DCO = digitally controlled pitch and wave forms. It's still analog as Dave Smith will explain to you in full detail. As long as the synths have VCF's and VCA's, it is a true analog path even with "DCO's" (which is a horrible term for them but that's what happened) He experimented with Vector Synthesis which is part of the Korg M1's brain that he worked on, and that basically changed music forever and made the 90s what it is today.

Can i use beatstep pro to change roland tr 8 patterns via midi? Save different patterns on beatstep pro and send and change it via midi on tr 8? Play tr8 by beatstep ( midi out to tr8) and change patterns recorded in beatstep? To make variations
+GoodModeOn You should be able to do this by setting both the TR-8 and BSP's 'Drum' sequencer to MIDI channel 10 and writing the patterns in the 'Drum' sequencer. Change the patterns by creating multiples and switching between them...

Looks like a great piece of hardware.. Dark Grey vs Black though? Lol.. I feel like you could have done a little better with the indication colors, Arturia.
Beginner here. "Always use the grey cable for the MIDI. Always use the black cable for the DIN sync." What is a DIN sync??? Isn't DIN an umbrella term for 5-pin MIDI connectors? Aren't both the grey and black MIDI and DIN ?
Correct, DIN refers to the connector type not the information carried on the cable. "DIN sync," is used to differentiate from the other set of sync in/outs which are 1/8" mono jacks for use with standard CV cables (*not* DIN adapters like the MIDI and DIN sync jacks). BSP has both of these
Hi! For the beatstep pro I have a moog voyager xl and a nord drum 2...all channels (6 ) of the nord drum are connected separately on cv, just like the moog. How can I use them with ableton? I mean how could I connect them to eachother and what should I do in the ableton? Please help! :)
Is it normal that my midi keyboard connected to the MIDI IN of the BSP can only play monophonic while the BSP pads can play chords ? The MIDI OUT is connected to a poly-synth. I am well talking about playing (with fingers, you know), i know the recorded sequences are monophonic anyway. Please help, this pishmeh off.
Ok, can someone tell me how could you use the beat step like a Maschine or Mpc? I, personally don't see myself falling in love with the concept of modular use. All of this repetition that many times really don't sound very musical at all. I'm not saying that the concept it self sucks, but this device seems so cool yet it doesn't come with any drum software...where's the bang for my buck at?
M. Williams It is a sequencer. Sequencers have no sounds. Only control messages for other gear. You say it is repetitive, which, in the case of step sequencers (and this video) is true, only when you realize that with this one you have 2 melodic sequencers with 64 steps each, and then 16 patterns per sequencer and 16 projects ( = 16 x 16 x 2 sequences that can be 64 measures long AND a drumsequencer with 16 patterns x 16 projects too) and then you have all these control outputs at the back, i would say this is a pretty impressive piece of gear. But yes, you will need synths, drumcomputers, and/or a computer to generate sounds. That is one thing this thing does not do.
Hey Arturia, I never need to mute all of my drums at the same time. What i do need to do is jam and perform with muting and unmuting drum parts. Can you make the "mute" button on the drum sequencer enter into a "mute mode" where the drum parts can be muted and unmuted without having to hold anything down? And in this mode if the muted parts were dark and the unmuted parts were lit up with the LED that would be a great addition... Maybe the "drum"+"mute" could be the "mute all parts" function? Amazing product! could be slightly more amazing and musical with this small change! Love You! Brett
I wonder if it's possible to assign each knob to different midi channels? In the Midi Control Center it looks like it but I only get out on one midi channel? Thanks!!

