We need a Keith Lee for black hair salons. Someone like Tabatha Coffey, but a black woman. Back in the day you couldn’t dare sit in a salon chair without getting a shampoo. I actually thought it was against state regulations.

This!!! I make it a first habit to check Google reviews ... Not for the review.. but to see how a business responds to a review. On so many occasions I see good reviews aren't given a thank you ... Negative reviews will get you cursed out by the owner! RED FLAG

I think stylists do this simply because they can. A lot of times people don’t say anything when they’re dissatisfied (hair didn’t turn out right, nails are messed up, etc) so they have become comfortable with delivering subpar service.

Tried to make an appointment to get my hair braided, called the place, and they said you can come in 20 minutes but we'll charge you a walk in fee. Tell me why they're talking about charging me a walk in fee while I'm literally on the phone asking what time I could come in

    • @OpinionatedBlues

A walk-in fee is for if you walk in without setting an appointment and expect service same day. They need to get it together, that’s completely unacceptable.

There was a lady who was a friend of a friend, who would come to your house to do braids for $100. Not bad for Chicago. However, the problem is you had to pick her up and take her home, you had to buy your own hair, you had to feed her, she stayed on the phone with her baby daddy and her crazy family, and then she had a baby and the baby came with her. Either she had to stop to look after the baby or you did. This was my first and last experience with this person.

A lady I went to school with is a licensed stylist. My daughter and I have gone to her several times throughout the years.
I recently cut my locs...😒 and I wanted my hair braided for a trip...NOW, I wanted singles in a bob. That's right...I wanted the Maxine Shaw attorney at law tingz.
This girl had the nerve to tell me she wanted 560.00.......$$$560.00.
Now my locs were to my butt. My daughter's are shoulder length and she charged me 300.00 for us both.
It didn't make sense. So, I bought myself some braiding hair and spent 3 days braiding my hair before my trip. And been doing it since!

I haven't been to a hair stylist since 2014. A woman I worked with at the time referred me to her stylist. I asked the stylist did she know how to do natural hair. She said yes. Went there to get my hair flatironed. When the stylist finished my hair was so thin and lifeless. No bounce and greasy. It was a disaster. Found out later after be evaluated by another stylist she mixed RELAXER in the deep conditioner that she used. My hair texture has not been the same ever since. I'm still traumatized.

I worked as a nail tech for almost 20 years. These new age stylist and nail techs are off the chain. My prices stayed pretty much the same for the years I was in business. High key, most of the nails they are doing ,I did years ago.
I never had to wash my hair before service. And if I did my stylist would discount her service. If she was late, she would discount her service. This industry has become ridiculous. As well as the food service industry. Which, I work as a pastry chef and time is up on this too.

I’m so happy you made a video about this. It has gotten out of hand and it is ridiculous!! I had a bad experience two years ago on the Style Seat app. I had an appointment for micro links extensions, for my birthday. I booked her ahead of time, and she tried to change the appointment twice on me. I told her no because I took the day off work for that specifically and unfortunately I couldn’t. Long story short the day before she said she couldn’t do my hair and she kept my deposit, and tried to charge my card for the service too. I had to book someone last minute and thank god the Dominican hairstylist squeezed me in and really saved my birthday. It’s hard to support black businesses because they have the worst customer service, charge ridiculous prices and are rude as hell. She was so nasty to me and I did nothing wrong.

My first experience with African hair braided was as follows- I called the shop, I made an appointment, I had to wash my own hair ( I am ok with this, because I might want to add color to get rid of the grey😊and deep condition my hair) I was told what the price would be before I came. The appointment was on time, they provided the hair, the put in a couple braids to make sure, that is what I wanted, and it only took 3 hours to do my hair. Yes, this is where I have gone for the last 2 years.

I have been double booked a few times. The same stylist did the same thing to my niece. Then she proceeded to tell her she needs to understand that when you book on the weekend that it can go over an hour or two before she’s able to get to her (with an appointment ). She was 30 min late one time too.
Then, If we stop going to salons, they would start washing hair again. It’s ridiculous to have to come with your hair washed. I’m a lazy natural cause I work so much. I barely have time to fart let alone spending all day washing my hair. I’d rather pay someone else to do it.

