- Will this "Today" segment go down as the worst makeover in TV history? Beauty expert Deepica Mutyala tried to show off her skills by giving a woman a quick updo for the summer. Model Malyia McNaughton, who has beautiful curls, was given a makeover that made her hair look as if she was caught in a wind tunnel. The stylist pulled the model's hair into an awkward ponytail -- and viewers weren't impressed. McNaughton managed to smile through it all. However, the stylist said she was devastated. #InsideEdition
The first error is thinking you can style black womans hair in one minute. That’s the FIRST mistake unless it’s a bun .. but even if it’s a bun you have make sure it looks neat
Two Bobby pins on the sides wouldve made an easy Mohawk style. The woman was not creative at all. She didn’t even try
She should have at least created a side part with a twist pinned to the side, that would have looked decent on the girls length.
Yeah, never go for that “stylist” for anything.
Model is gorgeous! I feel bad for them both though.
Not her fault. That hair looks like a mess
Wow
Lmfao
honestly she didn't even need a makeover her hair was already styled beautifully.
1:15 The beginning of the school year vs. when your 4 months into the school year and failing but you gotta stay positive
LMAO
That Guy haaaaaa you put a smile on my face.
That Guy 😂😂😂😭👊
Daaamn I can relate
😊
"I've seen the wind make a better style."
😂😂😂😂
same
Ok......I'm done here. You get the comment of the DAY!! Lol.
+lisalafayette lol
+lisalafayette That was literally taken from the video itself, hence the quotation marks
+Elisha James Ok....
"I have seen the wind create a better style"
Oh my lord!! lmfao!
SuperDuperSentinel I was crying
If you can't do ethnic hair, you're not a hair stylist. This was horrible
Lets be honest her hair was already messed up to begin with. Look at it at 0:18 The Left side had more Volume and larger then the right side and the left bang was shorter then the right bang. In the back the left hair by her neck was shorter then her right side of her neck. A total mess. It only went from bad to worse. Doing black women Hair in 1 minute is not possible but since now the TV stations want to include everyone we got this bad result.
thank you! too many people calling themselves "hairstylists" when there's an entire category of hair they have no clue how to manage.
only white people think the truth is racist...step into reality this weekend
right!! lol
Umm she didn't even know how to do the Asians hair either! she just sucks period! !! lol how did she get a cosmetology license?
Every Natural gurl and her momma know thats a perm rod set, not a "Naturally Curly Hairstyle"
Ari Thomas thank you! I thought I was the only one to notice that she already had her hair styled ."
I would have came there in a wash n go and told her to put my hair in a high puff lol
Lol they had to say that at the time in front of the cameras
@@shadybrooks8174what is a high puff?
Even the journalist white lady gave the model a tap on the shoulder while hushing the so called stylist away😂
What a mess
And she said something like "It's a good thing to be gorgeous" as a way of saying "I'm so sorry girl" 😅
A stylist that can't do hair. That's scary.
Unfortunately stylists don't need to be trained in all hair textures. A western one SHOULD be...but frankly if you know you're only going to work with a certain hair texture your skills don't need to be broad
@@espositolne I learned the hard way they don’t learn all textures. I had a stylist who did not know how to do black hair burns 70% of my hair out of my head. I have bald spot on my head and what grew back was thin. I already had fine hair to begin with.
The sad part is, I’m a stylist myself. I learned how to do all hair types because I wanted to know. But thanks to the guy that ruined my hair I have a hard time getting a job as a stylist now. I had to keep my head shaved because that’s the only way it looks decent.
@kikiwilliamson8332 yes but it's optional. It also depends on the school you go to.
And charging women $$$ for it.
I died "I've seen the wind make a better hair style "😂😂😂
I blame NBC producers for not seeing Deepica rehearse it first.
exactly - surely she had a PLAN for each of them? or did she just go out and wing it?!
yeah savanna guthrie is a menace
I don't know if any of you know this.... but that stylist has actually done a buzzfeed makeover before lmao. looked about as crappy as this does i'm not even kidding
LOL I know what video you're talking about xDDD
that's messed up! by the time Deepica got done with it her hair looked like chickens had been scratchin in it!
Lol
what the hell did she did to her hair
Natural hair is beautiful, but I asked myself, why black women with natural hair in the TV ads hair look untidy, I mean actually messy. The media is not displaying black women at our best attractive self, why.
EXACTLY. and people get mad at me for saying she wasn't properly styled to begin with!
I'm a model and I can tell you that most stylists have no clue what they're doing with me hair. They'll curl it (when they literally don't have to) and then they run their fingers through it causing a lot of frizz. The client usually says, "aw that's so cute. I love the wild look". Um it's not cute, I wouldn't be caught dead in my day to day with hair this frizzy.
Because they use stylists who don't know a thing about black hair.