im confused about the drum sequencer... most peopel i see they control a modular drum module with the gate outputs and they have up to 8 sounsd they can conrol like that.. but what about over midi?let's say i wanna connect the BSP to a volca drums (using the midi out) or to my ipad or PC using the midi over USB... can i use the 16 pads to control a drum rack?
Hi Fayekhelmi, Yes you can perfectly do this! The limitat of 8 parallel drum tracks only applies to the gate outputs. By MIDI or USB you can take advantage of all the 16 parallel tracks. The MIDI COntrol Center will give you much freedom regarding the assignation of the MIDI notes and channels linked to each track. Best regards,
Let’s imagine i have no idea how any of these new devices work, and I’ve been playing around with 80’s gear & loving it, but i like the lights on this & want to be able to play drums using one of these. What gear would i need to plug this in? I don’t have a daw, or any vst’s & prefer to use hardware... i noticed the access virus & have heard of those, any other options? Any help is much appreciated. :)
Arturia i still havent used midi or cv for anything... i should already know how to use this stuff, i know, but I’m way behind the times. I just got ahold of some rack gear in the last few years, and i wasn’t able to use them for 2 of those years... any suggestions on what to use this with, is what im really asking? If i want to make drum sounds? Hardware wise?
Hi! Actually there's some CV and Gate output on the rear panel. These are kind of "jack" port. You can use them with a hardware drum machine, like the Vermona Drm1 MkII for example. You just have to plug a cable between BeatStep Pro and this hardware drum machine. Then each BeatStep Pro's pad will be used to trigger drum sounds on the Drum Machine. You can do the same thing with synth, but with a cable for the pitch too. Then if your hardware gear has MIDI Input, you can just plug a MIDI cable from the BeatStep Pro to the hardware instrument and they'll be synced. Any action on the BeatStep Pro will be understood by your hardware instruments and it will create a sound :) If you need more details, I suggest you to get in touch with our support team with this link: www.arturia.com/support/askforhelp I’m sure they will be able to help you :) Best regards.

Hi I tried using a 1/8 trs to midi din adapter from a Korg electribe 2 on the midi out of beatstep pro, I can't get any midi to my synth. What is wrong? Are the arturia and Korg adapters built differently? If so how?
Hi Carlos, You should have received two cables with your Beatstep Pro. One is grey and is made for Midi and the other one is black and is made for clock. So I've got a problem I got an Modular , Dark Energy and TR-8 so the both Sequencers are giving Cv/Gate to the Modular & Dark Energy. The TR-8 is GETTING the BPM via Midi kable directly from the BSP. So far so Good ! Now if I'm using the Drumgates (the lower ones) to Control with the gate-outputs the modular , the TR-8 is also played or getting Gate inputs: For example i tippt in the TR-8 an 4/4 Kick and the drum sequenzer is playing 16 Steps the tr-8 plays 16 kicks per step.... For sure it got something to do with the Software somehow. I just want that the TR-8 and other Midi devices are getting the BPM per midi nothing else. what do i have to change in the settings ?
When you use the midi out i get it from sequencer 1 and 2 how can i change it to only get one wile using the cv out or will it automatically arrange itself

@@lucasc5622 i think thats a pretty important thing to have for it’s 500 dollar pricetag right now.
Looks like a great affordable beat sequencer for modular gear.
Any info on the best way to use it with Reason?
Does anyone know of a simple/inexpensive external voltage attenuator? I'd like to see if I could use the Beatstep Pro + MiniBrute + Moog Minitaur. The attenuator would be for the Minitaur.
+Eliah Holiday I am running the Beatstep Pro with the Minitaur. No attenuator needed.
Yes but as the output BSP is 10v and the Minitaur takes only up to 5v there's a chance you could fry the inputs of the Minitaur.
This is all very useful. But has anyone spotted the typo in the title? #pedantry
hahahahaha
+Marcus Efstratiou #spellingisimportant
Hehe a year later and the typo is still there :)

Received the beat step pro, connected via usb, and midi out to a Roland R-8, slaved the beat step to my Imac under Logic Pro, and if I hit start, the beat step had some mili seconds latency, not right to work with, while my Doepfer dark time, analog solutions oberkorn, and my DSI mono evolver sequenced perfect in time ... so I went to the Arturia midi center to firm ware the thing ... while updating the beat step the arturia freezed in update mode, and the midi center didn't recognised it anymore, so I left with a dead machine, I loged in to mu Arturia account, requested support, but after 3 days no answer from the company, so I returned the beatstep to bex shop for a new one, without support who is gone ensure me that this freeze isn't gone happen anymore, now or in a few moths or years, and that the beat step for the trash, problem is that the beat step is not a real hardware sequencer, but its software based, and buggy.

