      In this particular instance they’re asking yes or no questions and giving him direct rhetorical statements. Because of the time limits, representatives like the TikTok CEO and anyone else that rolls through usually want to answer a yes or no question with a long winded statement. “Filibusting” if you will. If they eat away at the Congress peoples time, they can avoid a significant amount scrutiny. Sometimes the answers require more nuance than yes or no, but it’s easier to tell when someone is being nuanced or simply being evasive.

    as a Computer Science Major, working in the software field... everything this "information technologist" says make me cringe. if any one refers to code as "ones and zeros" the last thing they've seen must have been assembly language.
    We need a age cap for Congress, the House, and especially the WH.

This is why not only he was rude and hostile the entire time , but also did not allowed him to answer any of the questions at all or explain anything. He clearly told him the code of tictoc is a global project and only part of the code is done in china. But he still insisted in forcing him to say that china did it all and that they are guilty without any proof that they are doing what they claim they do.

      Hey, Computer Science Major. I've been programming for 30 years and have programmed in a half a dozen languages. Tell me what do all computer languages boil down to.. "ones and zeros". That's what the CPU expects. Just because he "ones and zeros" that doesn't mean he only programmed in Assembly language.

Last time i knew about programmers doing that was in monochrom calculators writting tetris based and hess games. Good luck trying to maintain a program of many millions lines of code ,among dozens of programmers groups world wide using just zero's and one's. TIC TOC was written in JAVA language for Android platform and other languages for the IOS version.

      the IT guy mentions “classes and functions” being re-used between each software and he mentions there are MANY classes and functions re-used. i’ve written a ton of code for the business i work for and there are many classes and functions i re-use across my programs. sometimes they require zero changes and sometimes tiny ones. however, some classes are very general purpose and can apply to countless types of software. i have a class for FedEx and a class for UPS. to clarify i’m very simple terms, a class holds functions inside it and they perform tasks. i have a class that connects to the FedEx API and also one for UPS whose main purpose is retrieving tracking data. this is quite simple code but very useful and if i worked somewhere else, i would just re-use this code unchanged. there would be no issue legally because there is nothing particularly unique about such as some proprietary algorithm or other design that is unique to the business i made it at.
      there would be no reason for me to re-write this class just to use it elsewhere. this is just how things work in programming

    Look, I am all for rigorous review, but this guy is talking about reused "functions and classes" between two apps with very similar functionality, which literally a 1st year CS student would know immediately is not only extremely common practice, it's essentially meaningless as for whether there's any culpability. Of COURSE you reuse code between two very similar apps. That's 100% normal, and it would be idiotic to expect anything else. Next, he presents a bunch of open ended questions, then when Chew tries to answer, he cuts him off and demands a yes/no answer to a new question. Then when Chew tries to answer that, he switches back to open ended questions and threats (do you know lying is a crime?!?!). If this is what all of the hearing is like, it's a complete dog and pony act. And that's not even getting into the premise of the hearing, which is that tiktok collects user data (like no s!!t man, literally ever internet app on the planet does that). I have never used tiktok and I find it kind of annoying, but this is honestly embarassing.

    The congressman from Ohio is grilling himself. This hearing is nothing less than an indictment of American politicians. I don't find myself feeling sorry for tech millionaires very often, but putting them in front of congress does it. Nobody deserves to be surrounded by this degree of unintelligence.

    What was the point of getting him there if they were just going to talk to themselves the whole time and not listening to his answers?? Nothing substantial came out of this one sided conversation they just look like they are bullying the guy into saying yes to everything.
