He sacrificed himself so Chopper wouldn't live with the guilt of the medicine killing him, but also to prevent Wapol from killing him so Chopper wouldn't sacrifice his life for revenge. All that, topped with the message "someone only truly dies when their forgotten" makes this hands down one of the most powerful moments in this show... And that's saying a lot given how many powerful moments it already has.
Chopper's "parents" represents the two traits that good doctors should have. One is the heart to care about other people. Two is the expertise to actually help and cure them.
Lets gooo, we love Chopper. Tony Tony Chopper, Tony because he's a Tonakai (reindeer) and Chopper because he can chop down trees with his powerful antlers. The best medical skills and a huge heart 🌸
He ate the mushroom because he is already dying on an incurable disease, he has only days left. He took his life early and appreciate chopper's effort at the same time.
I absolutely love how the story positions things like pessimism, apathy, cruelty, hopelessness in Drum Island as a disease of the heart, and that there's no disease that can't be cured. and by saving Chopper, and getting through to Dalton, Hiriluk DID eventually cure the disease plaguing Drum Island, even after his death.
These episodes are such a rollercoaster. There's so much to love and nothing to dislike. My favorite part is that Hiriluk makes sure to be blown up as his last decision in life so that Chopper won't have to carry the burden of knowing his medicine killed his first (and at the time only) friend. Combine that with the music and one of the most memorable speeches/quotes in early One Piece, and it is plain gold.

The first time I ever cried watching anime, baaaaaaack in the day, almost 20 years ago in high school. I was watching these episodes. When Hiluluk falls to his knees and says that he's glad that the doctors aren't sick and it was just a trick... I just whimpered and cried.