BSP has both of these
How would I link this gadget to a Elka x1000d, Alesis dm5, Roland GP16, Behringer Vamp 2 and a Yamaha Keyboard
That is one thing this thing does not do.
do you need to hook it up to a computer to do all those changes. Im tired of computers -:)
hi , i just got my BSP . what kind of cables shall we use ? add jacks cables ?
What about syncing midi in. I'm trying using my Digitakt but can seem to get it working. Help anyone?
Hey Arturia,
I never need to mute all of my drums at the same time.
Thanks!!
+sonicultura of course you can and it's very simple. In the Midi CC, just click on the knob and assign the midi channel you want to.
Is it possible to change the midi channel of each pad live without any computer? If not, is it possible to change live the midi channel of the drum sequencer at least? Thanks!
its just a shame the mini usb always seems to become faulty like mine has and theres no other way to power it.
WHAT?!
@@ThinkerThunker it doesn't take batteries or any other power supply other than mini usb so make sure your very careful . a small usb on a large item like this is a bit weak.
Hi , many thanks for your feedback .
I'm not using spark hardware .
You mean if I would like to use any drumsvst with my beatstep pro it has to be done within DAW ?
I tried on beatstep pro :
Vst vintage standalone and within Daw as my drum sequencer in BSP .
My Moog on seq 1 BSP .
Many thanks
can it control 2 midi synths simultaneously?
im confused about the drum sequencer... most peopel i see they control a modular drum module with the gate outputs and they have up to 8 sounsd they can conrol like that.. but what about over midi?let's say i wanna connect the BSP to a volca drums (using the midi out) or to my ipad or PC using the midi over USB... can i use the 16 pads to control a drum rack?
Hi Fayekhelmi,
Yes you can perfectly do this! The limitat of 8 parallel drum tracks only applies to the gate outputs. By MIDI or USB you can take advantage of all the 16 parallel tracks.
The MIDI COntrol Center will give you much freedom regarding the assignation of the MIDI notes and channels linked to each track.
Best regards,
is it a ok if you connect cv with Stereo 3.5 mini jack? or does it have to be mono?
can the beat step send chords to the access?
greta tutorial!!!
How can I sync my microbrute to the Beatstep Pro with CV ?
Let’s imagine i have no idea how any of these new devices work, and I’ve been playing around with 80’s gear & loving it, but i like the lights on this & want to be able to play drums using one of these. What gear would i need to plug this in? I don’t have a daw, or any vst’s & prefer to use hardware... i noticed the access virus & have heard of those, any other options? Any help is much appreciated. :)
You can use it with any kind of gears, actually it really depends on what you like. It can be plugged both via MIDI or CV so it's up to you ;)
Arturia i still havent used midi or cv for anything... i should already know how to use this stuff, i know, but I’m way behind the times.
Any action on the BeatStep Pro will be understood by your hardware instruments and it will create a sound :)

