The Power of Originality in Photography

I’ve just started watching Stranger Things series 3, and made me think about how nostalgia is often used to add emotive impact to contemporary art and media.
The trouble with nostalgia is that it’s selective in what it remembers and the response is subjective to the person experiencing it. In short, it’s not real. It’s merely a feeling - and one that will only resonate with the group of people for which those particular nostalgic triggers are relevant.
Stranger Things is good not because it relies on nostalgia, but because underneath, its narrative building blocks are solid. The characters have depth, the plot is engaging and the direction is captivating.
While it’s important to study the groundbreaking and iconic photographic work of the past, we won’t move forward by simply attempting to emulating a nostalgic aesthetic. We’ve already got Henri Cartier-Bresson , Vivian Maier, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams. We don’t need them again.
Groundbreaking work from the past was groundbreaking because it broke ground. Because it was doing something new.
Photography that excites me these days is when I see something new. When I see approaches that I haven’t seen before. And I think this resonates with me so much because firstly, it expands my understanding of what photography can be secondly, it feels authentic.
Nostalgic style can be used to great effect to communicate a message, but style without substance creates work that fades from memory pretty quickly.

It made me stop and think when you talk about Nostalgia being subjective, I haven't really thought about it, but when you are shooting a project for someone say family portraits you can't use what feels nostalgic to you are personal self need to figure out what triggers that feeling in your clients... Or at least I think that's what you're saying. Nostalgia becomes a blunt instrument If you don't understand how to use it effectively for your primary audience. Thank you for sharing such an interesting thought oh, it really got me thinking about my own photography thank you.

It takes time to collect thoughts and express them in a organized, concise manner. Most of the best youtube channels (that I follow at least) do not post weekly, or even longer, but when they do post, it's almost always gold. The way YT works is not conducive to quality unless you're part of a team and doing it as a full time job -- which kind of goes against what UA-cam started out as in the first place and made it so interesting.

I ALWAYS try to do something NEW, FRESH & UNIQUE when it comes to my photography. My main specialty is auto racing. Every time I see photos from track photographers, it's the SAME thing every year.
I even try to outdo myself each week & year to avoid being nostalgic with my previous work each week and year.

Finally someone saying how annoying it is to copy styles. Not just for nostalgia. But whenever I see someone copying another photographers style and trying to claim it as their own I’m like “we already have this dude with his voice telling his story. What are you adding to the conversation”. If you’re copying to challenge yourself and explore other styles that’s dope

I was thinking, the other day, about what it is that makes those filters aesthetically pleasing. Why do desaturated photos look good, yet less realistic? I came to the conclusion that it harmonizes the picture by bringing the colours closer together. That is a total shot in the dark as I don't know the first thing about photography. But that might be another reason, beside nostalgia, why those retro filters are so popular.

Or maybe the 80’s had genuinely better architecture, music, film, and design than most of the modern age. Maybe people like analog things like film or 80’s musical instruments because they were more real and tangible than virtual 1’s and 0’s.
Also, it seems like you’re assuming that moral and artistic regression can’t happen, in other words, “history is on a constant upward climb”.

I dunno. I can think of a few worse things. Getting glass shards in your eye. Needles under your fingernails. Boy Bands (unless, as this video points out, you grew up with boy bands). Wasps. And even if you're talking just photography: Corrupted memory cards/damaged film. Broken lenses. A camera that fails. A "sharp image with a fuzzy concept" is still worlds better than no image at all. 85% of art is the ability to B.S. You can spin any garbage concept into Pure Genius of Artistic Vision (caps because drama) if you say the right things to the right people.

I understand what you're trying to convey photographically, but I disagree on 2 general points:
    1) I've found pretty much every era's popular music since probably 1940 or so enjoyable in some way or form, except for current day pop. I doubt that this could be ascribed to feelings of nostalgia, the music is just shit.
    2) I don't agree that the 80's were as racist/sexist/phobic as you think it was. Victim mentality just weren't as popular back then.
"Sticks and stones" is what the kids were taught, not "look at me, I'm the biggest victim!"

