I can't believe that Michael complained about the music in the early 2000s lol, it was way better than the current music! And if there's 1 thing Smallville never missed it was the music featured on the show! The songs were always perfect for the scenes it always fit the vibes of the scenes and elevated your performances. It also give a feel of nostalgia whenever we rewatch the series today.

That’s nostalgia. People say that “old music is better than today’s music” all the time, and the goalpost always shifts. The current era is always the worst.
But truth be told, 2000s has some atrocious trends when it comes to incorporating pop music into the shows and movies.

the scene music was great but at this point i can't stand the theme song. ive been watching again lately and i was a bit shocked at some of the background music that i've heard like the flaming lips. they definitely had some great music on the show. todays music is soulless and awful. you can still find good music from pandora or youtube.

Oh they did Eric dirty not giving him a proper send off. I think, rather than bringing him back to play an evil version, it would have been better if some being was present in the jungle, then we see Whitney returned to Smallville and it's actually him but more like an avatar while his real body is dying in an army hospital. In the end it's actually him, or his avatar, that saves the day. Then the knock on the door to tell Lana that he was never there at all.

I hated his character, so much it made me annoyed with Lana.
I mean right from the start, he’s the worst. Then, they try to make the audience feel guilty for hating him, by having him join the military.
I’m not even guilty that I hoped he’d never return, because he obviously was gonna return.
The actor was perfect for the douchey boyfriend, who the lead love interest, just can’t break up with. High School is serious, and he’ll never get over her. 😆

It is sweet. But also I appreciate how Michael can be very matter of fact about it which I'd think would make it less embarrassing haha. It's not that Tom needs to be thought of as an Adonis for the ages or is somehow morally deserving of admiration more than anyone else. He just had a job to do, to work hard to maintain his physique, so he could create the right effect on the show. Look at it more functionally and maybe he'll feel less self conscious about it :)

The final scene of the episode between Clark and Lana in the cave remains one the best scenes from this whole season (and in my opinion one of the most memorable from the entire series with the combination of the great acting and music). Kristin was incredible at portraying Lana's emotions and there was always such a vulnerability conveyed by Tom and Kristin in these kinds of scenes that added so much to Smallville. I think that sense of tenderness and heart onscreen makes the Clana relationship so compelling throughout.

There was a lot of great acting in this episode, even the range of facial expressions. I thought the war scene was well done and the last explosion going off blocking Whitney and his friend so we didn’t know if they survived. In my opinion, Helen was not being aggressive when she found out Lex investigated her. She had a right to be ticked and I would have been too. The reveal of Tina as Whitney was a great twist. Also the spaceship saving Clark was pretty cool. The end with Clark and Lana was very powerful and I agree it was the best scene from the episode; great performances by Kristen and Tom there.

    1. Michael has 3 signs of "relax" in his room.
    2. First proposal on Smallville? maybe because in the episode where Lex is marrying the teacher, it was off-screen.
    3. Of course Lana knows about the caves, she even asked her dad to help protect it.
    4. So great to see Eric. I'm sure for him it's very not a big deal to play 1 season 20 years ago, but I think he's always part of Smallville, the show and even more, Smallville the town.
    5. I think Clark's words about Whitney not being with superpowers and still putting himself in danger to make the world a safer place was a strong scene. even just watching it right now without a prior thinking, I got very emotional.
    6. I like that at the end Clark goes to the cave with Lana's necklace. I mean, it almost like he was saved by the ship and no one mentioned it and the episode could be over, but no, we see that his mind still thinking about his origin and seeking answers, and he has no one to answer them.
    7. Ryan is very unpredictable with his favourites scenes.

    SMALLVILLE WRITERS’ APPRECIATION POST
Just wanted to spread some love and give thanks to all the writers’ that contributed to making Smallville great. With ten seasons of content, it’s expected that some episodes weren’t as strong as others, but even the weakest ones always had great scenes/storylines worth watching. Smallville could get corny at times, but that was the 00’s for you, and it added to the charm.
Also, it’s sad to find out how little many of the writers were paid and were struggling to make ends meet. Al and Miles have even stated that they had to ‘sneak’ in the superhero elements as the network’s main agenda was the teenage drama aspect and finding ways to get Clark shirtless (not that I’m complaining).
It also has to be taken into account the numerous external factors that affected storylines, which the writers had no control over. Also, how much the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike impacted the industry, causing the cancellation of many shows and the downfall of others (e.g. the 11 episode season 2 of “Heroes” was the beginning of the end for that show), with the Smallville writers working right through until the strike to get 20 episodes out in season 7, of which Smallville was only one of a handful of tv shows that produced 20 or more episodes that season (unfortunately that prevented satisfying ends to Lex and Lana's storylines, due to Michael and Kristin leaving the show).
It’s great to see so many of Smallville’s writers’ have had stellar careers and moved on to writing/creating and becoming showrunners of success television shows in their own rights.

