my Dad used to play for me when I was little. Highly recommend it…incredible Black American music going back a long way. I now get why he was an influence to so many artists of my generation.
So glad I lived through the punk era, i still remember reading Sid Vicious's death news in the newspaper so long ago. I was fascinated by punk, it wasnt long before I was in a band and loving punk lifestyle
Misfits were always a band I was vaguely aware of but as I was into metal, I was one of those "you can only listen to one genre" kind of people. Kinda sad when I think back but I like them a lot now. I had a friend who would always wear Misfits gear, but he was a legit fan.
I have never pressed play on a video so fast....
💯😂😎✌️
"1977" explosion of punk"? Maybe in the U.K. but here in the U.S. it was a very underground thing. You couldn't find punk records in record stores until the late 80s. Like they might have some Devo albums or something, that was it. Punk never ever got radio airplay until stuff like The Offspring & Green Day, many years later. Punk was America's worst nightmare, no one wanted to know about it except as a freak show on Donahue or Quincy.
That really puts things into perspective, I was born in 1991, the Misfits and early punk were huge part of skater culture. Never realized we were not far removed from when these bands became widely known.
Early 80's in SF had plenty of record shops that sold demo tapes and 45 RPM's, SoCal was way behind on this.
Great video. Thanks for this one.
Came here for the MISFITS, subbed for the rest! Next up, Minor Threat...
Many decades later and their music will never get old.
The Misfits and Danzig are my favorite bands
you ever check out Cancerslug?
@@bczarrockbeast6264 Cancerslug rules!
I bet Glenn is still scared by Plan 9 From Outer Space, but he doesn't want to admit it.
Its ok,2 be haunted by what we love,and its ok,2 not be obvious,is it not???
My fave era is the Michael Graves era. Though Danzig is a fucking legend. I watched the crimson ghost movie because of them taking his mask as their logo!
I remember seeing the misfits on TV back in 1978 or 79. It was a clip of them playing live. I was just as intrigued by them as I was huge KISS fan in 1976. I was just a little kid, 7 or 8 years old, but I was already a huge music fan. At the time I was still trying to come down from hearing Van Halen for the first time. My uncle always had me come and listen to whatever new albums he would bring home. I wouldn't become a fan until high school in 1985. A friend of mine gave me a cassette of the Misfits Walk among US. I was hooked after that and then Metallica covered the Misfits on their Garage Days album. They did a great job with both Last Caress and Green Hell. I still get the same mystical feeling when I listen to the Misfits. Kinda like watching a good horror flick.
This band has changed my life forever!!!
Always loved Danzig songs "Am I Demon", "Killer Wolf", "Her Black Wings" and "Mother" 🤘🏼
This was excellent! Only 2 small errors I caught were: Walk Among Us came out in 82 (not 81) and Eerie Von was never a member of the Misfits. Nicely done all around
He was never an official member, but he did play/overdub bass guitar and drums tracks on two songs off the the Collection II compilation: Hate Breeders and Mephisto Waltz.
@Rr0gu3_5uture yes I'm aware, but that was years after the Misfits had broken up, during Samhain, as you know
@@Astro_FiveIt's still pretty debatable, imo. He was on a collection of Misfits songs, which arguably makes him a Misfit as much as it makes Mephisto Waltz a Samhain song. 🤷
~~~Great Doc!!! I would love to hear more about the early years in Lodi. I always thought they were from New York~~~
You have a chill narrator voice/ 🎉I support this
Once again another interesting documentary
Walk Among Us is the best 30-odd minutes in Rock n Roll history 💀
Great channel! I have just recommended you to my child - another metal and punk fan. One slip in this one though: 10:45 Blondie was not a person, it was a band, and the other members were very important - Debby Harry did form the band but the songs were written by different combinations or individuals in the band.