I was Born in 2000 and I Love the 80s. I dont know what it is about the time but I just think everything was just better. I Love 80s music and cant hear modern rap or smth any minute without wanting to shut down the music instantly. And I think that especially modern communities are so desocialised. When I Listen to Stories from my parents who were born in East Germany, they say that everybody was much closer and deeper connected. I feel like thats why most people think everything in the past was better. Its about how relationships has changed in the last couple of years. Especially in a World were we are so digital and connected people seem to be more distant than any before. So thats why I think Nostalgia could be the solution for some of us who doesnt seem to fit in this time and It could Provide a completely new view on todays sociaties and ways of living.

Great video. I've been working on trying to duplicate "that film feel" in Lightroom myself; not because it fits with a particular style of work I do, but because it's a great way to learn what's really going on under the hood in a photo.
I love the choice of aspect ratio for this video as another nod to nostalgia. Well played.

Mate, without feelings(like nostalgia), people would just be organic robots. So... like british people, basically.
PS One exception with the british is the nostalgia for their former evil empire based on slavery, drug trade, world wide invasions and political conspiracies meant to spread starvation and general misery. Yeah, the british fondly remember that one.

Thanks Jamie, enjoying your channel. I have been using a Lumix G3 for years (old, I know....) but my love of mirrorless has to be realistic as my wallet cannot handle anything newer. :)
I have been using vintage lenses on it and it really opened up photography for me, and made it affordable. And the nostalgic (and sometimes awesome) pictures these older lenses provide are great, and what is better is having to manually focus and adjust aperture. Gives one pause before just snapping away. Not for everyone I know, but I dig it.

It is not Nostalgia, before the 80's trend the past 2 years, it was the 70's and now the 90's are coming back. It is just that the world we live in is way too fast and people feel like recycling instead of creating new content. Great vid

I agree. However the 90s era already made a comeback around 2015-ish. Then it was the 70s and now it’s 80s and y2k eras that’s making a comeback (The retro futuristic vibe with bright colors).

Throughout history, trends of previous decades still came back through art and fashion, so it’s not just people of today being lazy because we live in a “fast world” Especially since the Industrial Revolution and later the spread of mass communication, every period has felt “fast” to those living in it. True, we may feel nostalgic of a time pre-social media and even pre-internet, but if global warming doesn’t destroy our planet and there are future generations that look back on our time, there will be aspects they too will find inspiration or nostalgia in.

Great video. Not sure I agree with you on Stranger Things being any good however. Lot's of shout-acting and plot holes. I think by this point, its surviving on nostalgia only. There is almost no subtlety or dynamics to the series - every scene feels like the volume is turned up full. Which in turn results in an exhausting and one dimensional story, where the conversations and feelings are all just shouted over one another.
But your video was great as always mate :)

BBC costume dramas are the same. Impeccable historical clothing, sets and hair, but it always looks and sounds like modern women playing their grandmothers. The past never felt like the past when it was being lived through, it was unremarkable and creased round the edges unlike the reverential homages to it in retrospect.

Jamie hits out the park again with another brilliant video! Jamie’s editing is incredible (style), but his subject and knowledge is out of this world (substance). That’s why he has 200K subscribers. Looking forward to seeing him hit a million!

I sometimes find that the most educated creators tend to imitate, and the most ignorant tend to be bold in their artistic choices. They reinvent the wheel a lot, but sometimes they strike gold.

Loved thisss... especially cause I love nostalgia. I love this 80s revival although it’s before my time. I use it a lot in my work right now, especially UA-cam videos. I just think the 80-90 pre Y2K time period was such a special time in music and movies. But I’ve known some pretentious photographers that feel the past is the standard baseline for measuring skill, or knowledge of those artists and what they’ve don’t needs to be replicated but I agree with your take so much more... break ground in a new way. With photography, everything hasn’t been done already... you could shoot something no one has ever shot before every single day. Awesome video!

I think that nostalgia in photography should remind us of what's developed in the past, sometimes offering the opportunity for parody or to create new iterations from it. The fact that our tools have changed so much _should_ help prevent us from mere regurgitation, but that's not a guarantee. Film is rather like QWERTY. They establish a standard of quality because of the characteristics of the medium, not because they are inherently better. Something of the sort also runs parallel with digital recordings v. analog.
But there is this slow transition from one taste and technique to another. Like HDR (oversaturated with haloes). Will HDR have a resurgence in the near future as a retro-look? I know photographers who still shoot HDR and haven't noticed that it's no longer cutting edge. As Tower of Power sang, "What is hip today tomorrow will be passé."
