Here I am, in South Australia, the driest state on the driest continent, learning about driving in conditions that I will never experience in my life. I do have to point out, the sand where I drive is also extremely variable in the same way that snow may be, depending on the conditions.
I can imagine loose dry sand like sugar snow. It's must be very challenging at times. I've not really ever driven on sand, but you never know. Thanks for watching
Really interesting, as usual. I don’t think I’ve seen another video as good as this with deals with driving off road in different snow conditions. Great stuff Mike. 👍
You and Nate from Dirt Lifestyle have an equal obsession with snow. You both talk similar concepts when it comes to technique. Would love to see a collab.
Nate certainly likes snow. He seems to get some very wet snow where he is, although I have no idea where he is. When it's up to three feet or 1 meter, my setup has reached its limitations. I expect it will get a bigger tire for local winter stuff. Thanks for watching 🙏
Burnout is a real thing. I took three weeks off at Christmas with the family. Me and my 5 year old Max got some RC crawlers for Christmas, and we've been out almost every day with them. I don't feel burned out as I tend to pace myself pretty well these days. But you never know! Anyway, I have lots of videos to do, some camps, the 4.0, my snowmobile, some diesel stuff, and selling my ass for things, so don't worry I shall see you next Sunday 😉
25 psi is street pressure on my cherrokee. The second I'm off road i drop to 6 psi. If i have to go lower i probably shouldn't be doing what im doing. I found that in sugar snow a tall skinny AT tire is best. I use to run 34 9.50 15s on a 70 wagoner and in sugar snow it cut through it like a hot knife in butter.
How deep is that sugar snow you're talking about? I'm dealing with it all winter, and when it's deep enough to hang up under the vehicle, it's over. AT tires will certainly work okay up to a point, but generally, they have stiff sidewalls and air down poorly, making them plough instead float. Thanks for watching
Hi Mike. Amazing video. Really enjoyed that. Mike I know you did not love bfg ko2 tires before. You had them in 33 x 12.5 I think. Or 32”. The new ko3 is slowly being released and has a better rubber compound. Stay softer at much colder temperatures. Higher silica content. If you swapped rim size to a 17”. I think you can get a 37” x 12.5. And the bfg ko2/3 will air down real nice and wide just like your km3 tires do. The bfg ko2 and the new 3 are never true to size. I bet 37” ko2/3 will be max 36” in actual size. And the 39” version will be barely a 38”. So I think that’s about as close as you are going to get to those artic trucks tires. They will deflate real nice. Bfg tires are lighter than virtually any other AT. So your front differential will stay happy so long you don’t give it tons of the skinny pedal. I think you would still need to stud them your self so they perform better on the compact road snow and ice. I bet a bfg 37” fits on your truck easy. And I think you can get them closer to 11.5” wide. Which I think would probably work better than a 12.5.
My next set of tires will be bfg ko3 33 x 10.5 x 15. (When they eventually get made available 🤞) As Im limited for choice on the 15” rim size. If I swap rims to a 17”. I would probably go with whatever metric size was close to 34 x 11.5”. My xj is on a 4.5” lift so I’m not going bigger than a 34” tire. I love them Artic trucks tires too. But I did check out the price$$$😮! Not attainable for me either.
Thanks for the information it's definitely food for thought. It's true my experiences with AT tires were 6 years ago on the older KO2, and tire technology is moving forward constantly. I will be getting a new set of tires specifically for winter, next winter. It will be a 37 or 38. A 17-inch rim is a tough thing to find for the XJ, though. A 16, no problem! I want the lightest but biggest tire possible, so I will take a look at some options. Thanks you for watching!
That sounds like a nice choice of tire. I loved my ko3 when they were not so worn. I must replace them soon. The AT38s are very expensive... it's a shame because they would be a good choice out here. Too much money though!
Another banger! Thanks! All the best in the new year to you and the family! Still looking forward to see the other XJ as well as a detailed breakdown of the gear you are using as mentioned in my previous comment in the previous upload. Again - thanks for the pleasure of the flick and stay safe.
Thank you, and happy new year. The 4.0 is patiently waiting for me to finish a few other vehicles for work and my snowmobile, but it's coming soon! I have a walk-around video coming up of the jeep and gear in it. Hopefully, that can cover everything to date. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

Super informative, Mike. Thanks for the explanation about the different snow conditions and their interactions with the vehicle variables. Very pretty country you were in as well. If you keep pushing the boundaries of snow wheeling, is a Unimog off-road build in your future?
Thank you! It's very pretty up here, although it's very cold at the moment. It's a bit too cold. I don't think that would work for me. I'm not too fond of them. They are very big so you need a big garage. It's winter for half the year here, so if your car doesn't fit in your garage, you're not working on it for half a year. Thanks for watching!