That's because that's Just the style. My twists out usually go into a messy curly afro. That's how I like it
Unfortunately it seems to fit the "necessary" narrative. Imprison, kill and maim black men, degrade (usually in *subtle* ways like your example) and vilify black women. If you paint black women that way, its so much easier to justify the angry black woman narrative. Gross all around, but i think its the unfortunate truth.
That was not a makeover. That was an assault.
This showed up on my suggestions 7 years later. I hope Ms Deepica Mutyala has now learned to style Black hair.
The after was definitely a damn mess, she should've just left her hair alone.
All the had to do was give her a hair band and make it a pineapple up do… this was a violation for her hair.
When they try to include diversity but don’t know how to do the diverse hair
I wake up and I get a much better hair style
😂 lol
LOL. Her hair was so much better before!
I STRONGLY AGREE. DO NOT FIX WHAT IS NOT BROKEN. BE CONTENT.
I saw it live and I was horrified.
At least it's not as bad as some of the Buzzfeed makeovers.
funny enough, this stylist has done one or two buzzfeed makeover videos 😂
Can u send me a link pls?
so true
@@opal5151she has a youtube its Deepica Mutyala
Um she' was a beauty influencer at the time not a stylist at all and had NO business in this woman's hair lol
Her being a beauty influencer and turning a gorgeous woman into a homeless one on TV Makes it worse
I would've been mad.
I came straight to the comments 😂😂😂
I've seen beds perform better hairstyles. She really messed up trying to fix her original hairstyle.
😂😂😂 I laugh every time I see this that poor model didn’t know whether to smile or laugh at this foolishness… she kept it cute either way
She should’ve just said she’s not familiar with working with that hair type and called it a day.
It's even worse when a Black stylist won't do your hair. They're all over Instagram talking about how they REFUSE to touch us. Damn shame. Hurtful.
They should have had a stylist experienced in working with black hair. That poor model, having to smile through it all. This is why black actresses often have to do their own hair and makeup because of mistakes like this.
Well, I just don't think the stylist has had any experience working with hair from a black person. Unfortunately, I think this was a lose, lose situation for her.
If she would have said something to the effect of: I don't feel comfortable working on the her hair because I don't have experience. And that would have made it's way out to the public she would have been crucified.
But she tried on live television and screwed up and she was crucified.
I think that even if she would have practiced before the show went on and not been able to do anything with is and passed. But somehow that information got out. Yes, she would have been crucified.
Our hair requires previous experience to be successfully styled. Even for mixed women (I should know, I have a mixed 2 year old daughter).
I don't believe that she messed up her hair on purpose. I think she saw what looked like a thin texture from the excellent job that was done on the hair before and got in over her head. If she would have had more than a minute or two to work with the hair I think it would have come out looking a lot better, not that the original hairstyle needed to be changed to begin with. (In other words, the stylist should have walked up to the black woman and said: "tada!" No need to change this!)
This doesn't have much to do with black hair. That style was crazy to try to accomplish on her length of hair for one. Even if it was bone straight, there is no way a high side pony was going to look right.
+ocky88 - exactly what I thought
I DONT THINK SHE DID IT ON PURPOSE EITHER I THOUGHT SHE PROBABLY THOUGHT IT WOULD BE EASY PEASY 123, THEY JUST NEEDED ANOTHER STYLIST ON THE SET THAT ALL HELL THEY NEEDED A STRAIGHT OUT SISTA GURL POINT BLANK
You mean curly hair in general race as nothing to do with this matter
Bethany the girl in the video was black🗿
The model is still so beautiful and that smile throughout? Dazzling!
She should have gotten a curly cream and pulled her curls out one by one and finger curled them OR she just should have done a top knot with the curly cream and defined the curls on her hairline.
All she had to do was brush it into a ponytail or put a headband on it. She really messed her up
She looks better before 👸👈
India don't know about black people hair 👸👈 No Mississippi Masaala Boo😔
that natural hairstyle who was a summers style within itself already...... there was no need for that model to even be on stage....that was just a quick discrimination towards natural hair stylings
Even the host lady is confused with what she's doing
The hair stylist needs her license removed
THIS is not incompetence. THIS is passive aggressive. Even the way she approached her with the tap on her shoulders, screamed covert aggression. Some people/women really can NOT handle an attractive darker skin woman. I don’t know why, but I’ve witnessed this on more than one occasion. The last I can remember was the influencer ‘Mahogany Curls’ (or something like that) on a show similar to this years ago. They did her the same way. Smh.
How about doing an interview with the model to speak on how she felt!!! That fraudulent hairstylist is a 🫏hole playing in that lady hair like that. Adding all that unnecessary tension. That can cause breakage and knots. She lack education fr in being an hairstylist, very unprofessional.
No comb
No brush
Just fingers and gaslighting
At least she felt bad about it and apologized
Never thought my comment about the Wind would've been funny to anyone. 😅
I'm not sure but it looks like the stylist doesn't know about styling curly hair lol I've dealt with plenty of those.
