@@dylman5744, its "paint" is almost 100% pure radar absorbing material (RAM). The F-22's surface statement is not so much paint as it is a surface application. The older surface RAM we see on F-117A & B-2 bombers has a "depth" of more than ⅙th of an inch or 4.2 millimeters. The B-2 & F-117A flying surface RAM are artificially colored. We added an electromagnetically inert, black dye of a chemical solution I don't know for the last couple surface applications (all RAM that I know of is multilayer so its application happens in individual steps over 1 surface area). For the F-22 the designers didn't want to do that. They wanted maximum stealth capabilities from the surface application's chemical formula & layer sandwiches. Any F-22's original RAM surface application from 20 Years ago are grey or Earth tone because the physical elements that compose the radar-effective majority of the RAM's chemical compounds, solutions, &/or mixtures are silicates & rare earth minerals which tend toward tan, brown & charcoal when they're viewed as individual material elements. The upgraded F-22's seem to have a silverish, partially reflective skin treatment. I have no idea what its composition is & any guesses guesses I have will probably be wrong, but I am thinking the top surface application is some sort of an oxide or a salt (ionic compound). The US has been making unidirectional crystalline structures for Decades & we've become quite proficient at production technique & quality control. Materials sciences are a large, dynamic scientific field of research that the investments in which are high priorities for the Armed Services of the United States. TRIVIA MINUTE: Have you ever noticed that every F-22's "painted" surfaces look different from every other plane? No 2 planes have the same discoloration that you see, most noticeably on the ruddervators. These discolorations are a result of their surface treatments reacting to airflow velocity, temperature & air pressue, light exposure, & other mechanical factors. Since no two F-22's have ever flown the exact same flight in the exact same flight conditions, the skin treatments of each different F-22 will develop different "scarring". Those discolorations are like thumbprints; you can ID individual planes without looking at their tail number.
The upgrade includes much of the communications/ datalink package carried by the F-35 fighter. I bet one of the functions for the F-22 and F-35 is going to be as sensor nodes in the NGAD network. Both fighters will be able to self protect while sending targeting data to F-15 and F-16 fighters that will be bomb trucks and attackers. F-16's have been tested with dog fighting AI/expert software with success, similar software could go on new build f-15's. Now the NGAD fighter/ plane starts looking more like a stealth AWACS...
With underwing armaments and/or sensors -- even at a considerable reduction in stealth, its advanced avionics, maneuverability, and speed characteristics make it ideal for replacing EVEN OLDER AIRCRAFT.
This is among the best aircraft that will be used forever including when we reach fusion reaction engines they will be implemented into the aircraft making this fly at double it's current speed and double the max altitude.
It can fly Mach 2 with after burner so doubling that would be Mach 4 the friction generated would melt it down at that speed. Even Mach 3 would be too hot for the composition and stealth coatings
@jamesholden5664 you are correct it would melt at max cervice feet of 65,000 but using future tech engines at more than double this altitude and even higher than the SR-71 the friction wouldn't be as much of a problem due to the lack of an atmosphere

They both frequency hop. The F 35 radar has more battlefield management options, but its like comparing a Firebird to a Camaro
F23 had a lot more combat range and better stealth technology. Plus the F23s avionics were transferred to the F22. Also isnt it amazing how our NGAD and Japan's and Korea's next gen stealth fighters all seem to emulate the F23

I'm not competent to recommend future strategies for the Air Force, but I have major worries: 1) Why won't the USAF upgrade its 35 block 20 Raptors to the block 30-35 standard? 2) Why is there so much talk of retiring the Raptor in the early 2030s when the USAF operates 200 obsolete and decrepit F-15Cs and >800 obsolete F-16s with mechanically steered radars? 3) In a war with China, Russia or, God forbid, both; won't a full fleet of fully upgraded Raptors be synergistic with NGAD? 4) F-35 block 4 should replace F-15E in the deep interdiction role by 2030 when only F-15EX will be survivable.
Did you not hear or understand your guy telling you that this fighter didn't even have IRST? Something that even 4-gen fighters have let alone other 5-gen fighters.

Balloon was not alone. Without fireing a single shot (soo many times), is invaluable. Instilling fear is often your best Offense/Defense, the "known....Unknown". Most don't like the new "Shabah!!!". It's the ICBM of aicraft, you don't want it to be used! :)

It does have a magnificent research and development capabilities but other countries has begun to outperform them in certain areas. (Not that it's bad yeah?) However my main point of this statement is - Healthcare and Space exploration does not get so much funding as birds with missiles attached to it.

@metallicaislife1603 so I did a bit of research on how pilots get paired with aircraft. Apparently people that go through AF pilot training get their choice of aircraft, but it's merit based, so only about the top 1/3 of the graduating class gets their first choice of aircraft, and even then it's based on what aircraft are available at the base you're stationed at. So, if you want to fly an F-22, you need to be at the top of your graduating class and be sent to a base that has one available. So yes, it's very hard to get an F-22

Yes, F-22 is the testbed for the NGAD, so it will complement the NGAD in areas where the NGAD is weak at.

Typhoon IRST is superb. Raptor should have had this when built. I’m looking forward to the F22 replacement in a decade or so. Should be incredible.

Seeing as how the US has just under 200 F-22 Raptors, and over 19,000 pilots, I'd imagine that the selection process isn't easy.