EVERYTHING SAID WAS ALL #FACTS I do my own hair and my own nails. I used to do my nails and my friends Nails back in the 90's for extra money while in high school. Once I seen these prices go up after the pandemic, I brought out my old skill and have not went back. I refuse to pay $150 every 2 weeks for a fill in, design, and pedicure. That's $300 a month. That's a car note!
It's not just like this in hair salons, it the same across mostly all of the black businesses! I'm from Atlanta and I have seen the clear shift. I'm in the mecca of black businesses. I am surrounded by them. I'm in walking distance to them, and I don't support them. 🤷🏾‍♀️ I prefer to save my money, go where I'm appreciated, and leave without my blood pressure rising. I checked out years ago. I got sick and tired of the entitled attitudes. They have no accountability when they are in the wrong. They barely even greet you. They don't smile and they are very monotone when speaking with you, making it clear they don't feel like dealing with you. When they know they have dropped the ball, and they have to do something for you, they are very monotone and do it with a very nonchalant attitude. Basically they are letting you know that they don't feel like doing right but they really don't have a choice. And don't hold your breath waiting for an apology. That's a 50/50 chance. When they are in the wrong, and don't want to refund or compensate you, they start telling you about their personal problems while trying their best to place some blame on you. Anything they do for you is reluctantly and with an attitude. I have so many horror stories from when I used to support them. I could no longer except the rudeness and lack of customer service. You can never trust the information on the website, the business hours, or assume someone will answer the phone. Too many of them are unprofessional. They're demeanor, attitude, and how they run their business sucks! #ISaidWhatISaid 🤷🏾‍♀️

This is a very good topic as a stylist of over 25 years it’s disheartening to see how watered down this art form as become. Stylists have forgotten how important education, cleanliness, customer care and service. With COVID there was a boom of stylists which is great but it was a get rich quick scheme and a lot was missed in the ebooks they ran to. It’s important to become licensed while treating hair and nails. You learn things in school that you may miss being self taught. It’s unfortunate this behavior puts a damper on stylists who really care for their clients. Thanks for covering this topic! It needed some light shed on it. Much love and more hair to the stylists in the chat!

Voodoo you need to open up a shop ASAP.
I can tell you have a good spirit and a healing energy that people need. My grandma would always say that special people who genuinely care about uplifting other women should only be doing hair. People don’t understand that customer service and energy is everything. I’ve had a stylist be very rude and act as if providing a service was a burden. The next girl I went to had a newborn and had to stop, but she was super sweet and very professional. I even helped her with her baby and she offered to take $20 off my service. I declined bc I knew she was a single mom but til this day she’s the only person I let touch my hair. We talk periodically and now she has her own shop. I really appreciate her and she encourages me to start my own braid business as well.
The salon is suppose to be about nourishment and a safe space for women. Those stylist who give off bad energy need to reevaluate how they treat their customers.

I thank you for this video because as a stylist who's working salons I got tired of working in the salons because of them not wanting to be accountable for what they supposed to do as a stylist like be on time and not overbooked
When you have that stylist that wants to be on time you get looked at like something's wrong with you when you're that stylist that wants to set boundaries in the schedule you look at look down like something is wrong with you and I have dealt with that
I've had my clients prefer to come to my house instead and I stopped working in salons a lot of people think that when you work in salons that gives you more clientele and like they be helping you out know a real stylist can make money anywhere in their house or in the salon the only difference is in a salon there's walk-ins in your house there are no walk-ins but if you know how to promote yourself like I do passing out my business cards making flyers and grocery stores in different places and talk to people when I see people you can build a clientele
I remember when I wanted to come in at 7:00 and leave around 3:00 because I'll notice that working in the salon I was working almost every day of the week and I will be there from sunup to sundown and they were fine with that I didn't like that cuz you missing cookout and missing birthday parties you're missing just hanging out with friends you miss a lot of stuff unless you take a day off and I wasn't into taking days off like that
The owner would make appointments for herself at 8:00 and wouldn't show up until 11:00 and those people waited and I never understood why she wasn't even like the best stylist in her own shop but they would wait but it does happen and I'm glad that it's being talked about and if you have to lose business because of it so be it maybe you'll learn and I do know a lot of stylist that has part-time jobs

Licensed cosmetologist here (for 15 years) ✋🏽I will say this, running behind doesn’t always mean “overbooking”. A client running 15 mins late, now puts you behind 15 mins. Now imagine 2 clients running 15 mins late, now that stylist is 30 mins behind. I’m not saying that’s the case for every stylist, some will intentionally overbook, some will rely on assistants for shampoos and braid downs, I’ve never been that stylist. Many of these stylist are inflated by social media, and being pumped up while providing subpar service. I’ve seen other stylist I work with do the same. Stop in the middle of press and curls to eat, God forbid they have celebrity clients, the rest will be pushed aside and treated like crap. The salon culture has gone down tremendously, it use to be fun, a time to have good conversation, and relax.
Understand that there are some stylist (me being one of them) that’s SHAMPOOS hair (I don’t wash hair, I shampoo) deep condition, work hours with no breaks, not even a bathroom break, braid down my own clients, and treats every client like they are spending $500 plus even though they aren’t. I however sometimes run late bc things happen.

This doesn't have anything to do with racism. This has to do greed and laziness. These black stylists want to live like stars without putting in the work. They also don't consider their target market. For example. Mexicans will make affordable plates with 5 dollar tacos for hardworking ppl. They'll work hard and end up with a thriving tsqueria. Black ppl will serve 40.00 lamb during a recession and be shut down within a year.