IM CRYING
I'm not going to lie, I wouldn't even know what to do to her hair and I have natural black hair also. Her hair is already done and looks nice. The only way to improve it is to add a bow or something
Summer hairstyle..all she had to do was add a nice hair band or pin up the sides..not mess with the curls at all.
She has no talent nor skill 😂
She looks so much better before! Awful!!
That was a mess. It is a sad fact that a majority of white hair stylists don't know how to do and/or take care of natural hair. I think all stylists should know how to do all kinds of hair.
Umm the hairstyle is horrible my brothers hair is better and I’m sorry but who did that can’t make hairstyles- Ik sorry if I being rude but I’m just saying the truth
Not everyone knows how to do black hair...
Natalie M what is black hair ? Every black person doesn't have the same hair type
La morochaMica Black hair is coarse and thick. Black hair defies gravity. Let's not pretend that our hair is the same as everyone's because it's not.
Not every black girls hair defies gravity. I've seen black girls with 3b all the way down to 4c. LamorochaMica is right. Not every black person has the same hair type. Me, a Nigerian might have thicker hair than some African-Americans.
Why didnt she practice beforehand.. Hairstylists know hair textures and how they act 💀
ppl make mistakes... the hair stylist is a woman of color herself. it was funny but she shouldn't be feeling crappy over it.
Yes she should
A woman of colour, yes, but not the same race as the one she was styling.
Races have different hair and different hair requirements to look good, and being a good hair stylist is about being flexible enough manipulate a large variety of hair types into looking good.
Don't fix what isn't broken? How about hiring people who understand natural hair.
😂😂😂😂 well damn! Should've honest about the textures she can and can't work with ..
She would have gotten away with it if she had simply pulled the womans curls apart making a more thicker curly fro but enough to leave those defined curls in the front…
She could have pulled that hair up in a ponytail and made it look better then that. She just did not know what to do with her beautiful hair.
A lot of Hairdressers think they can work with curly hair and can't.
This is not the first they had a segment like that. There was a stylist they had on a few years back who thought it was cute to wrap string around a Black model’s head and then tried to convince the host it was the most beautiful thing
You should be sad and never touch anyones hair ever again. Then she pulling her hair thru an elastic band causing breakage..she need to take several seats
As someone with curly hair I cringed so hard when she started running her hair through her bangs 😫 I was like noooooooooo
Ive had better bed head. My head looks better after taking down my braids after a month.
I hope she’s laughing all the way to the bank because this was an injustice.
That really sucks that the model was put into that position to begin with
0:17 It's pronounced Meli-ah.
LMAOOO THEY JUST LEFT HER LOOKIN LIKE THAT I- 😭😭😭
And she handled her hair too rough🙄☹️🙁😟😖😳
She screwed Mallia so badly
To be honest she didn't create any "style" on any of the models🤦🏽♀️ it was all bad!!
Omg saw this stylist on the today show again doing makeup! The makeup was horrible. Just really shiny eyeshadow lol... they must pay her really cheap
Tore my good sis up smh
lmao. even the people behind this video sound like she is holding on to her laughter.
It looks like when you let a toddler play hairdresser in your hair
Yeap! 😆
That poor model 😂
She was so rough with her hair
you should now post deepica's follow up segment to amend the situation. shows grace and maturity
lol yes she needed to redeem herself
Omg 😂😂😂 do better!
I don’t think the stylist mean’t any harm. I think she was caught off guard by the texture of her and she lacked the experience to know how to handle it. Since they were on live TV, she tried to just go with the flow, but it would’ve been better if she would’ve acknowledged that though the hair is beautiful, it has to be handled differently, and since she isn’t train to do natural hair, she will leave it looking beautiful the way it is. The model handled it well.
Lmfaooo
LMAO
report real news plz
I just don't understand ..sooo no Black hairstylist was available ?? 🤷🏾♀️
I partly blame the producers on this. Did they really think any hairstylist could do a really put together and nice looking hair style in under a minute for three women???
Awkward ponytail 😂 gorgeous to ridiculous they goin in on her lol
The hairstylist ain't know nothing about black hair ....thats her problem
She just should have said that her hair was already fire and just went to the next model. Idk how she could have improved on that models hair. It was already perfect. But damn did she ruin it.
The woman was absolutely stunning in her before look, why would you volunteer, goofball
I'm not hating on it. Styling black hair is a skill, and she promised she would try better. I hope that she can one day look back and be able to laugh
If people on the Internet think that they can rip you just because you dont know something, please ask yourself first if you know everything about your job field before you go ripping someone!
She was deliberately VIOLENT on the models head!
Oh no no noooo!!! What did she do to that womans hair? I mean, she got eyes, dont she? Whatever product they were trying to sell...RIP.
Black hair isn't her hair & she should've never touched it.
I agree it' was a mess BUT what do you expect? you realize she was on a show? She couldnt just skip over that model.