Makes sense to me. Having a vehicle inside during weather cold weather extremes is important. Do you use an engine heater in the winter while in the garage? These were a must when I lived in northern Michigan and North Dakota (U.S.) where it would get -20 to -30 degrees F.
It's sort of a must if you like working on them. I do have an engine heater, but it's a diy thing. It's basically a diesel heater with a heat exchanger bolted to the front of it that heats the coolant and blows hot air into the jeep. So far, it's made a huge difference to cold starts, but the garage is heated, so I only use it when I'm out in the woods camping.
In the small town I used to live in, the businesses downtown had electric receptacles for customers or employees to plug into during the day for the reason you mentioned--huge difference for cold starts. I am sure the heated garage makes all the difference. Back in the day, I didn't have that luxury, but do now--I can definitely relate! Take care on your solo trips this winter, but have fun! The upside is no bugs to contend with! Thanks Mike.
I'm lucky to get 2-3" where I live, and that just once a year. Wish we could get more, ours just turns into an annoying ice crust that causes accidents.
Great video and of course awesome XJ. I like my VM and 5 speed. It's not the most desirable version of the XJ, but I love it and I don't intend to sell it.

Ah, nice, I'm glad the video could provide something. I think the snow is just getting to the point where my setup struggles. It's plus degrees next week, though, so it will reduce down and become drivable again. Thanks for watching
I think it would make the vehicle impractical for what I do. It's a road vehicle as well as an offroad vehicle. If it lived on a trailer, I would just do whatever to it, but I think the portals would reduce gearing ⚙️ 🤔 Thanks for watching
@ they would but they also run backwards so you would have to do some transfer box work anyway to correct that so you could adjust the gearing in the reversing step.
Ah, okay, that's good to know. Here in Europe, people do portal swaps from the older unimog, but the price is astonishing. I would rather get some AT38s from Arctic Trucks for that money. Thanks for the info though, good to know
I’m uk based so it’s all hearsay but I believe it is now possible to get a set of humvee portals for about $1000 which is relatively pennies compared to MOG stuff. You should check out Nate from DirtLifestyle he’s just put a series two Landie on Toyota Landcruiser axles and 38” Artic Truck tyres. He also has a Suzuki SJ on portals
Have you considered using the Eaton Detroit Truetrac differentials front and back? I'm curious to know what you think about the truetracs. People seem to like it on snow.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness Thanks for making a video about driving on snow with a 4x4. I have been looking for ways to drive up an icy and snowy mountain dirt road. So far it looks like the truetrac could be a decent low maintenance and not too expensive option. But I don't have much experience with 4x4s. I think the following videos may be useful with info on truetracs. "Off-Road Eaton Truetrac vs Open Differential | Demonstration" on 4x2WagonFamily channel. "Detroit Eaton True Trac - How they work in real life" on Stark's Expeditions channel.
Another great informational video 🤘 Where did you get your snorkel, i know from the previous videos that its for Toyota Hilux but if you can spare anymore info i would be grateful. There is only 1 right side type snorkel on the net currently available and it looks like shit 😂 Thank you upfront mate your videos are amazing, cheers 🤘
@@V8AmericanMuscleCar yeah I'm using a drone. Dji mini 3 pro. You have to manually fly it while driving when you do shots like this. Obstacle avoidance must be off. I normally hold the remote against the steering wheel.
Would it be possible to fit those AT405 38’s on your jeep? Or would the suspension work etc be so significant that it either wouldn’t be worth it, or it would ruin the way the jeep drives when you put it back on 35’s for the summer. Just curious if would do it if money wasn’t a concern.
Yeah, absolutely. I have some 40s, and they clear the suspension, so 38s should work. I would just need to add bumostops. It's the price. They cost close to 4.5k. It's a lot of money at the moment. It will be a possibility in the future for sure. I would love to get a set of them specifically for deep snow. Thanks for watching
@@WorkshoptoWilderness thanks for the reply. I did see the price. Eye watering. Would be cool to see them on the jeep at some point in the future maybe.
I just saw that I wrote "bumostops." I just almost died of laughter. Jesus's that was funny. Sorry, I don't know why. Anyway, they are expensive, right? It's too much for toys right now when I could probably get a 37 for the price of one at38.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness wasn’t aware that was a typo. I just figured that with a full set of sexy 38” floaters on the rig you’d need some suitable protection for your prison wallet when Bigfoot next saw the XJ. Bumostops seems like a sensible precaution to me.

I think it would make the vehicle impractical for what I do. It's a road vehicle as well as an offroad vehicle. If it lived on a trailer, I would just do whatever to it, but I think the portals would reduce gearing ⚙️ 🤔
Thanks for watching
I've not considered them but I will certainly look into it! Thank you, and thanks for watching.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness
Thanks for making a video about driving on snow with a 4x4.
