    It's still astounding to me how long the f-22 has already been in service, and its still the best fighter...by far. We talk about it like it's new. The latest and greatest....and it's 20 years old now...and still is the latest and greatest.

    Brainstorming session for the F-22: Let’s make a fighter with more dogfighting and raw power than an F-15, but it needs to have the radar cross section of a small insect. Oh, and it needs to break the sound barrier without inefficient afterburners. Yeah, that’s what it needs to be.

      what paint? :D

    • @dylman5744
      @dylman5744 10 місяців тому

      You mean how the paint is literally peeling off?

    • @CoffeeAndPaul
      @CoffeeAndPaul 9 місяців тому

      @@dylman5744, its "paint" is almost 100% pure radar absorbing material (RAM). The F-22's surface statement is not so much paint as it is a surface application.
      The older surface RAM we see on F-117A & B-2 bombers has a "depth" of more than ⅙th of an inch or 4.2 millimeters. The B-2 & F-117A flying surface RAM are artificially colored. We added an electromagnetically inert, black dye of a chemical solution I don't know for the last couple surface applications (all RAM that I know of is multilayer so its application happens in individual steps over 1 surface area).
      For the F-22 the designers didn't want to do that. They wanted maximum stealth capabilities from the surface application's chemical formula & layer sandwiches.
      Any F-22's original RAM surface application from 20 Years ago are grey or Earth tone because the physical elements that compose the radar-effective majority of the RAM's chemical compounds, solutions, &/or mixtures are silicates & rare earth minerals which tend toward tan, brown & charcoal when they're viewed as individual material elements.
      The upgraded F-22's seem to have a silverish, partially reflective skin treatment. I have no idea what its composition is & any guesses guesses I have will probably be wrong, but I am thinking the top surface application is some sort of an oxide or a salt (ionic compound). There's bound to be silicate-based compounds in that RAM, though, possibly in a unidirectional crystalline arrangement. The US has been making unidirectional crystalline structures for Decades & we've become quite proficient at production technique & quality control.
      Materials sciences are a large, dynamic scientific field of research that the investments in which are high priorities for the Armed Services of the United States.
      TRIVIA MINUTE: Have you ever noticed that every F-22's "painted" surfaces look different from every other plane? No 2 planes have the same discoloration that you see, most noticeably on the ruddervators. These discolorations are a result of their surface treatments reacting to airflow velocity, temperature & air pressue, light exposure, & other mechanical factors. Since no two F-22's have ever flown the exact same flight in the exact same flight conditions, the skin treatments of each different F-22 will develop different "scarring". Those discolorations are like thumbprints; you can ID individual planes without looking at their tail number.

    The upgrade includes much of the communications/ datalink package carried by the F-35 fighter. I bet one of the functions for the F-22 and F-35 is going to be as sensor nodes in the NGAD network. Both fighters will be able to self protect while sending targeting data to F-15 and F-16 fighters that will be bomb trucks and attackers. F-16's have been tested with dog fighting AI/expert software with success, similar software could go on new build f-15's. Now the NGAD fighter/ plane starts looking more like a stealth AWACS...

    1) Why won't the USAF upgrade its 35 block 20 Raptors to the block 30-35 standard?
    2) Why is there so much talk of retiring the Raptor in the early 2030s when the USAF operates 200 obsolete and decrepit F-15Cs and >800 obsolete F-16s with mechanically steered radars?
    3) In a war with China, Russia or, God forbid, both; won't a full fleet of fully upgraded Raptors be synergistic with NGAD?
    4) F-35 block 4 should replace F-15E in the deep interdiction role by 2030 when only F-15EX will be survivable.

      @metallicaislife1603 so I did a bit of research on how pilots get paired with aircraft. Apparently people that go through AF pilot training get their choice of aircraft, but it's merit based, so only about the top 1/3 of the graduating class gets their first choice of aircraft, and even then it's based on what aircraft are available at the base you're stationed at. So, if you want to fly an F-22, you need to be at the top of your graduating class and be sent to a base that has one available. So yes, it's very hard to get an F-22

      @@SuperBossGiovanni yeah thats definitely a tough journey, but if you can actually do it that’s incredible. Just wish I could go for a ride in one of the f18 super hornet’s. Even though I’d be passed out for most of it probably lol.

      100x better stealth on the F22. No joke.
      The SU-57 otoh, probably has better avionics and weapons and a bit superior flight characteristics.

    I think the f22 is still the best in the sky the f35 is a good navy plane for sure but the f22 can do all the stealth missions and get out if needed or dog fight the f35 gets caught sneakin around and it’s probably toast