To me the end of this episode has always been one of my favorites of the whole show where Clark asks Johnathan if he thinks he would be brave enough to do what Whitney did if he didn’t have his powers. To me it really shows Clark’s upbringing and his respect for the men and women in uniform. It seriously just seems like it really hits at a fundamental of Superman as an American hero

Tom did a great job on the Clark versus Clark fight. Lex definitely has reasons to be paranoid considering that is how he was raised. Nature vs. Nurture. The pool scene was fun to watch. I thought that the ship saving Clark was a great scene. The only one that Tina did not affect was Lex. Lex saying that he doesn’t want to become like his dad was powerful. Love this podcast. It was nice to see Eric Johnson. I saw him show up on Criminal Minds as Aaron Hotchner's brother Sean. Eric seems like a very nice and sincere guy who is grateful for where he is at, not that Tom and Michael aren't. I think Kristin could probably cry on queue, by the way. I actually didn't remember the second scene when we see Whitney with his unit.
I think this episode could easily be a freak of the week style but the story that Tina wanted to impersonate Whitney to be with Lana was interesting and twisted. Both Eric and Lizzy played the characters very well and it really elevated the episode.
The ending scene was so beautiful and heartbreaking, Lana lets herself be vulnerable and let herself cry on Clark's shoulder. She had so many traumas and loses in her life and Clark was always there for her no matter how she treated him.
I will give this episode: 🌹🌹

  • @Ashley-zq5ch
    @Ashley-zq5ch Рік тому +9

I think maybe the writers were more concerned with the character development of Lex than the actual relationship. It shows a different side of him, capable of love and growth and that he wants to be loved and that he’s not all bad (yet) even though his father is actively working against him and sort of instigating his darker side at every turn. I liked that new lens on Lex.

Yes! That's what I was going to say to the question about whether Clark intentionally added some camp to the "why won't you die!" line - he did it just like Tina would've said it! Oh it was great to see that lovely Golden Retriever Eric Johnson😄, it was interesting to hear him talk about how much he enjoyed filming the war scene, and I can't wait to see him on the Inside Of You Pod too. It does seem like such a shame that they didn't make more of an effort when writing the character of Whitney because Eric was great, and I really enjoyed "Visage" because it gave Eric the opportunity to play around a bit more, as he was playing Tina, playing Whitney. I also called it with Ryan's favourite scene, it is always interesting seeing the actors play characters based on other characters in the show, seeing their interpretation of them.
Other notes on this Talk Ville episode, love Ryan's attention to detail talking about the war scene, Didn't notice any tech snafus, so thank you Jason👏, Michael's "fart out invisible fart bubbles..." made me laugh, and "It doesn't mean you are a bad writer, but sometimes you write s**t" - this is so true, like with drawing, they say it takes 1000/10000 (depending on what site you look on😆)bad drawings before you get a good one, you just have to keep pushing that creativity out , it is just unfortunate that sometimes some of that creativity might get picked up years later and critiqued on a podcast 😄. A great Talk Ville episode, thank you Eric, Michael, Tom, Ryan and Jason!❤

How delightful it was to witness Eric Johnson's presence, brimming with joy and a contagious ebullience that uplifted all in attendance. Listening to him speak was a revelatory experience, as his passion for his craft was palpable, and his affectionate recollections of his time on Smallville were truly inspiring. Indeed, the cast of Smallville was a thing of beauty, and it was evident that Johnson held a deep admiration for his former colleagues.
Although fate had other plans for him, and he was written out of the show, it was great to see that the creators of Smallville had dedicated an entire episode to him. Johnson's talent shone through as he adeptly played two disparate characters - the reformed bully, Whitney, and the emotionally unstable Tina Geer. His portrayal of both characters was equally impressive, and even when he was in the throes of instability, one could not help but be captivated by his performance.
I must confess that when he pushed Clark several feet with a single shove, I was taken aback, and it was only when Clark X-rayed him that I realized that he was indeed portraying the character of Tina.
Nevertheless, Johnson's remarkable talent was on full display, and maybe he could revisit your show during the flashback in season 4; It also be great to see him on your other show.