I will look those videos up. I'm all about low maintenance and reliable stuff. My E locker decided not to work sometimes, in reverse, so 🤷
Frozen shitsickle, thanks new fear unlocked.
It's real, I assure you.... thanks for watching
Another great informational video 🤘 Where did you get your snorkel, i know from the previous videos that its for Toyota Hilux but if you can spare anymore info i would be grateful. There is only 1 right side type snorkel on the net currently available and it looks like shit 😂
Thank you upfront mate your videos are amazing, cheers 🤘
Where is that - The Forest of Dean? 😆
Sadly not, although I do miss that place. Thanks for watching
Смешной чувак) Greetings from a Jeep driver from Russia!
By the way what's the brand of your bead locks?
They are Jack Wheeler Rocky Beadlocks. 15x8 with - 20 offset. I like them, but they are pretty heavy. Thanks for watching
Can you please tell me, at 8:01 you using a drone? And which drone please?
@@V8AmericanMuscleCar yeah I'm using a drone. Dji mini 3 pro. You have to manually fly it while driving when you do shots like this. Obstacle avoidance must be off. I normally hold the remote against the steering wheel.
@WorkshoptoWilderness ok, thank you very much.
Hahahaha 🤣
Hey amigo.! What can of diesel engine and transmission your XJ has? I have one here in Mexico and I want to do diesel on my.
It's the stock diesel engine and transmission. Although the engine is modified. 425ohv and Ax15. You're better off doing a Mercedes engine or m57 if you're starting from scratch.
Thanks for watching
How do you keep in touch with Meg?
I have my mobile phone. Most of the time, there is a signal. My vehicle is GPS tracked, and she can track me on the computer if she's worried about me. Normally, I give her coordinates.
Thanks for watching
I feel like I learned something about driving on forest snow. Just need to find a place to give it a try.
EDIT: I never get tired of the humor, either. 🤪
😎
Thanks for watching
That was fun. Sorry I have nothing to offer advice wise. For context, at 57, I have driven Zero times in snow. Florida Life FTW. I do have a new bucket list item now and that is to create a Shit Sickle. It is forecasted to be 27 Deg (Freedom Units) early Monday morning. I will stuff myself full of whole wheat bread, pasta, oatmeal, and brown rice Sunday and give a Shit Sickle a go. I'll report back. ❄💩
How many words for snow the swedes have?
hmm, i am watching this video, but I have BMW 730d, not sure this will come useful
Brother, i;ve been searching the god damn internet for a whole week, looking for the reason of why is my xj in "ECO" mode... any ideea why?
He's best video ever fuckin hilarious 😂
Haha thanks for watching
This is the last thing we heard from Mike, he died s*ddenly in that nasty fog...
I woke up in bigfoots cave..... I'm pretty sure I'm pregnant....
Thanks for watching
@@WorkshoptoWilderness Men can get pregnant these days, so yeah makes total sense...
Thanks for uploading. Been watching for a long ass time now, keep it up pls...!!!

"Where men get pregnant. " 😳 are you driving to San Francisco?
Hahaha, thanks for watching
😂😂😂😂😂 pissing, dogging, swingers, big balls, small balls, wet, moisture…. And lecture about driving on snow😂
All of the important stuff, mate 😄 thanks for watching
And you very well know that Big Foot is taking notes. 🤣🤣🤣
@@WorkshoptoWilderness I am not complaining I am enjoying the content - you increase my consciousness lol Thank you for making such entertaining videos they are not boring like other of same topic in UA-cam .
Can't you just put a blade on the front of the jeep...
I understand it will take away the challenge but it will take a lot of nonsense away.
Or is this comment just nonsense...? 😶
I'm sure you or someone mentioned this before. I wish there was a video of something like this so I could see if it worked.
Otherwise, it's a lot of fabrication for failure. It might work!
@@WorkshoptoWilderness There are some vids out there where people are plowing their driveway with it, not really the same as a bush road, but in that sugary snow I'm sure it will help, and with your excellent fabrication skills, should be a non painful project ;-)
Ha I was thinking this same exact thing watching the plowing through the drifts.
Workshop to wilderness snow plow blade with added Bigfoot overider bar 😂
I can try it if i find some old scrap blade. I want to make a plough for the driveway that can mount on the jeep. The BF override bar is a must 😆
@@WorkshoptoWilderness Was also wondering if a ''v'' shaped blade would be more useful on a bush-road...?
For the BF override bar, well, I'll leave that to you, can't wait to see the swearing and cursing while you make it...please do not get raped by him anymore.
Have you tried snow socks for the tires 🛞?
I've never tried them. I would like to because they are light. I will have to try and source some!
