I cried through all of that. Especially when he said she torture herself with her own guilt that really set me off. As carrying guilt from life times is awful. Most people don't remember.

I used to love this movie but damn the message is cruel.
It's basically saying "if you broke under terrible hardships in life, you're screwed in the afterlife. There's still a sliver of hope, but not if you had no one who loved you".

"I hope this movie gets happier soon" I think we all hoped the movie would get happier soon...
I watched this movie years ago, when it had first come out, and it was beautifully sad. It starts at what most might consider to be the end, and continues that way for sometime. Still beautiful, still sad, and I think the movie still holds up. I can only think of a handful of other movies that explore this category and do it somewhat justice.
I also have to say that I love Robin Williams, I grew up with him and his 'family friendly' content, but I think the more serious roles he took seem to be overlooked and underrated. If you haven't seen this movie, or any of his other more serious roles, strongly recommend. This man knew how to pull on heart strings.

This story is actually based on Mahabharata story, describing how the Soul has to travel through physical, mental, emotional state to get freedom on souls plane. Not all souls makes it whole way up. Getting stuck in one of the lower planes and slowly pulled back to regular life. Only very advanced souls will stay in the heavens longer.

This movie is basically perfect, and while there's so many good lines and themes and scenes (literally EFAP) the one that I always forget and always takes me by surprise is when he says "Can I make elephants fly?"
My top 3 movies are The Time Machine, What Dreams May Come and The First Men In The Moon.
