City of Joburg to outline recovery plans following Pikitup strike

The City of Johannesburg will today outline recovery plans following disruptions by casual workers’ strike at Pikitup. Yesterday, the utility obtained a court interdict against the striking employees. The workers, contracted by Pikitup, downed tools last week, demanding permanent employment. This, after the waste management company announced that their contracts would not be renewed. The protest resulted in Pikitup trucks not being able to leave the depots, leading to tons of rubbish piling up across the city. Pikitup says it remains committed to engaging with the workers to find an amicable solution. Karinda Jagmohan has more.