The band was named Blondie because that's what she used to get called in the street when men would cat call her. She is known as blondie and Debbie Harry. I kind of thought people just knew this. It's great to know younger generations, like your kid, are appreciating excellent music. 1st class parenting 🤘🏻
@@RAWMUSICTV I did know that, but just because some truck drivers called her blondie, doesn't mean everybody else did. I am 53 and been a Blondie fan since about ''79 (eight years old, Heart of Glass) and have never heard anyone call her blondie, especially not in a documentary. The first time I heard about the truckies was when I researched it for my comment.
Thanks but all I can claim as far as parenting good music taste has been playing the music. I guess that's enough when it is good stuff.
Saw them a couple times in the early 80s at dive bars in and around the D. Great shows! Definitely one of the more raucous, diverse, memorable, and scary of the punk shows at that time.
I saw Danzig with Korn and Marilyn Manson as openers at a club in Myrtle Beach,South Carolina,a loooong time ago.
man that’s an amazing lineup
@tylermuecke7875 yes,and no one disappointed! That was the first time I had OF Korn and to hear and see such a BIG voice coming out of tiny Jonathan Davis was a great experience 👏that I will never forget!!!
Misfits are legendary & I love this doc, very well done guys.! One little suggestion though please llose the background music when you're narrator's talking ...it's very annoying and completely unnecessary
One of those interview clips that’s shown a few times with Glenn was from MTV’s Headbangers Ball. I may still have that on VHS somewhere.
When MTV was good.
The Damned, Misfits are the best punk bands ever created.
Do The Damned get mentioned? I always thought Dave Vanian was the first horror punk.
Luv your statement,but Pistols shows were really the birth of mosh,and agents of chaos,and if you factor in,The Who,,,well,,,right there is the beginning of the agression,imean not just Keith Moon,but Pete,man you had 2 see this comin,,,Nuff said....Glencifer,4.16.66...
@@glenstrickland1513 pretty sure iggy and the stooges would disagree with you, their live shows were infamous
I first heard The Misfits in 1994 when I was introduced to punk at College in Texas although I grew up in England in the early 80s (Not allowed). Was able to see them a couple years later with Megadeth (Minus Danzig) jammin to a full house at a good sized open air venue in San Antonio (Sunken Gardens). Couple years after that I saw Danzig on a tour which had 100 bands over 3 days (November to Dismember).
Halloween party last night, Misfits were in heavy rotation 🖤
I saw The Misfits with Jerry singing and it was honestly still a great time. The whole band sounded good and they were a ton of fun. I saw them another time with Zoli Téglás (from Ignite) and that show was great as well. I'd love to experience both of these shows again at my age and just take it all in again. Also, Zoli's voice is incredible.
"A vampire cocktail... you like it?... It hates YOU."
That was great good job buddy
I absolutely love Danzig era but I also love Michael graves vocals❤
Luck enough to see them live in San Francisco 82' and Phoenix AZ in 83' before they broke up.
Good documentary, mate. 🍻🦇
Yo!
How did I not know Henry sings We are 138?
Great video mate
Good stuff, keep up the good work!
Saw The Misfits back in 2017 in Vegas when they got back together. Fucking awesome show and they killed it.
Peter Steele was supposed to sing for misfits n graves was teaching him the songs n he convinced the misfits to let graves take over since he "sang better than him" according to graves in a recent podcast interview
Danzig Misfits Samhain from the moment of first heard Glenn’s voice I was under his spell. My first tattoo was The Misfits. I met Glenn even. My favorite song is Archangel. I love horror movies Glenn was just my hero man 🖤🖤🖤
I'm from Lodi NJ let me tell you a little something. Glen and Jerry were fighting over two things for twenty years. Music & Merch. Jerry ended up Using the name and Playing the tunes.. And Glen got the merch.
It always comes down to money. I wish they'd get the rights to Samhain's releases sorted.
Great doc!
Another awesome documentary I would love to see one on anthrax or motorhead
Man I love me some Misfits. They have had a huge influence on my life especially my youth.
When I was a kid, I used to think the chorus part of I turned into a Martian said I turned into Martian, I can’t even comb my hair.😂
I had a friend that thought ‘Teenagers from Mars’ was ‘Teenage Lamaze’