I don't if my BSP is broken but when I connect the midi out from her to my midi in from my sub phatty it doesn't work... I'm breaking my head to try to find a reason but nothing comes ahead, I'm almost giving up :( Is there any settings to nable note in/off ?
did you find out how to connect? Im having the same problem
Hi I tried using a 1/8 trs to midi din adapter from a Korg electribe 2 on the midi out of beatstep pro, I can't get any midi to my synth. What is wrong? Are the arturia and Korg adapters built differently? If so how?
Hi Carlos,
You should have received two cables with your Beatstep Pro.
One is grey and is made for Midi and the other one is black and is made for clock.
Korg uses the same system as our black cable, so it works only with the "clock" Out of your Beatstep Pro.
You should try with the grey cable we provide :)
I hope it helps!
Nice one, Glen!
Does the Beatstep Pro use a MINI or MICRO USB Cable?
How about connecting the BeatStep Pro with the Novation Circuit? Will there be an issue with both of them having a step sequencer? Thanks for any help
Can it work like a standalone sequencer without a computer connected? Thanks!
onnolab yes, I show that functionality in the video. Just use an external power supply and it never needs to see a computer.
+Glen Arturia hey Glen, I'm trying to set up my synth cave and am running into trouble. I'd like to use the BSP to sync up 2 Mother 32s and a TR8, what would be the best way to do this? Would the black cable midi connector be able to send start stop like the regular grey midi connector?
Do you know which settings to use for the Korg Odyssey? I bought the module just to sequence it with BSP via CV/Gate and I can't get it to work. It sequences just fine from my Keystep though 😕
Can I load on drum sounds from a DAW to the device?
Hi! Can the drum rack send polyphonic midi?
Hi!
That's a good question and I think you should ask our support team: www.arturia.com/support/askforhelp
Cheers!
im getting A LOT of cracking sounds when playing midi into my Virus!? anyway to fix this or any tips on maybe why this is happening? its really bothering me & restricting me recording. im playing the synth in multi mode, playing two sounds at once & getting tons of pops
i dont get any change in the sound when i alter the velocity with the knobs .....
Are you playing with a velocity sensitive synth? Many analogs don't have velocity sensitivity.
Yeah, that's it. Du'h :-)
hello all, can i sequence 2 synths thru CV outs and a Sampler with midi out? if I can, what am I waiting for? :) thanks for replies in advance
is it possible to adjust the cv output on the beatstep pro?
Hi, is it possible to sequence a third melodic line with the purple (drums) channel by midi din?
Yes. You need to program your "drums" to be notes or maybe even chords. Not the simplest way but can be done.
Excellent! Thanks for your reply.
Hey :) I love the BSP. Ideally it'd control my Moog Minitaur and my iPad. But I can't get it to work with the iPad. I used the Y-Cable like the Quick Start guide recommended, but no luck. Just a message saying "Not enough power." Any ideas?
More power
So I've got a problem
I got an Modular , Dark Energy and TR-8
so the both Sequencers are giving Cv/Gate to the Modular & Dark Energy.
The TR-8 is GETTING the BPM via Midi kable directly from the BSP.
So far so Good !
Now if I'm using the Drumgates (the lower ones) to Control with the gate-outputs the modular , the TR-8 is also played or getting Gate inputs:
For example i tippt in the TR-8 an 4/4 Kick and the drum sequenzer is playing 16 Steps the tr-8 plays 16 kicks per step....
For sure it got something to do with the Software somehow.
I just want that the TR-8 and other Midi devices are getting the BPM per midi nothing else.
what do i have to change in the settings ?
What about boutique machines or admit u don’t give them any vid time AT all
This looks pretty awesome, it's going on my Xmas list.
When you use the midi out i get it from sequencer 1 and 2 how can i change it to only get one wile using the cv out or will it automatically arrange itself
LOL! "So analog gear.. Everybody has it, or everybody wants it". This guy is hilarious!!
I want to use the BSP's drum sequencer to control/sequence two Volca Drums. Each volca Drum has six voices which can be assigned to a single MIDI channel or spread across six. So is there a way of assigning pads 1-6 to one Volca drum then pads 9-14 to the second Volca Drum? How would I go about doing that? Would I need to allocate separate MIDI channels to all twelve voices or could I, say, assign Volca Drum 1/BSP pads 1-6 to channel 10 and Volca 2/BSP pads 9-14 to channel 11? Please help!
